Introduction The concept of Gedanke in Wittgenstein's Tractatus is a controversial one. The few elucidations he gives of it seem to give rise to two opposing interpretations. On the one hand, a thought is said to be a logical picture of facts (TLP§3) and a proposition with a sense (TLP§4). This suggests a non-mentalist reading of the concept, i.e. one according to which a thought is, in its essence, no different from a written or spoken sentence: both depict states of affairs in virtue of being combinations of signs that reflect the logical form of reality. A non-mentalist interpretation of thoughts has been advocated, e.g. by Mounce (1981), Winch (1987) and Carruthers (1989). On the other hand, Wittgenstein makes a distinction between a proposition and a propositional sign, and says of the latter that it needs to be projected onto reality before it is a genuine picture (TLP§3.12). The method of projection is "to think of the sense of the proposition" (TLP§3.11), which gives the impression that a mental process of thinking is needed to give life to signs; in other words, that thoughts (being the 'units' of thinking) are prior to, and necessary preconditions of, the possibility of linguistic representation. Such a mentalist or psychological interpretation has been advanced, among others, by Kannisto (1986), Summerfield (1992), Malcolm (1993) and Hacker (1996). In this paper I attempt to defend the non-mentalist interpretation of Gedanke. My aim in doing this is, besides trying to contribute to a correct understanding of the Tractatus, to cut off certain connections that have been claimed to exist between the book and modern philosophy of mind. In particular, I try to refute Malcolm's and Summerfield's suggestion that, like Chomsky or Fodor, Wittgenstein needs to assume an underlying mental mechanism or a language of thought to account for the possibility of determinate representation. Therefore the paper is organized around a presentation and a critical discussion of (some of) Malcolm's and Summerfield's views. The main argument put forward against their views is that, whether such mental processes occur during language-using or not, speculation about them simply isn't relevant to Wittgenstein's picture theory of language. Far from taking psychological considerations to be essential to philosophical theories of linguistic meaning, the reading sketched here sees the 13 Maija Aalto Tractatus as criticizing all such theories and thus resembling, in this respect, his own later philosophy rather than contemporary philosophy of mind. 2. Introduction The idea that most art is to some extent algorithmic,1 whether produced by an actual computer or a human artist, may well represent the central theme of the Arts Special Issue “The Machine as Artist (for the 21st Century)” as it has evolved in the light of more than fifteen thoughtful contributions. This, in turn, brings forcibly to mind mathematician, computer scientist, and computer art pioneer Frieder Nake, one of a handful of pioneer artist-theorists who, for more than fifty years, have focused on algorithmic art per se, but who can also speak to the larger role of the algorithm within art. As a graduate student in mathematics at the University of Stuttgart in the mid-1960s (and from which he graduated with a PhD in Probability Theory in 1967), Nake was a core member, along with Siemens mathematician and philosophy graduate student Georg Nees, of the informal “Stuttgart School”, whose leader was philosophy professor Max Bense—one of the first academics to apply information processing principles to aesthetics.

    PETER GEACH Peter Thomas Geach 1916–2013 PETER GEACH was born on 29 March 1916 at 41, Royal Avenue, Chelsea. He was the son of George Hender Geach, a Cambridge graduate working in the Indian Educational Service (IES), who later taught philosophy at Lahore. George Geach was married to Eleonore Sgnonina, the daughter of a Polish civil engineer who had emigrated to England. The marriage was not a happy one: after a brief period in India Eleonore returned to England to give birth and never returned to her husband. Peter Geach’s first few years were spent in the house of his Polish grandparents in Cardiff, but at the age of four his father had him made the ward of a former nanny of his own, an elderly nonconformist lady named Miss Tarr. When Peter’s mother tried to visit him, Miss Tarr warned him that a dangerous mad woman was coming, so that he cowered away from her when she tried to embrace him. As she departed she threw a brick through a window, and from that point there was no further contact between mother and son. When he was eight years old he became a boarder at Llandaff Cathedral School. Soon afterwards his father was invalided out of the IES and took charge of his education. To the surprise of his Llandaff housemaster, Peter won a scholarship to Clifton College, Bristol. Geach père had learnt moral sciences at Trinity College Cambridge from Bertrand Russell and G. E. Moore, and he inducted his son into the delights of philosophy from an early age.

    David Suchoff Family Resemblances: Ludwig Wittgenstein as a Jewish Philosopher The admonition to silence with which Wittgenstein ended the Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1922) also marks the starting point for the emer- gence of his Jewish philosophical voice. Karl Kraus provides an instructive contrast: as a writer well known to Wittgenstein, Kraus’s outspoken and aggressive ridicule of “jüdeln” or “mauscheln” –the actual or alleged pronunciation of German with a Jewish or Yiddish accent – defined a “self-fashioning” of Jewish identity – from German and Hebrew in this case – that modeled false alternatives in philosophic terms.1 Kraus pre- sented Wittgenstein with an either-or choice between German and Jewish identity, while engaging in a witty but also unwitting illumination of the interplay between apparently exclusive alternatives that were linguistically influenced by the other’s voice. As Kraus became a touchstone for Ger- man Jewish writers from Franz Kafka to Walter Benjamin and Gershom Scholem, he also shed light on the situation that allowed Wittgenstein to develop his own non-essentialist notion of identity, as the term “family resemblance” emerged from his revaluation of the discourse around Judaism. This transition from The False Prison, as David Pears calls Wittgenstein’s move from the Tractatus to the Philosophical Investiga- tions, was also a transformation of the opposition between German and Jewish “identities,” and a recovery of the multiple differences from which such apparently stable entities continually draw in their interconnected forms of life.2 “I’ll teach you differences,” the line from King Lear that Wittgenstein mentioned to M. O’C. Drury as “not bad” as a “motto” for the Philo- sophical Investigations, in this way represents Wittgenstein’s assertion of a German Jewish philosophic position.

    Family-Memoirs – About strategies of creating identity in Vienna of the 1940s. By example of the family of Ludwig Wittgenstein. Nicole L. Immler, University of Graz My talk will be about one of the most quoted sources concerning the biography of the well known austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who studied philosophy in Cambridge and later became professor of philosophy at Trinity- College: The family memoirs written by Hermine Wittgenstein, the sister of the philosopher, in the years 1944–49 in Vienna.1 The Typescript is so far unpublished, with the exception of the section concerning Ludwig Wittgenstein 2, and was never contextualised as a whole. To use the Familienerinnerungen as a historical source it‘s f i r s t l y necessary to picture the relevance of family memoirs from the perspective of recent theories about memory culture. S e c o n d l y it is to ask about the general historical background of the literary genre family memoirs as such, about the intentions and functions of this genre as well as its origin. Specifically related to the Wittgenstein memoirs I want to follow the thesis, if they can be read as an example of a strategy to create identity for a bourgeois family in Vienna in the nineteenforties. Finally and f o u r t h y, I want to ‚proof- read‘ one argument made by Hermine Wittgenstein by comparing it to arguments of Ludwig Wittgenstein in his writings. Owing to their differences in living conditions, character and experiences, they have different approaches towards a geographical and emotional concept of home.

    In Honor of Brian McGuinness Josef Mitterer My relation to Brian McGuinness is the respectful relation of a younger colleague and -- many years back -- the relation of an admiring student who met him in Graz where he became an honorary professor in 1988. The achievements of Brian McGuinness have been praised so often and by so many that it is not easy to say something new, to find new praise which has not been offered already by someone else. The basic data: Brian was born 90 years and 4 days ago -- he studied at Oxford university and spent 35 years a Tutor, as a Fellow and a University Lecturer at Queens College. From 1989 to 2002 he was a Professor of History of Scientific Thought at the University of Siena. From the list of universities where he taught as a guest professor: Stanford, Princeton, Bejing, Rome, Leiden, Graz ... Brian McGuinness has authored and edited more than 30 books. They include a new translation of the Tractatus, the edition and translation of the Prototractatus -- both together with David Pears – and together with Joachim Schulte he published the definitive edition of the Tractatus, one of the most influential philosophical books of the 20th century. It is safe to say that nobody in Academia has done as much for the recognition of Wittgenstein in particular and of Austrian Philosophy in general as Brian McGuinness in the course of 60 years of writing and lecturing. The academic world is inhabited by a variety of species. A very rare one is that of the geniuses who publish very little in their lifetime but fill notebooks, journals and "Zettel" with ideas – (nowadays more likely hard discs or memory sticks) 1 which are then left to hardworking academics who clear up the mess and edit collected works which establish the lasting fame and influence of those thinkers.

Einleitung: die semantische Rolle der Tempora Unsere alltägliche, ,psychologische‘, aber auch die abstrakte newtonsche oder mathematische Vorstellung von Zeit – die ,klassischen‘ Zeitvorstellungen – laufen darauf hinaus, dass es eine einfache lineare Abfolge von Vergangen- heit-Gegenwart-Zukunft gibt. Analysiert man jedoch natürliche Sprachen, dann bietet sich ein anderes, komplexeres Bild: Würde man der einfachen, klassischen Vorstellung folgen, dann käme man in der Sprache mit drei Tempora aus: Präsens, Präteritum, Futurum. Ein Blick in die Grammatiken verschiedener Sprachen zeigt aber, dass es auch andere Tempora neben die- sen dreien gibt, so im heutigen Deutsch das Plusquamperfekt und das Fu- turum exactum. Gewisse Tempora und auch temporale Ersatzformen lösen mehr oder minder glücklich das Problem, dass z.B. in einer Erzählung im Präteritum manchmal auch im zeitlichen Rückgriff eine Vergangenheit vor der Vergangenheit dargestellt werden muss, oder eine Zukunft in der Ver- gangenheit. Die Ursachen für eine nicht chronologische Darstellung sind vielfältig, z.B. stilistisch-textliche oder dass wir uns an Ereignisse nicht im- mer in der richtigen Reihenfolge erinnern. Weiters muss die Verwendung der Tempora in erzählenden Texten die Rekonstruktion des chronologischen Ablaufs von Ereignissen erlauben, z.B. aus praktischen Gründen. I attempted to do this by constructing a history that was itself a piece of analytic philosophy in its emphasis on analysis, reconstruction and criticism of arguments. In rebutting Hacker’s critique of it, I explain how my goal shaped my selection of topics, with special reference to the ordinary language period. I correct his misrepresentations of my treatment of the philosophers of this period, I demonstrate his failure to grasp, or understand the significance of, the Kripkean necessary a posteriori, and I reveal the misconceptions in his criticism of my interpretation of the ‘Tractatus’.
