ABSTRACT The main focus of this study is to examine the modernization of the Ottoman navy during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz, exploring naval administration, education, and technology. Giving a summary of the transformation of shipbuilding technologies and bureaucratic institutions of the Ottoman naval forces between 1808 and 1861, it analyses the structure of the Ottoman navy, its level of development in comparison to previous periods of time, and the condition of the vessels making up the naval fleet from 1861 to 1876. It also intends to evaluate the character of existing administrative structures at the outset of Abdülaziz’s reign in 1861 and the nature of subsequent changes, including structural reorganization of the Imperial Naval Arsenal, the Ministry of Marine, and the Naval Academy, as well as advancements in military training and seafaring; all within the context of the impact of these changes on the military, political, and economic condition of the Empire during the reign of Sultan Abdülaziz.

Whether created by transforming historic buildings, whether contemporary and new design products, museums play a key role in terms of the image and attractiveness of the city they are located in. This study investigates the relation that the museums in Istanbul have established with the city in the context of image. The method employed is to first introduce the theoretical context of the subject based on literature review; to analyze the selected museums in terms of the city-museum interaction and to evaluate the selected museums within the context of the contributions they make to the image of Istanbul by descriptive methodology. As a result, the contribution of the museums on the city and the contribution of the city on the museums have been demonstrated and the varying and symbiotic nature of this relationship has been emphasized. Istanbul is a fascinating case to grasp that taking place of cultural industries in an urban structure in terms of transformation of the city in line with the trends of globalization. This thesis primarily presents that newly emerged cultural topography of Istanbul by mapping cultural industries. Following the narrow conceptualization of cultural industries, that refers to institutions which exhibit, circulate capitals based on arts, culture, and knowledge, residing of seven different categories of cultural industries in Istanbul are mapped by their geo-referenced data. Museums, universities, cultural centers, art galleries, convention and exhibition centers, festival and concert halls, and bookstores are mapped one by one as well as all. The results show that existing city center is culturally reified by cultural industries. Moreover, the triangular shape of culturally reified city center, Istanbul’s triangle, is revealed by intersection of intensification of cultural industries and the route of tramline, which has a positive correlation with the route of intensification of cultural industries.

The article rethinks contemporary discussions and the materialized works in Turkey with reference to the wider international frame of the architectural context. Formalized around the concept of ‘situated modernism’ and the publicness of architecture, the example of the Complex of Retail Shops is examined. This subject is questioned with particular focus on the ambivalence between the international and the local in postwar architecture, and the efforts to establish a connection with the public. The novel perspective that the article suggests is a re-reading of the complex together with the questioning process of the international modern and the uneven relationship between the arts and architecture. The article aims to unearth the implicit meaning and the constructive role of this uneven relationship, specially the collaboration efforts, under the circumstances of the period. Cultural tourism constitutes an important part of tourism in relation to a country or region‟s culture, especially the history of those people, their art, other values and the lifestyle of the human in those geographical areas. Transport Museums remain one of the most important items in cultural tourism and are very important in terms of reflecting Republic values in Turkey. In the first years of Turkish Republic, there were not improved transportations systems, so railways were important because of changing the city landscape and the lifestyle of people, and the economy of Turkey. After 1950, Road and air transport system of Turkey was improved. In time, all of them became part of the Turkish culture and some of them started displaying in museums. Today, there are over 20 museums in relation to transport in Turkey. In this study, we will try to explain this form of museum is becoming generally more popular throughout the world and intend to reveal the tourism potential of transport museums in Turkey.
