Page 1 Weightlifting Scotland Newsletter Number 24 – December 2013 9th November – Scottish Seniors at Live Active Atholl, Pitlochry There were forty qualifiers selected for these championships, nineteen of whom were female. Out of these seventeen females and thirteen males lifted on the day. Female Report The three competitors in the 48kg class were all from the Gladiator club, with Amanda Craig once again getting the better of her daughter Charley by 7kg. Amanda’s 44kg snatch, 52kg clean & jerk and 96kg total were all Scottish Masters records for the (40 to 44 years) class. Emily McKibbin finished in third place with a 77kg total. The 53kg class was won by Colette Will from the Gladiator club, with local lifter Rowan Morrogh Bernard second and Kilmarnock’s Jill Brown third. Colette’s 57kg snatch, 75kg clean & jerk and 132kg total were new Scottish senior and U-23 records, unfortunately for Colette her total is still 6kg away from the Commonwealth Games qualifying. Kilmarnock’s Sophie Smyth triumphed in the 58kg class, with a 137kg total well below her best, but Sophie has already qualified for Glasgow 2014. Kerry McLaughlin of the Gladiator club took second place with a personal best total of 124kg comfortably ahead of club mate Holly Anderson. British senior champion Jane Armour, Kilmarnock, comfortably won the 63kg class even though Jane only got her opening lifts of 65kg and 85kg for a 150kg total. Jane missed four attempts at Scottish senior records, and finished 5kg off Games qualifying. The contest for second place was much closer, with Rebekah Madden of the Langcroft club, finishing 1kg ahead of Katinka Geczi from Edinburgh. The 69kg class was a very close battle between Georgi Black and Louise Mather with both lifters exceeding the Glasgow 2014 qualification total. Kilmarnock’s Georgi successfully defended her title with a 78kg snatch and a 100kg clean & jerk for a 178kg total which won her the best lifter award. Louise achieved new personal bests with a 75kg snatch, and a 96kg clean and jerk for a 171kg total. Jenny McIntyre won the 75kg class, with a 66kg snatch and an 83kg jerk for a 149kg total, which was only 4kg ahead of Amy Liu of the Gladiator club, who snatched 60kg and jerked 85kg for a 145kg total. It is certainly good to see an increase in the number of female lifters qualifying for these championships, and what is even more heartening is that three of the qualifiers were only thirteen years of age. Best Female Lifter – Georgi Black (Kilmarnock WLC) – 227.33 Sinclair Points 2nd Place – Louise Mather (Gladiator WLC) – 215.33 Sinclair Points 3rd Place – Colette Will (Gladiator WLC) – 207.50 Sinclair Points The views expressed in this newsletter are not necessarily those of the Editor or Weightlifting Scotland. Page 2 Weightlifting Scotland Newsletter Number 24 – December 2013 Male Report There were no qualifiers for the 56kg and 62kg classes, so the first competitive class was the 69kg class, with the sole entrant Craig Carfray from Kilmarnock winning. Craig was making a comeback after injury, and was some way off his best total, but still snatched 105kg and jerked 136kg for a very respectable 241kg total. The 77kg class was a close competition, between Gladiator Haris Ansari and Andrew Benton from Aberdeen. Haris ended up winning the class by 3kg with his opening clean & jerk of 120kg. The closest battle of the day came in the 85kg class with Allan Young of the Glasgow City Barbell club winning by 1kg from Edinburgh’s Ashley Wiles. Only bodyweight separated both lifters after they snatched 100kg which at the time put them 3kg behind leader Andy Tsang. Unfortunately for Andy, he failed all of his attempts to clean & jerk 125kg this left the way clear for Allan to win with his 218kg total. The 94kg class was an all Kilmarnock affair with a below par Dale Cree comfortably winning over Jordon Haydon by 15kg. Dale snatched 120kg and clean & jerked 140kg for a 260kg total. Kilmarnock’s Peter Kirkbride triumphed in the 105kg class with a 140kg snatch, and a hard fought 180kg jerk, in which Peter almost walked round the whole platform with, before being given the down signal. Peter’s 320kg total qualified him for Glasgow 2014. Callum Downie from the Gladiator club took the silver and set new Scottish U-23 records with his 160kg clean & jerk and 285kg total. Zach Courtney from Edinburgh came third with a 266kg total and, Stuart Cadger from the Bartons club fourth with a 250kg total. Lewis Thomson from the Spartan A.T. club in Aberdeen won the 105+kg class. Lewis set a new Scottish U-23 record with his 121kg snatch, then went on to jerk 145kg for a 266kg total. Best Male Lifter – Peter Kirkbride (Kilmarnock WLC) – 363.60 Sinclair Points 2nd Place – Craig Carfray (Kilmarnock WLC) – 327.59 Sinclair Points 3rd Place – Callum Downie (Gladiator WLC) – 314.96 Sinclair Points Organiser – Alex Phillips Speaker – Colin Hannah Technical Officials – Jim Ferguson – Jim Holland – George Byng – Charlie Revolta – Jean McConville – Liz Richardson – Ian Burke – Amanda Craig – Alex Phillips Loaders – Alan Davidson – Paul Walker – Robert Borthwick – Paul Rae – Ian Robertson The views expressed in this newsletter are not necessarily those of the Editor or Weightlifting Scotland. As I sat down to write this Editor’s Letter about these life affirming, heart warming stories, the news flashed on the TV about the bombing of the Boston Marathon and the subject of sport and its ability to heal and build understanding between people took on an added poignancy. With a few awful exceptions, sport manages to exist beyond the reach of such horrors, providing a sanctuary for people from all walks of life and an escape from a whole range of difficult PHOTO CREDIT: WWW.ACTIONPLUS.CO.UK WWW.ACTIONPLUS.CO.UK PHOTO CREDIT: circumstances, from war to economic pressures and ill health. Attacks on sport arouse deep seated revulsion for this reason. • Our Sporting Heroes
Our Sporting Heroes The Royal Welch Fusiliers has associations with many successful and elite sportsmen. Some reached the pinnacle of their success when serving with the Regiment; others laid the foundations of later success during their service. A selection of their stories can be found on these pages. Sport has long been important to the British Army, as a means of furthering fitness, team spirit and individual achievement. The RWF Depot Cricket Team, 1898 Prize fights in the Army were established early in the 19th century and a formal School of Army Gymnastics was set up at Aldershot after the Crimean War. Sport was included in 19th century Army reforms designed to improve the lot of the ordinary soldier and as a stimulus to recruiting. Physical Education played an important role in training while other sports were used to bring a sense of discipline to recreation. Soldiers had a lot of recreation time to fill, particularly those on garrison duty abroad. Officers brought an enthusiasm for sport engendered at public schools. Sport was therefore an 1st Battalion RWF Football Team, interest that could be shared by both officers and men - good for inter-rank relationships. Dublin 1912 Football and Rugby Football have traditionally been the most popular sports in the Army reflecting the situation in civilian life. Annual Army Athletics Meetings were held from 1876. After an initial reluctance to embrace the sport, Army Boxing Championships were established from 1892. Indian Army Boxing 2nd Battalion RWF Boxing Team, Hong Kong Championships were in place by 1912. 1937 Sport is still included in routine fitness training and units hold regular sporting events.

  • Letter to Prime Minister
The Rt Hon Boris Johnson The Prime Minister 10 Downing Street London SW1A 2AA 23rd September 2020 Dear Prime Minister, A Green Recovery from the COVID-19 Pandemic If it were not for the COVID-19 pandemic, the world’s hearts and minds would have been captured this summer by the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games: events that have "Passing on Legacy for the Future” as part of their core mission. Yet the years where that Legacy will unfold are under acute threat from climate change. In February this year, you confirmed that "there can be no greater responsibility than protecting our planet, and no mission that a Global Britain is prouder to serve”. With the COP26 and G7 presidencies next year, the UK has a golden opportunity to show international leadership on the most important issue facing humankind. We can sit timidly in the pack, pretending that we have no role to play in the unfolding race. Or, like the athletes we would have watched this summer, we can race to win. We urge your Government to act consistently with the recognised need for “urgent action”, by developing a truly Green approach to recovery from the pandemic. In championing this approach, the UK can take confidence from the last months, which have demonstrated the incredible capacity our society has to make huge alterations from “business as usual” in order to protect one another. The economic benefits of pursuing a Green recovery have also received emphatic endorsement from the Committee on Climate Change, the present and former Governors of the Bank of England, and research from Oxford University.
