Temples Long ago, the Greeks had no shrines or sanctuaries for public worship. They performed their devotions beneath the vast and boundless canopy of heaven, in the great temple of nature itself. Believing that their gods lived above in the clouds, worshippers naturally searched for the highest available points to place themselves in the closest communion possible with their gods. Therefore, the summits of high mountains were selected for devotional purposes. The inconvenience of worshipping outdoors gradually suggested the idea of building temples that would offer shelter from bad weather. These first temples were of the most simple form, without decoration. As the Greeks became a wealthy and powerful people, temples were built and adorned with great splendor and magnificence. The city of Athens especially contains numerous remains of these buildings of antiquity. These ruins are most valuable since they are sufficiently complete to enable archaeologists to study the plan and character of the original structures. -

BESLEY University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Introduction Since the days of the Ancient Greeks citizens, city fathers and philosophers have acknowledged the category ‘youth’ as a distinctive life stage and have vitally concerned themselves with the moral constitution of youth. They have argued over their wellbeing and their education and how best to mould as responsible citizens. Youth has been considered a ‘dangerous age’ and transition to adult and citizen; education has been identified with a range of different ways of enhancing or inflaming youth the passions of youth. Depending on ideology and philosophical viewpoint, education has been conceived as a means to incite or prevent revolution, violence and terrorism. Education may in fact be considered a form of indoctrination or political socialization especially when particular regimes set out to politicize notions of culture, religion and national identity. Moreover, teachers can be considered to have considerable impact on student attitudes and actions as the famous case of corruption against Socrates in Ancient Greece. Today both the US and Islamic countries hold teachers to account for providing appropriate moral training. And governments around the world routinely impose performance-related pay regimes based on the assumption of a relationship between teaching and learning. Regardless, teaching is a social activity and depending on many factors including the degree of relationship between teacher and student, the teacher’s charisma, intelligence, knowledge and powers of persuasion, and other influences on a young person (e.g. family, politics, religion) teaching can have either a profound or a limited effect. -

ANDRÁS PATAY-HORVÁTH The Contest between Athena and Poseidon. Myth, History and Art The myth was a well-known one in antiquity, and it is well-known even to- day. There are many versions in various extant literary sources1 and even some depictions in sculpture, vase painting and minor arts2. Surprisingly enough, the famous myth has not attracted much scholarly interest3. The modern commen- taries simply list the relevant passages, but hardly attempt a thorough comparative analysis4. The present paper (an updated, revised and abbreviated version of Patay-Horváth 2002a) would like to present a study, suggesting strong intercon- nections between Athenian history and the evolution of the myth. Beside the many familiar texts and works of art, I will also introduce a new piece of evidence, which has never been considered in this context and hope that it will become ap- parent, that the role of Poseidon and the sea is much more important in this myth than has generally been acknowledged. It is appropriate to begin with a fairly detailed version of the myth from the mythological textbook of Apollodorus (Bibl. III 14). It can serve as a very practi- cal introduction to the subject because it contains not only one version but some alternatives as well. Cecrops, a son of the soil, with a body compounded of man and serpent, was the first king of Attica, and the country which was formerly called Acte he named Cecropia after himself. Notes on 2 Peter 202 1 Edition Dr. Thomas L. Constable HISTORICAL BACKGROUND This epistle claims that the Apostle Peter wrote it (1:1). It also claims to follow a former letter written by Peter (3:1), which appears to be a reference to 1 Peter, although Peter may have been referring to a letter we no longer have.1 The author's reference to the fact that Jesus had predicted a certain kind of death for him (1:14) ties in with Jesus' statement to Peter recorded in John 21:18. Even so, "most modern scholars do not think that the apostle Peter wrote this letter."2 The earliest external testimony (outside Scripture) to Petrine authorship comes from the third century.3 The writings of the church fathers contain fewer references to the Petrine authorship of 2 Peter than to the authorship of any other New Testament book. It is easy to see why critics who look for reasons to reject the authority of Scripture have targeted this book for attack. Ironically, in this letter, Peter warned his readers of heretics who would depart from the teachings of the apostles and the Old Testament prophets, which became the very thing some of these modern critics do. Not all who reject Petrine authorship are heretics, however. The arguments of some critics have convinced some otherwise conservative scholars who no longer retain belief in the epistle's inspiration. Archaic Eretria
ARCHAIC ERETRIA This book presents for the first time a history of Eretria during the Archaic Era, the city’s most notable period of political importance. Keith Walker examines all the major elements of the city’s success. One of the key factors explored is Eretria’s role as a pioneer coloniser in both the Levant and the West— its early Aegean ‘island empire’ anticipates that of Athens by more than a century, and Eretrian shipping and trade was similarly widespread. We are shown how the strength of the navy conferred thalassocratic status on the city between 506 and 490 BC, and that the importance of its rowers (Eretria means ‘the rowing city’) probably explains the appearance of its democratic constitution. Walker dates this to the last decade of the sixth century; given the presence of Athenian political exiles there, this may well have provided a model for the later reforms of Kleisthenes in Athens. Eretria’s major, indeed dominant, role in the events of central Greece in the last half of the sixth century, and in the events of the Ionian Revolt to 490, is clearly demonstrated, and the tyranny of Diagoras (c. 538–509), perhaps the golden age of the city, is fully examined. Full documentation of literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources (most of which have previously been inaccessible to an English-speaking audience) is provided, creating a fascinating history and a valuable resource for the Greek historian.
