First, an experience (concerning a communication from the dead) that my mother had. She once told me that she often used to wake up in the middle of the night to see her late father standing by the bed, not as a vague shape, but as real-looking as if he were still alive. I asked her if she was frightened by the apparition and she replied, “Well, I didn't like it but I knew he wasn't real, so I pulled the clothes over my head and went back to sleep.” So, did she really see her dead father standing by the bed or...? Obviously, she could never “prove” that it happened as she described and no one else could prove that it didn't. However, there is a way around this logical impasse.

    MEDIA RELEASE Monday 9th March 2015 Swing The Beatles It is difficult to imagine the music of The Beatles without a guitar. Yet that is what Liverpool born singer and Brisbane resident Craig Martin has done. In a stroke of initiative Craig contacted Sony/ATV who now own 99% of the copyright to The Beatles songs and sought permission to have the Fab Four’s songs arranged swing style - but without a guitar in sight! The concept of no guitar in the swing arrangement really impressed the management of Sony/ATV as very few artists, if any, have ever covered Beatles songs without a guitar. It helped, also, that Craig Martin had grown up in Liverpool and as a teenager had played lots of venues where The Beatles had performed - The Cavern, The Jacaranda and had performed with other Merseyside greats over the years - Gerry Marsden, The Searchers and Billy Kinsley from The Merseybeats. Having been given permission from Sony/ATV to arrange 25 of The Beatles songs Craig used several talented arrangers around Brisbane and even legendary Aussie arranger Ed Wilson of Daly -Wilson Big Band fame to put their individual stamp on songs like Can’t Buy Me Love, Hey Jude, In My Life, Get Back, Yesterday. Sony/ATV told Craig that he is the only artiste in the world with permission to perform this many ‘swing’ Beatles songs in a show. In a World Premiere Craig Martin and his Swing Band perform ‘The Beatles Swing’ for the Gold Coast Jazz & Blues Club at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Friday 13th March.

When he was 8 years old, he heard Love Me Do at a party and his life changed forever! He fell in love with The Beatles and knew that music would be his life. For years, he bought and assembled a collection of Beatles instruments with the idea of one day forming a tribute band. In 2016 he met Bruno (drummer) through a friend and invited him to join the band. Then Bruno invited three other friends who played with him in another band (Martin, Bruno and Agustin). When the band finally formed in 2016, they began to perform in different stages and bars in Montevideo. At the end of 2016 they competed in the Beatle Week battle of the bands at The Cavern in Buenos Aires, reaching the final, and in 2017 they decided to take the leap and present a show in one of the great theaters of Montevideo in which they recreated chronologically the music of The Beatles. In 2016 he met Bruno (drummer) through a friend and invited him to join the band. Then Bruno invited three other friends who played with him in another band (Martin, Bruno and Agustin). When the band finally formed in 2016, they began to perform in different stages and bars in Montevideo. At the end of 2016 they competed in the Beatle Week battle of the bands at The Cavern in Buenos Aires, reaching the final, and in 2017 they decided to take the leap and present a show in one of the great theaters of Montevideo in which they recreated chronologically the music of The Beatles. Using two contrasting models of unauthorized broadcasting, Radios Caroline and London, Robert Chapman situates offshore radio in its social and political context. In doing so, he challenges many of the myths which have grown up around the phenomenon. The pirates’ own story is framed within an examination of commercial precedents in Europe and America, the BBC’s initial reluctance to embrace pop culture, and the Corporation’s eventual assimilation of pirate programming into its own pop service, Radio One.     BEATLES HISTORY – PART ONE: 1956–1964 January 1956–June 1957: The ‘Skiffle Craze’ In January 1956, Lonnie Donegan’s recording of “Rock Island Line” stormed into the British hit parade and started what would become known as the ‘skiffle craze’ in Great Britain (vgl. McDevitt 1997: 3). Skiffle was originally an amateur jazz style comprising elements of blues, gospel, and work songs. The instrumentation resembled New Or- leans street bands called ‘spasms,’ which relied on home-made instru- ments. Before skiffle was first professionally recorded by American jazz musicians in the 1920s and 1930s, it had been performed at ‘rent parties’ in North American cities like Chicago and Kansas City. Many African- American migrant workers organized rent parties in order to raise money for their monthly payments (vgl. Garry 1997: 87). Skiffle provided the musical entertainment at these parties, as everybody was able to partici- pate in the band, which usually consisted of home-made acoustic guitars or a piano backed by a rhythm section of household instruments, such as a washboard, a washtub bass, and a jug (vgl. McDevitt 1997:16). Jazz trumpeter and guitarist Ken Colyer pioneered the skiffle scene in Great Britain. In 1949, he formed the Crane River Jazz Band in Cran- ford, Middlesex, together with Ben Marshall (guitar), Pat Hawes (wash- board), and Julian Davies (bass). Their repertoire included skiffle songs “to illustrate aspects of the roots of jazz and to add variety to a pro- gramme” (Dewe 1998: 4). After leaving the group in 1951, Colyer mi- grated to the United States to work with jazz musicians in New Orleans.
