The National Newsletter of the SONS and DAUGHTERS of PEARL HARBOR SURVIVORS, INC.

“Pearl Harbor ~ December 7, 1941 ~ Lest We Forget” Winter Edition FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT . . . . .

I am humbled by your confidence shown to me in our recent election and honored to represent this great organization. Support was shown in many ways which I appreciate and wish to thank all the members for this. Ohio Lake Erie Chapter 2 Members and Carol Gladys, National Secretary, presented me with an engraved business card holder and a certificate showing a donation in my father's name to the Pearl Harbor Memorial Museum in Hawaii. Kathleen Farley, CA State Chair presented me with the original SDPHS CHARTER! A very special "Thank you to the anonymous Pearl Harbor survivor" who had this in keeping and entrusted Kathleen to present it at our meeting! I will have it preserved and Kathleen Farley presents National President, framed for display at our next convention in 2012. We will always be grateful to the PHSA for their Lou Large, with the original SDPHS Charter ongoing support. They have continuously provided convention rooms for our Small Stores and meetings during the business meeting. at no cost to us and have included us in the planning of convention activities. I was honored to address the PHSA members prior to their business meeting in Hawaii. I reassured them of our support and future plans to carry on their legacy. I asked that all of them encourage their children to become members of the SDPHS and if there were any problems in accomplishing this, they contact me personally! Welcome to our new Prescott, Arizona Chapter and new National Officers and State Chairs. It takes a lot of work to keep building and strengthening our organization. Plans for many new projects are in the works and will be made known as they are finalized. We do not want to lose what so many SDPHS National President Lou Large addresses past officers and members have worked so hard to accomplish the Pearl Harbor Survivors in Hawaii. but to refine it and offer more to our members, cut our costs and expand our membership to keep the memories alive of Joanne Adams represents SDPHS our Pearl Harbor survivors. We need to cement their memories into our nation's memory so there is more speaking before a crowd during a than just a paragraph in our school's history books and no one forgets our Pearl Harbor survivors and what Memorial Service at Ewa Field. they endured to keep our country's Freedom alive! A NEW CHAPTER IS FORMED ARIZONA Bill Williamson, State Chair Pearl Harbor Survivor Association members took part in the ceremonies Prescott, Arizona officers as did the SDPHS members. FROM THE NATIONAL VICE PRESIDENT . . . . .

This week, I read a news article entitled: Great War fades into history as last veteran is dead at 110. Frank Buckles, the last U.S. Military Veteran of WWI passed away. As I read the article several times, a number of excerpts resonated in my mind: “No one left to answer what it was like in the trenches?” “There’s no one left to ask. “The Great War has almost passed from living memory.” “The Veterans have slipped away, one by one, their obituaries marking the end of the line in country after country.” This sad passing, coupled with those resonating questions, reinforces my commitment to our great charge as Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. “Lest We Forget” must remain our guiding banner, lifted high, as we work together to ensure that the legacy of the Pearl Harbor survivors is never forgotten, and is never allowed “to pass from living memory.” My hope and prayer is that the SDPHS will forever raise that banner, and expand far beyond sons and daughters to all relatives of future generations. The sacrifices of the Pearl Harbor survivors should never be allowed to “fade into history or pass from living memory.” We have a duty to the PHSA members to carry “their story of sacrifice” forward in perpetuity. One of my goals as VP is to search out family members and work to increase our membership beyond just sons and daughters and to charge future generations with the responsibility of keeping the Pearl Harbor survivor story “alive” after we, the sons and daughters, are gone. The greatest gift of service we can give the survivors is to ensure that future generations are here to tell their story. I wish to express my deep gratitude and humility to our entire SDPHS membership, voiced by your confidence in electing me National Vice President. I pledge to serve with respect, integrity and to the best of my ability. I look forward to working with Lou Large, the Executive Board and the entire membership in the performance of my duties. Thanks again for your vote of confidence. I’m most excited about meeting as many of the members as possible in the future. Let’s keep Pearl Harbor memories and the survivors alive – “Pearl Harbor – December 7, 1941 – Lest We Forget”! Mahalo, Ian MacDonald

FROM THE NATIONAL SECRETARY . . . . .

It doesn’t seem possible that three months have passed since I was in Hawaii attending the Convention. What a terrific experience to meet many Pearl Harbor Survivors, their spouses, and also our fellow SDPHS members. I wish to thank everyone who voted for me as your National Secretary. I will try to be worthy of the confidence you showed in me by performing the duties of the office in a timely manner. To date, I have mailed out 91 new member applications and that does not include the ones I handed out at the convention. I sincerely hope that most, if not all, will follow thru with the paper work and become members. If you have family members who are eligible, please encourage them to join. It is thru our membership that we will keep alive the memory of December 7, 1941. Mahalo, Carol Gladys

FROM THE NATIONAL TREASURER . . . . .

Stepping in for Al Pomeroy as your National Treasurer, I am certainly the new kid on the block, having only belonged to SDPHS since 2005. Nevertheless, like many of you, I grew up around PHSA picnics, State convention preparations, and family friends from around the country. As we face the challenge of assisting our aging parents and the PHSA, I stand ready to serve you and honor our ancestors, hoping to follow in the steady footsteps of current and past SDPHS leadership with enthusiasm and dedication. Mahalo, Linda Nemeth

OKLAHOMA - Bruce Scott, State Chair The annual “Last Mans Club” picnic was held Sept. 18 at Jerry Puryear’s home. His father “Red” Puryear, a Pearl Harbor survivor (now deceased) had made a special pavilion just for these occasions. The tradition continues. The fellowship and food were awesome. PH survivor, Arles Cole, USS West Virginia, reported his plan to attend an upcoming WWII meeting in Washington D.C. Mr. Lonnie Cook, one of the last survivors from the USS Arizona plans to attend the 2010 Pearl Harbor commemoration with his wife Marietta. Requests for application forms for SDPHS membership were distributed to all family members in attendance. Also, Joe Todd, who has met and interviewed many area PH survivors, has agreed to contact their family members and distribute more requests for applications. My goal is to have a minimum of 7 new SDPHS members by Dec. 7th and begin to form a new chapter. Other survivors in attendance were: Howell Ballard, US Army; Gene Meeker, NAS Kaneohe; Robert Norman, USS Nevada; and Jay Jernigan, USS Wright.

SOUTH CAROLINA Robin Hardee, State Chair We created a Wall of Honor for each South Carolina loss in Afghanistan and Iraq. During the last year we have been able to go to 13 different festivals and the Gator Bowl to display our Wall of Honor. We have a table in front of a tent with a flag from one of our survivors who passed away. We have literature on Pearl Harbor, the survi- vors, and SDPHS. The public seems to flock to our tent as we have had a survivor with us on occasion. We have had some great conversations with relatives of survivors, World War II survivors and many more people. We have met many veterans who like to stay and talk. So many Wall of Honor times they tell me that we are forgetting. I will tell you OUR SOUTH CAROLINA CHAPTER WILL NEVER FORGET OUR BRAVE MEN AND WOMEN WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR OUR FREEDOM AND ARE STILL DOING SO.

SOUTH CAROLINA - Gordon Sparks DECEMBER 5th - MONUMENT- We had four survivors, Tom Ryan, Russ Meyne, Bronsil Metz and Frank Winneman attend at the park along with six others. It was a short service where we honored those that died on Dec. 7, 1941 and also for those that died in 2009. Then we all went to the home of Carolyn & Gordon Sparks for lunch and a great time of fellowship. DECEMBER 7th - SERVICES – A service was held aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston with 11 survivors in attendance: Don Ralph, Tom Ryan, Russ Meyne, Bob Mills, John Lawhon, David (Buck) Morris, Frank Winneman, Jay Strange, Edd Crews, George Denton, and Joe Spears. Also in attendance were several Sons & Daughters. The service consisted of the laying of the wreaths and a speech by Ret. Maj. Gen. James E. Livingston USMC (Ret.) and a Medal of Honor recipient. The service also included the Tolling of the Bell for each of the twenty five (25) South Carolinians that died at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day. Each of the survivors were recognized and they told what they were doing on that day. 7 Offspring Issue 1, 2011 STATE/CHAPTER REPORTS

WASHINGTON - Rosemary Foster, State Chair RAY DAVES RECEIVES AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL TOWER HONORS There apparently is only one federal air traffic control tower named for anyone, and Spokane, WA. has it! By act of Congress, the tower at Spokane International Airport was named for Ray Daves, retired air traffic controller & World War II veteran who survived the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor and the 1942 sinking of the carrier USS Yorktown. Daves is also the father of the SDPHS National Trustee and previous WA State Chair, Rayma Daves. “By naming the control tower after Ray, we will remind all those who come here of this great patriot who represents the best of our nation,” said U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who presented Daves with an official copy of the bill. Daves, 90, a Navy radio operator during the war, went to work for the Civil Aeronautics Authority in Spokane in 1946 and retired from the renamed Federal Aviation SPOKANE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT - Rep. Cathy Administration in 1973. Surrounded by family and friends in the tower’s ground-floor offices, McMorris Rodgers, left, presents Ray Daves with a copy he accepted the honor on behalf of all FAA employees, “past, present and future." of the Act of Congress it took to get the Spokane Air- port Tower named after him. “I am deeply grateful to all those who made today possible,” Daves said. “This is a great honor which I accept with a humble heart.” Congratulations Ray - the SDPHS members are proud of you!

PEARL HARBOR SURVIVORS HONORED By Bill High (Child Survivor) Two Pearl Harbor U.S. Navy survivors were honored at the 2010 Military History Encampment, Arlington, Washington. Cecil Calavan served aboard the USS Utah and Anthony Nady served aboard the USS Nevada. Both men live in the Pacific Northwest.

Annually, the Arlington Fly-in hosts one of the Nation’s largest gatherings of former military vehicles, aircraft and equipment. Both sailors visited with the attending public and shared their experiences. Upon seeing a newly restored Oerlikon anti-aircraft cannon on display, Cecil Calavan was prompted to share one of his encounters with that historic weapon. While serving as a cannon crew member, he accidently placed his hand in contact with the recoil section. As the Pearl Harbor survivor Cecil Calavan (USS Utah) weapon fired and compressed the recoil spring, his finger was amputated. demonstrated how his finger was amputated by the Oerlikon anti-aircraft cannon recoil spring The North Pacific Military Corps annually brings military history to life by creating a military encampment at the Arlington Washington Fly-in. USS VESTAL (AR-4) Circa 1909 - 1912 USS Vestal (AR-4) began as the Erie (Fleet No. 1) in April 1904 and was renamed Vestal in October 1905. The Vestal was placed in service with a civilian crew in 1909 and was commissioned as a fleet in 1913 under Comdr. E. L. Beach, Sr. Vestal served between 1909 and 1946 in both World Wars I and II. Vestal, one of the two oldest ships at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, received two battle stars for her World War II service.

Following the U.S. entry into , Vestal was deployed to Queenstown, for the duration of the war and beyond. In 1925 she underwent modification that changed her from being coal-powered to oil-fired. When the Pacific Fleet was shifted to Pearl Harbor in 1940, Vestal also made the move. On 6 December 1941, she was moored alongside USS Arizona, to provide services during Arizona’s scheduled period of upkeep between 6 and 12 December. Beached on the shoal The routine of a peacetime Sunday, 7 December, was shattered by Japanese aircraft. Two bombs, intended for the of ‘Aiea Bay inboard, the repair ship. One struck the port side and the second hit the starboard side of the ship. A bomb penetrated Arizona's deck near the starboard side and the forward part of the battleship exploded; the concussion from the explosion literally cleared Vestal's deck of men, including the commanding officer. The captain swam back to the ship and ordered the ship underway. The explosion touched off oil from the ruptured tanks of the Arizona which in turn caused fires on board Vestal, aft and amidship. Men forward cut Vestal's mooring lines, freeing her from the Arizona, and she got underway. A tug pulled Vestal's bow away from the inferno engulfing Arizona. She was slowly assuming a list to starboard and taking water aft. The ship being on fire in several places, the captain decided to ground the ship on ‘Aiea Bay. Although damaged herself, the Vestal participated in some salvage operations and sent repair parties to the over- turned hull of the Oklahoma. Within a week of the raid, Vestal's crew had their own ship ready for the rebuilding process. After repairs at Pearl Harbor, Vestal received orders to proceed to the South Pacific.

During the war the Vestal did 9,523 jobs for 584 ships.

The main danger to the fleet after surrendered was from . Vestal carried out many storm-damage repairs to the fleet for the rest of 1945. Vestal was ultimately decommissioned in August 1946. She lay inactive USS Vestle mooring quay before stripping began on 20 May 1949. Her hulk was sold on 28 July 1950 to the Metals Company, and memorial at Pearl Harbor subsequently scrapped.
