The Jan. 3 killing led Iraq’s parliament to call for the ouster of U.S. troops, but there are lin- gering questions over whether Iran will be able to capitalize on the sentiment. The Ledger DANCE PHILLY’S GOT TALENT On Oct. 6, the Westphal College of Media Arts & Design brought Philadelphians to their feet for an immersive public dance per- formance inside the Barnes Foundation. The all-day spectacle explored the tension between public and private experiences by uniting professional and amateur dancers to perform work by re- nowned modern dance choreographer Boris Charmatz (pictured here leading a warm up). Charmatz is one of the most important figures in modern dance working today and his company has presented major performances at the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern in London, among others. This second annual Philadelphia Museum of Dance project was organized at the Barnes in partnership with Drexel’s dance program. Number of dancers who participated, including 200+more than 60 Drexel students. 2,000 Number of people who came to watch the performances. $300, Duration in hours of the public 000 Grant from the Pew Center of Arts & performances inside the Barnes. 6 Heritage in support of the event. 2 Drexel Magazine JACQUES-JEAN TIZIOU WINTER/SPRING 2019 1 TABLE OF CONTENTS UP FRONT FEATURE STORY THE VIEW FROM MAIN I am so impressed when young Drexel graduates hit the ground running, and each year’s “40 under 40” list provides new and inspiring examples — as you will discover in this issue of Drexel Magazine. From my perspective, learning about the many paths taken by our alumni also reaffirms the steps your alma mater is taking to better prepare tomorrow’s graduates. Our approach is rooted in the classroom and lab, as well as the workplace and in our neighborhoods — as you might expect from a university that excels in ex- periential learning.

  • Ruby Amanfu Soulful Superstar in the Making
For Immediate Release 3 March 2016 Contact: Jodi Joseph Director of Communications 413.664.4481 x8113 [email protected] Ruby Amanfu Soulful superstar in the making NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS — Dubbed “Nashville’s Next Indie Star” by Billboard, astonishing soul-rock singer Ruby Amanfu is a force. Since her star turn on Jack White’s Love Interruption in 2012, she was nominated for a Grammy, toured with Norah Jones, and released her transcendent 2015 debut, Standing Still. Ruby Amanfu and her band get your heart beating a little faster up in the club on Saturday, April 2, at 8pm. Amanfu is no stranger to standing ovations. With a soulful voice that in turn harnesses the soaring power of gospel’s greats and crackles with hushed intimacy, she is well on her way to becoming one of the greats. A voice like hers makes an impression on its own, but a magnetic stage presence and a tremendous capacity to fill songs with emotion leave concert halls breathless. This soul sister is also a sartorial star, sweeping stages in elegant-funky fashion as she brings down the house. A highly skilled singer-songwriter, Amanfu’s Standing Still track list also manages to spotlight a flawlessly curated collection of covers paying homage to musical icons (including Wilco, Irma Thomas, and Brandi Carlile) as Amanfu breathes new life into beloved classics and makes them completely her own. NPR Music raves, “Some of the original versions feel practically perfunctory next to Amanfu's renditions, so patiently and intently does she linger over lyrics, her phrasing dwelling on ambiguities and drawing intimate distress out into the open.” In a stand-out track, she gracefully transforms Kanye West’s “Street Lights” into a soulful, vulnerable, and heartfelt ballad.
