Sidney Chalhoub The Politics of Ambiguity Conditional Manumission, Labor Contracts, and Slave Emancipation in Brazil (1850s–1888)* Introduction The historical process that made liberalism, old and new, the guiding ideology of Western societies brought with it the invention of new forms of unfree labor. Lib- eralism and free labor, ancien regime and serfdom and/or slavery are no longer unproblematic pairs of historical intelligibility. The first half of the nineteenth century did not see the weakening of slavery in the Americas at all, but just the partial relocation of it. The institution of slavery gradually disappeared in the British and French Caribbean while it became stronger in Brazil, Cuba, and the US South.1 In the second half of the nineteenth century, as the nightmare of an international order based on slavery was finally defeated in the American Civil War,2 there emerged extremely aggressive racist ideologies that justified Western imperial expansion and the persistence of forced labor in Africa and elsewhere. Actually, it boggles the mind to think that for so long it seemed possible to con- ceive of the nineteenth century as a time of transition from slavery to freedom, from bondage to contractual and/or free labor. The Historical Background to the Culture of Violence in Trinidad Tobago
1 The University of the West Indies Institute of Gender and Development Studies Issue 4 – 2010 The Historical Background to the Culture of Violence in Trinidad and Tobago Bridget Brereton ______________________________________________________________________________ Abstract This paper examines the historical background to the present-day culture of violence in Trinidad and Tobago, with reference to the period from pre-Columbian times to the mid- twentieth century. After noting the horrific violence associated with initial Spanish colonization and the decimation of the indigenes, the paper goes on to examine the nature of enslavement and its links to coercion and brutalization of the enslaved people. After the formal end of slavery, the paper considers the system of indentured immigration, which, though less violent than enslavement, was nevertheless a harsh system of forced labour. Aspects of the history of Trinidad in the period between the 1830s and the 1940s, as they helped to shape an often violent culture and society, are considered, especially those relating to domestic abuse and other forms of violence against women. Finally, the social evolution of Tobago is examined, to show that by and large, that island had not developed a culture of violence comparable to that of Trinidad, at least up to the mid- twentieth century. Key words: violence, slavery, indenture, Trinidad, Tobago 2 Introduction This article will analyse the historical evolution of a ―culture of violence‖ in Trinidad and Tobago, from the first contact between Europeans and Amerindians to episodes in the mid-twentieth century. Clearly, developments after 1962 in the post-Independence period—which this article does not examine—constitute a fundamental part of the reasons for the country’s current situation with respect to crime and violence. -

Beat out of blood with words sad-sung In strange un-Negro tongue So long So far away Is Africa -Langston Hughes, Free in a White Society INTRODUCTION When I started working in HISD’s Community Services my first assignment was working with inner city students that came to us straight from TYC (Texas Youth Commission). Many of these young secondary students had committed serious crimes, but at that time they were not treated as adults in the courts. Teaching these young students was a rewarding and enriching experience. You really had to be up close and personal with these students when dealing with emotional problems that would arise each day. Problems of anguish, sadness, low self-esteem, disappointment, loneliness, and of not being wanted or loved, were always present. The teacher had to administer to all of these needs, and in so doing got to know and understand the students. Each personality had to be addressed individually. Many of these students came from one parent homes, where the parent had to work and the student went unsupervised most of the time. In many instances, students were the victims of circumstances beyond their control, the problems of their homes and communities spilled over into academics. The teachers have to do all they can to advise and console, without getting involved to the extent that they lose their effectiveness. -

Survivor Stories The Sound of Freedom | Sakdouri Village Story It’s called the “brick belt” of India, a notorious region where debt bondage slavery is rampant and devastating. Enslaved villagers are threatened, degraded, shamed and sometimes beaten to death. It sounds like an impossible challenge for human rights activists. But it isn’t. The villagers of Sakdouri are proof. Slavery’s Cruel Grip Eighteen families from Sakdouri were trapped in bonded labor slavery at a local brick kiln, forced to work in brutal conditions, terrorized by violence. “Someone promised us jobs at the brick kiln and said the owner was a good person,” says Durga, a Sakdouri slavery survivor. “They said he would pay us well, but we didn’t even get water to drink. He didn’t pay us or even give us fuel to cook our food. When we asked the owner, he threatened and beat us.” “The brick kiln owner and his supervisor threatened to throw me in the brick kiln furnace,” says Shagir, a Sakdouri slavery survivor. In debt bondage, slaves are chained to an illegal financial obligation that they are forced to repay through endless labor. An entire family—men, women and children—is forced to work for the person who holds the debt. Those in slavery cannot walk away, even if they could pay off the loan more quickly by working elsewhere. Debt bondage has been outlawed in India, but impoverished villagers do not know their rights—and many have no choice but to borrow funds when a family emergency arises. A Daring Break for Freedom Brave Sakdouri slaves ultimately managed to make contact with residents of a previously freed village, who in turn notified a Free the Slaves front-line partner organization. -

Nomadic Technicians and Migration in the Francophone World Daniel M. Ringrose Minot State University In the decades before 1914 hundreds of skilled, working-class, French citizens left France to seek employment throughout the empire. Armed with diverse technical skills and a wealth of experience drawn from public and private construction in metropolitan France and elsewhere, hundreds of Frenchmen converged on Indochina in the early twentieth century to seek opportunity and to build an optimistic vision of imperial France in Asia. Abstract This thesis situates the emergence of German imperialist theory and praxis during the nineteenth century within the context of the ascendancy of German liberalism. It also contends that imperialism was an integral part of a liberal sense of German national identity. It is divided into an introduction, four parts and a set of conclusions. The introduction is a methodological and theoretical orientation. It offers an historiographical overview and places the thesis within the broader historiographical context. It also discusses the utility of post-colonial theory and various theories of nationalism and nation-building. Part One examines the emergence of expansionism within liberal circles prior to and during the period of 1848/ 49. It examines the consolidation of expansionist theory and political practice, particularly as exemplified in the Frankfurt National Assembly and the works of Friedrich List. Part Two examines the persistence of imperialist theorising and praxis in the post-revolutionary era. It scrutinises the role of liberal associations, civil society, the press and the private sector in maintaining expansionist energies up until the 1884 decision to establish state-protected colonies. Part Three focuses on the cultural transmission of imperialist values through the sciences, media and fiction.
