Species from Mediterranean forests have resistance and resilience mechanisms to cope with drought and differences in these ecological strategies will profoundly influence vegetation composition in response to drought. Our aim was to contrast the early response of two co-occurring forest species, Eucalyptus marginata and Corymbia calophylla, in the Northern Jarrah Forest of southwestern Australia, following a sudden and severe drought event. Forest plots were monitored for health and response, three and 16 months following the drought. Eucalyptus marginata was more susceptible to partial and complete crown dieback compared to C. calophylla, three months after the drought. However, resprouting among trees exhibiting complete crown dieback was similar between species. -

Bunbury Outer Ring Road Southern Section Vegetation and Flora Study September 2019 Executive Summary The Commissioner of Main Roads Western Australia (Main Roads) is planning for the construction of the Bunbury Outer Ring Road (BORR) Project. BORR is a planned Controlled Access Highway linking the Forrest Highway and Bussell Highway. The completed BORR will provide a high standard route for access to the Bunbury Port and facilitate proposed development to the east of the City of Bunbury. BORR will also provide an effective bypass of Bunbury for inter-regional traffic. BORR forms a major component of the planned regional road network for the Greater Bunbury area. The land requirement for BORR is identified in the Greater Bunbury Region Scheme (GBRS). The proposed BORR comprises three sections: ‘BORR Northern Section’ – Forrest Highway to Boyanup-Picton Road ‘BORR Central Section’ – The Central Section has been previously constructed however further improvements are proposed for this section, including the extension of Willinge Drive southwards to South Western Highway ‘BORR Southern Section’ – South Western Highway (near Bunbury Airport) to Bussell Highway. -

Threats to Biodiversity Common Weeds Weeds have been categorised to reflect factors such as invasiveness, potential to spread, ‘perceived’ and ‘actual’ impacts and their environmental, economic and social impact. Some of the more common and emerging pest plants known from the Adelaide Hills Council district fall into one or more of the below categories. WEED CATEGOREY CODE DETAILS Weeds of National Significance WoNS Australia’s most invasive, high impact pest plants. There are national programs and strategies for each of the WoNS. Declared Weeds D These are supported by legislation (Natural Resources Management Act 2004) as they are those that present a significant threat to agriculture, the environment and public health and safety. Landowners have a legal responsibility to manage these plants. Alert Weeds A Declared plants not yet established in South Australia and pose a serious threat. Landowners must report alert weeds found on their property as early detection is important so the plant can be eradicated before it spreads and becomes a more serious problem. With early and appropriate management, Alert List weeds can be successfully contained or eradicated. See Relevant Contacts below. Priority Environmental Weeds E Invasive exotics which are not restricted to WoNS or Declared plants, but are currently considered a local problem or have the potential to become a problem within the District. Many of these are ornamental garden plants which have escaped into the bushland, actively dispersed by wind and water, birds and feral animals such as foxes. Present in Australia and naturalised on Norfolk, Lord Howe and the Chatham Islands HABITAT Coastal to lowland. Often in pastures where it can be as major weed. Usually in damp swampy hollows, on the margins of wetlands and lakes, in open shrubland on damp ground, or near saltmarshes in places that can be flooded by King tides. Rhizome 5-10 mm diameter, horizontal. Flowering stems 1-2 m tall, 3-8 mm diameter, erect, very rarely drooping, smooth, slightly glossy, light green or glaucous, soft, pith continuous; leaves absent; basal sheathing bracts numerous, lower ones shorter, upper ones larger, loosely sheathing, very obtuse with a long, hair-like mucro, light green, light brown or pinkish brown, Inflorescence apparently lateral, many-flowered, usually contracted into a dense head > 15 mm wide, or effuse with long stout, rigid branchlets. Flowers 2.3-3.0 mm long, clustered at branchlet apices, or evenly spaced along branchlets, on stout pedicels or almost sessile; tepals pale green, occasionally tinged with pink, maturing light brown, the outer rigid, the inner soft and membranous, almost colourless. -

My earliest childhood memories were been stung by jellyfish everytime I swam in the ocean and just how cold the Atlantic Ocean was. Whilst at the University of Cape Town, I worked as a ranger at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. The reserve, now part of a larger national park was bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Indian Ocean to the east which resulted in a very diverse marine environment. I had the privilege of monitoring the Black Oystercatcher population within a 7 km sanctuary zone and have fond memories of been the only person, apart from the baboons on the beach every day. In later years, I worked for a provincial conservation organisation in KwaZulu- Natal, much like DBCA and was responsible, amongst other duties, for the overall management of the many marine reserves. -
