From the East come scholars, observers of the natural world, inheritors of an ancient written tradition. They bear the accumulated wisdom of the world’s first great civilization. And now every civilization’s work has come to fruition. They all see it. In a poor rural village, the savior of the world is born. To the Jordan River comes John the Baptist. He tells the crowd to repent, to stir themselves. God is on the move, and the time is short. And suddenly a man steps forward whom they feel to be different from any they have known. His baptism is like a storm, like fire, like a flock of doves. They all see it. He is the one they have come seeking. To the house of prayer come people of an ordinary town. They gather to hear the words their God spoke long ago. Then a man gets up and begins to speak, and the words of the prophets come to life in his mouth. They all see it. The story they are listening to—it is about them. Epiphany is a season for noticing the signs of God on the move, in our time, in our place. Come with us and see.

As a hallmark of good stewardship of the earth and our resources, this booklet is designed to be reused each week. Please return to an usher as you depart. A PDF is available for download at trinitychurchboston.org/publications

9 am Anthem Edward Elgar (1857-1934) The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor: He hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord; to give unto them that mourn a garland for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righ- teousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations – as the earth bringeth forth her bud. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 8 j Holy Eucharist season of epiphany at Trinity Church Boston February 3 Fourth Sunday after the epiphany Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: Now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope and charity, but the greatest of these is charity. Text: 1 Corinthians 13:1-4, 7-8, 12-13

Postlude Fugue from Sonata on the 94th Psalm Julius Reubke (1834-1858)

On Today’s Music Julius Reubke (1834-1858), German pianist, organist and composer, born into a family of organbuilders, lived to be only 24 years old. Though his life was short, he produced two spectacular, major works. His piano sonata in B Minor and today’s postlude – the last of three movements from his Sonata on the 94th Psalm in C Minor for organ – are considered pinnacles of the Romantic keyboard repertoire. As a “symphonic poem”, the final movement of Reubke’s organ sonata is a turbulent, agitated, furious fugue, culminating in a massive ending that depicts divine judgement, as found in Psalm 94: 22-23. “But the Lord is my refuge: and my God is the strength of confidence. He shall recompense them their wickedness, and destroy them in their own malice.”

Before the mountains were brought faith or ever the earth and the world were made, thou art God from everlasting, and world without end. Lord, what is man, that thou hast such respect unto him; or the son of man, that thou so regardest him? Man is like a thing of nought: his time passeth away like a shadow, but thou, O Lord, shalt endure for ever, and thy remembrance throughout all generations. Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Sion, yea the time is come that thou have mercy. Comfort us again, now after the time that thou hast plagued us; and for the years wherein we have suffered adversity. Amen.
