OCEANIA WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION Newsletter COMMONWEALTH GAMES PREVIEW.. March 20, 2018 Will the medal trend at Commonwealth Games continue for Nauru ? In 1990, the tiny island nation of Nauru – population 10,000 - took part for the first time ever in a Commonwealth Games. Nobody, but nobody in the Commonwealth expected the outcome. They had only one participant. He was the flag bearer and again the only representative of this tiny island. His name was Marcus Stephen. A young boy coached by Paul Coffa in Melbourne, where his father was the Nauru Ambassador to Australia and where Marcus was studying. The college where he was a boarder at St. Bedes College in Melbourne. After the 60kg category finished, a new era for the sport of weightlifting was born in the Pacific. A young Marcus finished up with 3 medals. Gold in the snatch, silver in the clean & jerk and silver in the total. The media was scrambling to find an atlas to see where this island nation of Nauru was. Google in those days of course was non existent. But finding young Marcus was very easy , he was back in training the day after. Marcus Stephen with his 3 Medals from the 1990 Commonwealth Games. A few days after Marcus’s incredible performance , the Queen had invited certain athletes to a luncheon. This invitation included Marcus Stephen who was at that time the novelty. Incredibly however, Marcus Stephen politely declined the invitation. • Oceania Weightlifting Federation
Oceania Weightlifting Federation Latest News November , 2011 The 2011 World Championships held in Disneyland, Paris, came to an end on November 13th with a brilliant display of lifting by Iranian superstar Salimikordasiabi Behdad in the 105+kg category. Also the battle between Zhou Lulu from China and Tatiana Kashirina from Russia in the 75+kg women category, both athletes lifted brilliantly, establishing new world records, Tatiana snatching 147Kg and Lulu making a total of 328Kg on this final day. The championships itself set out to break all entry records but unfortunately this did not happen. Almost 730 lifters entered but at the end 519 took part in the men and women. Therefore it did not reach the phenomenal figure of 624 lifters competing at the 1999 World Championships held in Athens. Paris did a very good job in almost all areas. The venue, accommodation, crowd, and the training hall was excellent. The fact that everything was within walking distance made it easy for everyone. Competition was very well presented and the only criticism which could be made was in the accreditation and finance process where many countries complained of the long wait. However as usual, once the competition started everybody forgot the long wait and enjoyed the battles in both the men and women which the competition provided day after day. Malek Chamoun (AUS) in action with 135Kg Manuel Minginfel (FSM) returning back to form. Ele Opeloge (SAM) preparing. There was some incredible performances. The Iranian super heavy Salimikordasiabi Behdad snatching 214kg for a new world record was an awesome performance to witness.
