    A Discography of the Choral Symphony by J. F. Weber In previous issues of this Journal (XV:2-3; XVI:l-2), an effort was made to compile parts of a composer discography in depth rather than breadth. This one started in a similar vein with the realization that SO CDs of the Beethoven Ninth Symphony had been released (the total is now over 701). This should have been no surprise, for writers have stated that the playing time of the CD was designed to accommodate this work. After eighteen months' effort, a reasonably complete discography of the work has emerged. The wonder is that it took so long to collect a body of information (especially the full names of the vocalists) that had already been published in various places at various times. The Japanese discographers had made a good start, and some of their data would have been difficult to find otherwise, but quite a few corrections and additions have been made and some recording dates have been obtained that seem to have remained 1.Dlpublished so far. The first point to notice is that six versions of the Ninth didn't appear on the expected single CD. Bl:lhm (118) and Solti (96) exceeded the 75 minutes generally assumed (until recently) to be the maximum CD playing time, but Walter (37), Kegel (126), Mehta (127), and Thomas (130) were not so burdened and have been reissued on single CDs since the first CD release. On the other hand, the rather short Leibowitz (76), Toscanini (11), and Busch (25) versions have recently been issued with fillers.

    Chapter 6 The Closing of the Kroll: Weimar Culture and the Depression The last chapter discussed the Kroll Opera's success, particularly in the 1930-31 season, in fulfilling its mission as a Volksoper. While the opera was consolidating its aesthetic identity, a dire economic situation dictated the closing of opera houses and theaters all over Germany. The perennial question of whether Berlin could afford to maintain three opera houses on a regular basis was again in the air. The Kroll fell victim to the state's desire to save money. While the closing was not a logical choice, it did have economic grounds. This chapter will explore the circumstances of the opera's demise and challenge the myth that it was a victim of the political right. The last chapter pointed out that the response of right-wing critics to the Kroll was multifaceted. Accusations of "cultural Bolshevism" often alternated with serious appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of any given production. The right took issue with the Kroll's claim to represent the nation - hence, when the opera tackled works by Wagner and Beethoven, these efforts were more harshly criticized because they were perceived as irreverent. The scorn of the right for the Kroll's efforts was far less evident when it did not attempt to tackle works crucial to the German cultural heritage. Nonetheless, political opposition did exist, and it was sometimes expressed in extremely crude forms. The 1930 "Funeral Song of the Berlin Kroll Opera", printed in the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, may serve as a case in point.

    A Culture of Recording: Christopher Raeburn and the Decca Record Company Sally Elizabeth Drew A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Sheffield Faculty of Arts and Humanities Department of Music This work was supported by the Arts & Humanities Research Council September 2018 1 2 Abstract This thesis examines the working culture of the Decca Record Company, and how group interaction and individual agency have made an impact on the production of music recordings. Founded in London in 1929, Decca built a global reputation as a pioneer of sound recording with access to the world’s leading musicians. With its roots in manufacturing and experimental wartime engineering, the company developed a peerless classical music catalogue that showcased technological innovation alongside artistic accomplishment. This investigation focuses specifically on the contribution of the recording producer at Decca in creating this legacy, as can be illustrated by the career of Christopher Raeburn, the company’s most prolific producer and specialist in opera and vocal repertoire. It is the first study to examine Raeburn’s archive, and is supported with unpublished memoirs, private papers and recorded interviews with colleagues, collaborators and artists. Using these sources, the thesis considers the history and functions of the staff producer within Decca’s wider operational structure in parallel with the personal aspirations of the individual in exerting control, choice and authority on the process and product of recording. Having been recruited to Decca by John Culshaw in 1957, Raeburn’s fifty-year career spanned seminal moments of the company’s artistic and commercial lifecycle: from assisting in exploiting the dramatic potential of stereo technology in Culshaw’s Ring during the 1960s to his serving as audio producer for the 1990 The Three Tenors Concert international phenomenon.

    Renate Behle »She can produce every Wagnerian effect from dulcet velvety tones to clarion outbursts of passion« (Daily News) Renate Behle, « chanteuse wagnérienne jubilatoire » (Die Welt), soprano dramatique de classe internationale, a marqué pendant de nombreuses années les scènes d’opéra du monde entier avec ses incarnations wagnériennes et straussiennes. Depuis 2007 elle se produit internationalement comme mezzo-soprano dramatique, - « cas unique d’une héroïne wagnérienne avec intelligence et cœur » (Kölner Stadtanzeiger). Renate Behle a compté pendant plus de 15 ans parmi les plus renommées des chanteuses dramatiques. Avec « sa voix chaude et généreuse », dont la sonorité « se grave dans la mémoire » (Financial Times), elle a su enthousiasmer le public et la presse sur les plus grandes scènes d’opéra du monde. Au cours de sa carrière longue de plus de quatre décennies, Renate Behle a su prouver qu’elle possédait une voix d’une exceptionnelle polyvalence.     Lifestyle Academia 2016 Opera workshops for children and young adults | 28th Academia is on the horizon Once again this year, the organisers of Academia Vocalis have managed to bring international stars to Wörgl. And they're expecting another successful project. A new children's opera, by children and for children and young adults, in which the pranks of Max and Moritz are developed into a new production in the style of Wil- helm Busch, will be presented to the public in a professional performance in September 2016. Under the overall coordination of Maria Knoll-Madersbacher, the stars of tomorrow have the opportunity to demonstrate their talent in the new children's opera "Max & Moritz in Wörgl", in performances in Wörgl and Erl from September 9th to 18th, 2016. This new project comes after the sensational success of the 2008/2009 opera version of "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. The libretto for the new Max & Moritz opera has al- ready been written (Walter Hohenauer, Wörgl). The composition will be done by young Wörgl talent Christian Spitzenstätter. Rehearsals started at the last JUKI opera workshop and will continue – after a casting in Octo- ber 2016 – throughout the entire year. Experienced professionals work with the children under the direction of Maria Knoll-Madersbacher. The premiere will take place on September 9th, 2016, in an evening performance at VZ Komma in Wörgl, and culminate in two performances in the Erl festival hall. Stars of yesterday and today Academia promises a lot. From July 29th to August 5th, 2016, Univ. Prof. Karlheinz Hanser will once again be holding the master course "The voice as an instrument".
