Department of Biological Sciences, Sokoto State University, P.M.B 2134, Sokoto State-Nigeria Correspondence email: [email protected] _____________________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT A survey of mycoflora associated with garlic cloves (Allium sativum L.) was conducted in five different markets site in Sokoto metropolis, Sokoto State. A total of 135 garlic (cloves) were collected, isolated and identified based on their morphological and cultural characteristics. Result shows that out of these 135 samp1es, six different types of fungal species were isolated and identified. These fungal species includes: Aspergillus niger, Absidia crymbefera, Mucor racemoses, Rhizopus stolonifer, A. flavus, and A. terrus. Among these fungal species, Aspergillus niger was found to have higher frequency of occurrence with 20(24.7%), Absidia crymberfera followed with 18 (22.2%), followed by Mucor racemoses having a frequency of 15 (18.5%), then Rhizopus stolon with 12 (14.8%) which is also followed by A. flavus and A. terrus having appearance of 9(11.1%) and 7(8.6%) respectively. Further research work should be carried out to be able to determine whether these fungi can be transmitted to seedling on the field. It has been used since ages in different civilizations and eras for therapy in diverse conditions. However, somewhere down the lane, its health benefits were forgotten with very few researchers doing studies on it and demonstrating its benefits in various disorders of the cardiovascular, respiratory, central, and peripheral nervous systems including dermatological and reproductive disorders. However, with a boom in the Nutraceutical industry in the past few decades, renewed interest has been generated in this age-old remedy with it becoming a very popular health supplement. This review focuses on the health benefits of this wonder food. It also emphasizes the need to find the right therapeutic dose at which it can be therapeutically beneficial and paves the way for future research. www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Complete chloroplast genomes shed light on phylogenetic relationships, divergence time, and biogeography of Allioideae (Amaryllidaceae) Ju Namgung1,4, Hoang Dang Khoa Do1,2,4, Changkyun Kim1, Hyeok Jae Choi3 & Joo‑Hwan Kim1* Allioideae includes economically important bulb crops such as garlic, onion, leeks, and some ornamental plants in Amaryllidaceae. Here, we reported the complete chloroplast genome (cpDNA) sequences of 17 species of Allioideae, fve of Amaryllidoideae, and one of Agapanthoideae. These cpDNA sequences represent 80 protein‑coding, 30 tRNA, and four rRNA genes, and range from 151,808 to 159,998 bp in length. Loss and pseudogenization of multiple genes (i.e., rps2, infA, and rpl22) appear to have occurred multiple times during the evolution of Alloideae. Additionally, eight mutation hotspots, including rps15-ycf1, rps16-trnQ-UUG, petG-trnW-CCA , psbA upstream, rpl32- trnL-UAG , ycf1, rpl22, matK, and ndhF, were identifed in the studied Allium species. Additionally, we present the frst phylogenomic analysis among the four tribes of Allioideae based on 74 cpDNA coding regions of 21 species of Allioideae, fve species of Amaryllidoideae, one species of Agapanthoideae, and fve species representing selected members of Asparagales. Our molecular phylogenomic results strongly support the monophyly of Allioideae, which is sister to Amaryllioideae. Within Allioideae, Tulbaghieae was sister to Gilliesieae‑Leucocoryneae whereas Allieae was sister to the clade of Tulbaghieae‑ Gilliesieae‑Leucocoryneae. Molecular dating analyses revealed the crown age of Allioideae in the Eocene (40.1 mya) followed by diferentiation of Allieae in the early Miocene (21.3 mya). The split of Gilliesieae from Leucocoryneae was estimated at 16.5 mya. -

The headspace composition changed rapidly due to the very reactive volatile sulfurous compounds emitted from onion tissue after cell disruption. Mass spectral signals corresponding to propanethial S-oxide (the lachrymatory factor) and breakdown products of this compound dominated 0–10 min after cutting. Subsequently, propanethiol and dipropyl disulfide predominantly appeared, together with traces of thiosulfinates. The concentrations of these compounds reached a maximum at 60 min after cutting. Propanethiol was present in highest concentrations and had an odor activity value 20 times higher than dipropyl disulfide. Thus, propanethiol is suggested to be the main source of the characteristic onion odor. -

Here it is provided the updated checklist of the alien vascular fora of Tuscany. Together with those taxa that are considered alien to the Tuscan vascular fora amounting to 510 units, also locally alien taxa and doubtfully aliens are reported in three additional checklists. The analysis of invasiveness shows that 241 taxa are casual, 219 naturalized and 50 invasive. Moreover, 13 taxa are new for the vascular fora of Tuscany, of which one is also new for the Euromediterranean area and two are new for the Mediterranean basin. Insieme alla lista dei taxa che si considerano alieni per la Toscana che ammontano a 510 unità, si segnalano in tre ulteriori liste anche i taxa che si ritengono essere presenti nell’area di studio anche con popolazioni non autoctone o per i quali sussistono dubbi sull’effettiva autoctonicità. L’analisi dello status di invasività mostra che 241 taxa sono casuali, 219 naturalizzati e 50 invasivi. Inoltre, 13 taxa rappresentano una novità per la fora vascolare di Toscana, dei quali uno è nuovo anche per l’area Euromediterranea e altri due sono nuovi per il bacino del Mediterraneo. Although, several drugs espe- cially metronidazole and tinidazole have been used in the treatment, their-resistant strains have been developed and unpleasant adverse effects exist. Garlic and other Allium species are old medicinal plants, which were used for infectious diseases, cardiovascular disorders and hair and skin cosmetic diseases. Objectives: We aimed to compare the anti-trichomoniasis activities of three species of Allium. Methods: The Trichomonas vaginalis strain was isolated from vaginal discharge of women with vaginitis symptoms and cultured in a modified TYM medium. After confirmation of herbarium of the plants, their extracts were prepared. For testing, 24 sterile plates were used. In all 24 homes, 200 µL of TYM were poured out.
