Hornmilben (Acari, Oribatida) vom Fohramoos Nr. 18 - 2015 (Vorarlberg, Österreich) Heinrich Schatz1 1Dr. Heinrich Schatz Leopold-Franzens Universität Innsbruck, Institut für Zoologie Technikerstrasse 25, A-6020 Innsbruck [email protected] Abstract The Fohramoos, situated above Dornbirn at about 1140 m a.s.l., is a bog and wetland habitat complex with forest types and bogs in different successional stages, protected by the «Habitats Directive (92/43 EEC) on the Conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora». Oribatida were collected between July and October 2013 by taking soil and litter samples as well as by sieving organic material. Altogether 151 oribatid species belonging to 42 families were detected. A total of 50 species are new records for the fauna of Vorarlberg, among them are three new records for Austria. Some remarkable species are presented briefly. Beside ubiquists, the species assemblage is dominated by silvicolous and hygrophilous and tyrphobiont species. Addition­ ally, xerophilous and lichenicolous species are presented, demonstrating the mosaic pattern of microhabitats in the Fohramoos. A comparison of oribatid communities of eleven habitats in the Fohramoos resulted in high conformity of their species composi­ tion, especially between the forested sites. New data from known or recently investigated localities are presented and comparisons made with faunas from equivalent latitudes in Asia and Greenland. Many of the Canadian sites belong to the Beaufort Formation, a prime source of late Tertiary plant and insect fossils. But new sites are continually being discovered and studied and among the most informative of these are several from the high terrace gravel on Ellesmere Island. One Ellesmere Island locality, known informally as the “Beaver Peat” contains spectacularly well preserved plant and arthropod fossils, and is the only Pliocene site in Arctic North America to yield a variety of vertebrate fossils. Like some of the other “keystone” localities discussed here, it promises to be important for dating and correlation as well as for documenting high Arctic climatic and environmental conditions during the Pliocene.

Monson National Museums Liverpool Research Associate [email protected] Introduction: In the classic sense of the group, oribatid mites (also called beetle mites, armoured mites, or moss mites) comprise more than 9,000 named species (Schatz, 2002, 2005; Subías, 2004) representing 172 families. Although many are arboreal and a few are aquatic, most oribatid mites inhabit the soil- litter system. They are often the dominant arthropod group in highly organic soils of temperate forests, where 100–150 species may have collective densities exceeding 100,000m–2 (Norton & Behan- Pelletier, 2009). A useful introduction to British oribatid taxonomy and history in general can be found in Monson (2011). Unless otherwise stated, the superfamily and family organisation are in accordance with Schatz et al (2011) and lower level taxonomy is in accordance with Weigmann (2006). Each species is followed by a list of sites indicating where it was found etc. in its respective vice county. All identifications are by the Author unless otherwise stated. Two sites listed had a previous history of published records namely Delamere Forest and Wybunbury Moss (both in Cheshire) prior to the recent collections of Monson (Delamere Forest) and National Museums Liverpool (NML) (Wybunbury Moss) which are listed below. The prime aim of this new checklist (though limited to three vice counties namely VC58, VC59 and VC60) is to provide a useful tool for those who follow in the pursuit and fascinating study of oribatid mites in Lancashire and Cheshire and elsewhere. INTRODUCTION Among the works of acarologists of the past, Berlese's numerous writings take a particular place. Although they contain descriptions of an enormous number of new species, and notwithstanding the fact that they must be regarded as an important contribution to progress of systematics, the way of publishing is superficial to such a degree that Berlese appears to be the author that created the largest number of problems. As a rule his Latin descriptions are extremely short and consist of a few lines only. When exceptionally a figure is given, it represents at most some elementary characters. It even happens that reference is made to a species of which the diagnosis has never been published, whilst on the contrary it also occurs that a species is men- tioned two times as new to science. Considering at the same time that it is difficult to recover the dates of publication of many papers, it is clear that reinvestigations are badly needed. Several authors published excellent descriptions of some of Berlese's species, but a review of a group has never been given. Besides, a complete catalogue of the records 1) and a definite bibliography are both still wanting. Because studies of the type-species of genera, and monographs of some groups of primitive Oribatid mites are in course of preparation, a revision of Berlese's material appeared to be inevitable.
