  • Nationals Zimmerman Named NL Player of the Month
Nationals Zimmerman named NL Player of the Month Posted by TBNDavid On 05/05/2017 On the heels of his first National League Player of the Week award since 2012, Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman continued his early-season haul with the National League Player of the Month award for April. Major League Baseball made the announcement on MLB Network. Zimmerman, who set a Nationals record (2005-present) for RBI in a month with 29, entered May hitting .420 and leading the Major Leagues in batting average, slugging percentage (.886), RBI (29), OPS (1.345), home runs (T1st, 11), hits (37), and extra-base hits (1st, 19), while ranking second in multi-hit games (T2nd, 12). With 11 home runs in the season's first month, Zimmerman set the franchise record for home runs in the month of March/April, and tied his own career best for home runs in any single month. The 11 home runs marked Zimmerman's first calendar month with that many longballs since September 2013, when he also hit 11. The month was also one in which Zimmerman moved his way up multiple franchise leaderboards (Nationals/Expos), passing Hall of Fame players in the process. On April 19, Zimmerman passed Andre Dawson to move into second on the franchise's all-time RBI list with 840. By month's end, he had increased that total to 858. On April 23, the Nationals' first baseman moved past Hall of Famer Gary Carter for third on the franchise's all-time home run list, and on April 28, he moved into second place on that same list, passing Dawson with his 226th career home run.

  • Why Did Cleveland Indians Sign Mike Napoli Instead of Pedro Alvarez?
Why did Cleveland Indians sign Mike Napoli instead of Pedro Alvarez? Hey, Hoynsie Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio – Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him at @hoynsie. Hey, Hoynsie: Why did the Indians sign Mike Napoli, 34, for one year to play first base when Pedro Alvarez, 27, was available? Did management know Alvarez hit 27 home runs last season? -- Jimmy Garst, Roanoke, Va. Hey, Jimmy: The Indians did show interest in Alvarez, who was non-tendered by the Pirates and became a free agent. I think a couple of things probably came into play: No. 1, Alvarez was more expensive than the $7 million deal the Indians agreed to with Napoli. No. 2, the Indians felt Napoli helped them two ways – he gave their offense needed pop from the right side of the plate and he improved their defense. Napoli – whose deal should soon be made official – allows the Indians to move Carlos Santana to DH while he will get most of the time at first base. There is no doubt about Alvarez's power, but he made 23 errors at first base last season. I think the Indians preferred Napoli, considering the cost, at first and Santana at DH instead of Santana at first and Alvarez at DH. Hey, Hoynsie: The Reds seem interested in moving outfielder Jay Bruce. Is the Tribe done with its outfield or would it be interested in a guy who is as streaky hitter as there is, but definitely has pop? – Carl Neifer, Cincinnati.

  • Introduction
11 INTRODUCTION As the 20th century melted into the 21st, the well-meaning folks at Minor League Baseball made plans to celebrate the 100 greatest teams in the history of the minors since 1901. A hundred teams for 100 years. Assigned to rank the teams were highly respected baseball historians Bill Weiss and Marshall Wright. The job — as with all efforts like this — was a thankless one for Weiss and Wright. Really now, who could say for sure if the 1920 St. Paul Saints, who were No. 6 on their list, were that much better than, say, the 1990 West Palm Beach Expos, who checked in at No. 89? C’mon, were the 1903 Jersey City Skeeters appreciably better at No. 7 than the 1983 Reading Phillies were at 62? How does one differentiate between teams? The teams ranked in the Top 100 played in different classifications in dramatically different eras with demographics that kept teams in the minors from being nothing more than a whites-only club until 1946, when Jackie Robinson made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers’ top farm team in Montreal. These variables made the rankings flawed from the outset, when the 1944 Milwaukee Brewers were the first team announced at No. 100. Eventually, the countdown reached 73, and that was where Minor League Baseball placed the 1993 Harrisburg Senators. Seventy-freaking-third. Anybody who saw that team knew better. More than 15 years after its release at the turn of the new millennium, the MiLB Top 100 list — specifically, Harrisburg’s ranking — still irked Jim Tracy, the Senators’ manager in 1993.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 41, No. 1, January 30, 2002) Barry on Baseball NCBWA President’s Message by Barry Allen The wait is finally over. The 2002 college baseball season has officially begun. While most of the schools do not open play until Feb. 1, 2002, there are some that have already opened their seasons entering the final week of January. The 2002 college baseball season promises to be one of the most exciting seasons in memory. Can Miami make it three in a row at Rosenblatt Stadium? The defending champs return a number of key players and will play one of the nation's most demanding schedules. How will baseball at Alex Box Stadium differ now that legendary Skip Bertman is no longer in the first base dugout? New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. There will be a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this year as the annual CoSIDA convention will be held in Rochester, N.Y.

Thank you. A Summer Wildfire: How the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three months by Colin Thomas Reynolds, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 SUPERVISORS: Tracy Dahlby & Bill Minutaglio The narrative itself is an ageless one, a fundamental Shakespearean tragedy in its progression. A young man is deemed invaluable and exalted by the public. The hero is cast into the spotlight and bestowed with insurmountable expectations. But the acclamations and pressures are burdensome and the invented savior fails to fulfill the prospects once imagined by the public. The protagonist of this report is Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season before it ended abruptly due to a severe elbow injury.
