Modernity promotes the idea of a subject who is capable of self-regulation, self-surveillance, and self-control. Having supernatural experiences shows a lack of these capabilities. Nevertheless, we hear personal experience stories about people encountering beings such as angels, extraterrestrials, guardian spirits and ghosts. My work uses this contradiction as a starting point and asks how narrators attempt to organize their baffling experiences through narrative for themselves and others, how narrators attempt to normalize the supernatural, and how narrators recognize and combat the stigmas related to the supernatural? My work follows the narrative turn in social sciences and humanities, and applies the social constructionist approach to narrative and self. This research is interdisciplinary by its nature and draws its theoretical sources from folklore studies, cultural studies, narrative studies and social psychology. Applying the method of theme writing, I placed an inquiry in Finnish newspapers in late 2003 and early 2004 and got around 470 responses. I apply descriptive statistics to show the common traits of the research material, and I do a detailed narrative analysis on a subset of nine narratives. This study shows that the selection of narrative means that the narrators employ when talking about supernatural experiences is wide. They use comparisons, direct and ii embedded evaluations, overlays and detailed orientations; they call to witness, address the reader, use internal dialects to balance between the traditions of belief and disbelief; and their narrative voices fluctuate between close and distant. The narrators construct rational, yet emotional, and social, yet independent selves. They present themselves as valuing knowledge, yet understanding its limits. They show they are able to differentiate between the ordinary realm and the supernatural realm. They describe their social attachments and dependencies, but they also defend their unique experiences even if the experiences set them apart from others. Even though the supernatural is stigmatized, it is valuable when it makes the experiencer feel special, chosen, or gifted. Narrators’ attempts to normalize the supernatural are twofold. First, narrators negotiate and/or deny the stigmas related to the supernatural, and second, they express emotions. Narrators know that supernatural experiences may be explained as hallucinations, illusions or dreams resulting from intoxication, or mental disorders. They either deny these issues or explain that they do not account for the supernatural event. Second, the narrators offer an entry to their inner realm through emotion discourse. They describe a wide range of emotions, from fear to peace and joy. Through a multidisciplinary review of literature, the study enunciates how people create personal myths to make sense of their lives and why those invisible myths need to be continuously updated to account for life changes. The review of organizational research emphasizes the importance of choosing an archetype that supports a desired social identity at work. Following interviews with experienced coach practitioners, the study outlines a process by which coaches can ask for stories that not only help clients change but also lay the foundation of the deeper work clients need to do to articulate and realize their future vision.

    ELEMENTS OF CHINESE RELIGION Professor Russell Kirkland Department of Religion University of Georgia 1) CONFUCIANISM: A humanistic value-system based on the teachings of Confucius (Kongzi: 551- 479 BCE). It stresses the moral responsibilities of the individual as a member of society. Confucian ideals are to be attained in one's everyday life, through individual moral cultivation and the fulfillment of one's proper roles in society. Though the early thinkers Mencius (Mengzi) and Hsün-tzu (Xunzi) debated human nature, Confucians generally share a common assumption that human nature and/or society are ultimately perfectible. Though called "humanistic," Confucian ideals were originally grounded in a belief that humanity is perfectible because our higher qualities somehow come from "Heaven" (T'ien/Tian). Also, the Confucian tradition includes a liturgical tradition in which Confucius is venerated as a spiritual being. But most Confucian leaders since the 10th century have been humanistic intellectuals leery of any concept of a personalized higher reality. Influenced by Taoism and Buddhism, those "Neo-Confucians" developed sophisticated metaphysical theories as well as meditative practices. Westerners often overlook the Neo-Confucian pursuit of individual "sagehood." 2) TAOISM: Includes both a classical school of thought (fl. 4th-2nd centuries BCE) and an organized religion (fl. 2nd-12th centuries CE). Classical Taoism — represented by texts like the Nei-yeh (Neiye), Lao-tzu (Laozi), Chuang-tzu (Zhuangzi), and Huai-nan-tzu (Huainanzi) — stressed a return to natural harmony with life's basic realities; such harmony, they thought, typified humanity's original state. Later Taoism is rich and complex. It began as a sacerdotal, liturgical tradition centered upon the socio-political ideal of a world that functions in holistic harmony.

Storytelling has been a part of humanity since people were able to communicate and respond to the basic biological urge to explain, educate and enlighten. Cave drawings, traditional dances, poems, songs, and chants are all examples of early storytelling. Stories pass on historical, cultural, and moral information and provide escape and relief from the everyday struggle to survive. Storytelling takes place in all cultures in a variety of different forms. Studying these forms requires an interdisciplinary approach involving anthropology, psychology, linguistics, history, library science, theater, media studies and other related disciplines. New technologies and new approaches have brought about a renewed interest in the varied aspects and elements of storytelling, broadening our understanding and appreciation of its complexity. In the article, I discuss beliefs concerning both human and supernatural – what is supposed to be frightening for humans and what is supposed to be frightening for spirits, ghosts and demons. In daily interaction with the supernatural this mutual ‘fright’ can be regarded as an important part of communication. In this article, I discuss what is believed to be the most frightful for humans and for supernatural agents, what kinds of image this fear relates to and what the roots of these beliefs are, as well as the popular ways to confront and defend against ‘frightening’ in Mongolian folklore. My research is based on fieldwork materials collected during annual expedi- tions in different parts of Mongolia (2006–2017) and Mongolian published sources such as Mongolian newspapers and journals, special editions of stories about encounters with the supernatural. There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns.     Rethinking ‘Religious’ Cognition: The Eliadean Notion of the Sacred in the Light of the Legacy of Uno Harva1 VEIKKO ANTTONEN University of Turku Abstract The article discusses methodological similarities and differences be- tween Uno Harva and Mircea Eliade, with the objective of reassessing the value of their comparativist programs for the study of religion in general and of ‘religious’ cognition in particular. The Finnish scholar Uno Holmberg-Harva (1882–1949) was a predecessor to Eliade as a scholar of Asian and European religious history. During the first three decades of the twentieth century, when the academic study of religion was still maturing in Europe, Harva expanded considerably the field of the ethnological study of religion with his religio-phe- nomenological monographs Der Baum des Lebens (1922), Finno-Ugric, Siberian Mythology (1927) and Die Religiösen Vorstellungen der Altaischen Völker (1938). Harva was a towering figure in Finnish scholarship. Originally a Protestant theologian and Lutheran minister, he resigned from his ecclesiastical position to become a historian of religion, field ethnographer, ethnosociologist and folklorist under the tutelage of Edward Westermarck and Kaarle Krohn. Harva’s influence on the work of Eliade has been almost entirely ignored by historiographers of Religious Studies.
