Despite progress having been made, almost 850 million people in the world are esti- mated not to have enough food to lead active and healthy lives. Agriculture and food systems face the enormous challenge of meeting the growing demand for more and higher quality foods, while supply is limited by the scarcity of good agricultural land, climate change, and additional demand for bioenergy as well as social and economic constraints. Apart from analysing driving forces and limitations, the seminar will address options to provide ample and healthy food that meets the nutritional needs of the world’s growing population. The seminar will also look at obstacles for innovation and implementation. The exhibition presents selected examples from two artistic projects: “Let the Children Play” and “The Children’s Play”. What they have in common is the ambition to create a living illustration of the right to play (Article 31 of the UN Convention ot the Rights of the Child). The local involvement of children and youth supporting organisations in the project ensures that the young public involved in the projects inherits a sustainable educational legacy. Fritz Molden, pioneer and companion of the European Forum Alpbach and one of the most colourful personalities in Austria’s political and cultural life, died in January 2014. Engaged in the resistance against the NS-Regime in his youth, after the end of the Se- cond World War he initially became a diplomat, then a journalist, newspaper tsar and Austria’s most courageous large publisher. The striking constant in this ever-changing life was his commitment to Austria, which he loved with patriotic passion. In memory of this great Austrian and “Alpbacher”, a historian, friends, and companions converse about a life led according to convictions and fearless of the risks this entailed. Fritz Molden, der im Jänner 2014 verstorbene Wegbereiter und -begleiter des Europäischen Forums Alpbach, war eine der schillerndsten Persönlichkeiten der Zweiten Republik. Schon als Jugendlicher im Widerstand gegen das NS-Regime engagiert, wurde er nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges zunächst Diplomat, dann Journalist, Zeitungszar und Österreichs wagemutigster Großverleger. Die große Konstante in diesem wechselhaften Leben war sein Einsatz für Österreich, dem er mit patriotischer Hingabe verbunden war. Im Andenken an diesen großen Österreicher und „Alpbacher“ sprechen eine Historikerin, Freunde und Weggefährten über ein Leben nach Überzeugungen und ohne Angst vor dem Risiko.

“Improving” the human organism is a permanent issue for regulatory systems and institutions in religion, public administration, philosophy and cultural studies. The desire for physiological and biotechnological improvements has recently increased in line with new achievements in life sciences and neurophysiology. Providers, clients and the entire market for promised improvements at molecular biology level tend to disregard the cultural dimension of life as a design phenomenon that literally takes a lifetime to evolve. Instead, it is implied or sometimes even asserted that improvement(s) can be achieved by a single medical or surgical intervention. This year’s Vienna Lecture at Alpbach focuses on discussing physiological and molecular biology interventions aimed at “optimising humans” with a view to current reality, possible prospects and consequences. Die „Verbesserung“ des Menschen ist ein durchgehendes Thema der normativen Systeme und Institutionen in den Bereichen der Religion, des Staates, aber auch in der Philosophie und in den Kulturwissenschaften. In jüngster Zeit verstärkt sich im Zusammenhang mit den Erfolgen der Life Sciences und der Neurophysiologie der Wunsch nach physiologischen, aber auch nach biotechnologischen Verbesserungen. AnbieterInnen, KundInnen und der Markt für molekularbiologische Verbesserungsversprechen blenden häufig die kulturelle Dimension, die das Leben als Gestaltungsentwicklung sieht aus. Vermittelt wird bisweilen implizit, manch- mal auch explizit, dass Verbesserung(en) gleichsam durch einen einmaligen Eingriff, quasi eine Operation, geleistet werden könnte(n).

VENUES AND TRANSLATION The plenary sessions take place in the Congress Centre Alpbach. The breakout sessions are held in the Alpbach Secondary School (Hauptschule) and in different hotels. For further information regarding the venues, please observe the current programmes mentioned above. The plenary sessions taking place in the Erwin-Schrödinger-Saal and the Liechtenstein-Hayek-Saal are translated simultaneously into English and German. Earphones and receivers can be obtained at the door – please hand them back after the plenary session. Our special thanks go to the interpreters who, out of the affinity to the forum, kindly forego their usual fee and instead translate for a small daily compensation. Information about the language of each plenary session can be found online, through our app and in the printed conference programme.

ALPBACH BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT From and to Alpbach there is a daily public bus line (bus line 4074), as well as a free shuttle service (from Wörgl via Alpbach to Inneralpbach). In addition, there is a free night shuttle from Böglerhof bus-stop to Inneralpbach-Reith- Kramsach-Brixlegg. The shuttle service is offered free of charge thanks to the support of our partner the ÖBB-Postbus GmbH. Upon registration at your accommodation you will receive the Alpbachtal Seenland Card which enables you to use the public bus free of charge during the entire duration of the Forum. The Alpbach cab company Taxi Moser offers special rates to the participants of the European Forum Alpbach. Please check our website (under the category ‘Alpbach by Public Transport’) for further information, timetables and contact details.

CHILDCARE As in previous years, we offer professional childcare for children from the age of 2 whose parents are registered participants in the European Forum Alpbach. GREEN MEETING ALPBACH Green Meeting Alpbach is a project initiated by the European Forum Alpbach and the Congress Centre Alpbach, in order to make our events more sustainable and ecologically responsible.
