Celebrate reading by entering Ehrhardt’s HallowReading Decorating Contest!

Ehrhardt Library is having a HallowReading Celebration the week of October 23rd through October 27th. We are celebrating reading with our 6th annual Storybook Hat Decorating Contest.

Here’s what we want you to do: 1) Ask your Ehrhardt student to identify his/her favorite fiction (make-believe) storybook. 2) Find an old hat around the house, purchase a hat, or make your own. The hat could be a , , plastic hat, , Santa hat, witch’s hat, birthday hat or hand-made—the options are limitless. We will be selling colored baseball in the library for $2.00 if you would like to purchase one here. 3) Work with your child to decorate the hat so that it either represents the storybook itself, a character from the book, or a hat worn by a character in the book.

To decorate—use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, or other craft items.

This is intended to be a fun family project to celebrate the love of reading!!! All must be turned in on October 23rd, no later than 9:00 am.

Hats must relate to a specific fictional storybook or the hat will not be included in the contest. Since the purpose of the contest is to celebrate reading, please do not use books related to Cartoon/TV/Movie characters unless it was a book first. For example, no Spongebob, Barbie, Disney characters, Pokemon, etc. Harry Potter is okay because it was a book before it became a movie. Also, hats decorated like scary Halloween monsters, goblins, witches, etc. will not be allowed.

Hats will be displayed in the library the week of October 23rd - October 27th. Therefore, be sure the hat can stand up on its own. Bring some newspaper stuffing to put inside the hat if needed. Everyone who participates will receive a bookmark and a HallowReading Hat Pass so that they will be allowed to wear their Storybook Hat to school on Halloween, Monday, October 31st. Be sure your child is able to wear their hat if they would like to wear it to school the following week.

Please label the hat with your child’s name, the name of your child’s teacher, and the title of the book your hat represents using the following label. All labels should already be filled and cut off. We will tape the label in front of the hat after it is placed on the correct grade level table in the library.

Winning hats will be announced on Friday, October 27th. All winners will receive a $5 gift certificate to spend at Ehrhardt’s Book Fair in December. We always keep a list of winners to make sure everyone spends their money.

All hats will need to be picked up by 3:30 p.m. Friday, October 27th. Then students may bring their hat back to school and wear it on Halloween, Tuesday, October 31st.

We are looking forward to this fall activity where our students and their families celebrate reading and their love of books.
