Welcome to our new Prescott, Arizona Chapter and new National Officers and State Chairs. It takes a lot of work to keep building and strengthening our organization. This week, I read a news article entitled: Great War fades into history as last veteran is dead at 110. Frank Buckles, the last U.S. Military Veteran of WWI passed away. As I read the article several times, a number of excerpts resonated in my mind: “No one left to answer what it was like in the trenches?” “There’s no one left to ask. “The Great War has almost passed from living memory.” “The Veterans have slipped away, one by one, their obituaries marking the end of the line in country after country.” This sad passing, coupled with those resonating questions, reinforces my commitment to our great charge as Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. “Lest We Forget” must remain our guiding banner, lifted high, as we work together to ensure that the legacy of the Pearl Harbor survivors is never forgotten, and is never allowed “to pass from living memory.” My hope and prayer is that the SDPHS will forever raise that banner, and expand far beyond sons and daughters to all relatives of future generations.

Blazich Jr., PhD Naval History and Heritage Command Introduction This document is intended to provide readers with a chronological progression of the activities of the United States Navy and its involvement with World War I as an outside observer, active participant, and victor engaged in the war’s lingering effects in the postwar period. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. • The Weeping Monument: a Pre and Post Depositional Site
THE WEEPING MONUMENT: A PRE AND POST DEPOSITIONAL SITE FORMATION STUDY OF THE USS ARIZONA by Valerie Rissel April, 2012 Director of Thesis: Dr. Brad Rodgers Major Department: Program in Maritime History and Archaeology Since its loss on December 7, 1941, the USS Arizona has been slowly leaking over 9 liters of oil per day. This issue has brought about conversations regarding the stability of the wreck, and the possibility of defueling the 500,000 to 600,000 gallons that are likely residing within the wreck. Because of the importance of the wreck site, a decision either way is one which should be carefully researched before any significant changes occur. This research would have to include not only the ship and its deterioration, but also the oil’s effects on the environment. This thesis combines the historical and current data regarding the USS Arizona with case studies of similar situations so a clearer picture of the future of the ship can be obtained. NEUROSURGICAL FOCUS Neurosurg Focus 39 (1):E9, 2015 The neurosurgeon as baseball fan and inventor: Walter Dandy and the batter’s helmet Ryan Brewster, BA, Wenya Linda Bi, MD, PhD, Timothy R. Smith, MD, PhD, MPH, William B. Gormley, MD, MPH, Ian F. Dunn, MD, and Edward R. Laws Jr., MD Department of Neurosurgery, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts Baseball maintains one of the highest impact injury rates in all athletics. A principal causative factor is the “beanball,” referring to a pitch thrown directly at a batter’s head. Frequent morbidities elicited demand for the development of protec- tive gear development in the 20th century. In this setting, Dr. Walter Dandy was commissioned to design a “protective cap” in 1941. His invention became widely adopted by professional baseball and inspired subsequent generations of bat- ting helmets. As a baseball aficionado since his youth, Walter Dandy identified a natural partnership between baseball and medical practice for the reduction of beaning-related brain injuries.
