Elmo has raised his sunfl ower, Sunny, from a seed, but the fl oral friend has outgrown his fl ower pot. Elmo and friends fi nd Big Bird’s garden the ideal place for Sunny to fl ourish and grow but they are too excited to wait. Rather than let Sunny follow nature’s course, Abby Cadabby, Sesame Street’s fairy-in-training, casts a spell to make him grow. The spell does just the opposite and, instead of growing, Elmo and all of his friends shrink! While Abby searches for just the right words to reverse the spell, Elmo, Zoe, Tell and friends explore Big Bird’s garden from a smaller perspective and learn some big lessons about patience, overcoming their fears and appreciating the role that each creature plays in our ecosystem - from dancing ladybugs and beautiful butterfl ies to grouchy beetles that scavenge the garden fl oor. It’s a fresh, original Sesame Street Live show on a whole new scale! 3 KWBU PROGRAM GUIDE TV is Becoming DTV Are you ready? The television industry is approaching a historic moment; on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, the nation’s TV broadcasters will complete their transition to an all-digital format. Digital television (DTV) is a newer, more effi cient, broadcast technology that offers viewers dramatically clearer pictures and better sound than the traditional analog system.

This change will affect millions of households that only receive over-the-air signals, as well as those that have secondary over-the-air TV sets in their bedrooms and/or kitchens.

Viewers who do not subscribe to a paid cable or satellite service and do not have a digital tuner inside their television will need to take one of the three steps outlined below to continue watching TV after the transition.

1. Purchase a TV set with a built-in digital tuner Questions? email: [email protected] 2. Subscribe to cable, satellite or other pay TV service call: 254/710-HDTV (4388) 3. Purchase a DTV converter box for your existing TV set

Digital-to-analog converter boxes receive digital over-the-air signals from your antenna, convert them to analog and then send the signals to your existing analog television set. Through March 31, 2009, all U.S. households are eligible to request up to two $40 government-sponsored coupons to off-set the price of the boxes, allowing viewers to continue watching free over-the-air television on their older analog sets.

KWBU’s Switch to Digital KWBU, public broadcasting for Central Texas, licensed to Waco, will cease analog signal transmission on February 17, 2009. In the event that the DTV transition deadline is extended, KWBU will cease analog signal transmission on February 20, 2009. You can continue to receive KWBU via cable, satellite or over- the-air through a digital converter box. Converter boxes are available locally at Wal-Mart, Radio Shack, HEB, Sears or Best Buy.

If you would like to register comments or request more information about KWBU’s analog shut-off, please choose one of the following: Email: [email protected] Phone: 254/710-HDTV (4388) Mail: One Bear Place #97296 Waco, TX 76798-7296 Offi ce: 2100 River Street

Masterpiece: Oliver Twist Sundays, February 15 & 22 at 8:00 p.m.

The world’s most famous orphan comes to MASTERPIECE CLASSIC in a rousing new retelling of Charles Dickens’ much loved story of daring pickpockets, diabolical villains, and amazing adventures on Oliver Twist, airing in two parts on Sundays, February 15 and 22, 2009 at 8pm on KWBU-TV. The program is the fi rst of four sparkling Dickens adaptations in MASTERPIECE CLASSIC’s “The Tales of Charles Dickens,” to be followed by David Copperfi eld (an encore presentation starring Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe in his debut fi lm role, in March), Andrew Davies’ Little Dorrit (March 29 through April 26), and The Old Curiosity Shop starring Sir Derek Jacobi (May 3). With a modern edge that sets it apart from previous adaptations (a “bold, modern, sleek, dramatic exaggeration” raved the Guardian), Oliver Twist’s spectacular cast is led by newcomer William Miller as Oliver—orphaned in the countryside, sent to the workhouse, sold into servitude after his immortal appeal, “Please, sir, I want some more,” apprenticed to a sadistic coffi n maker, and then driven to fl ee for his life to the only safe haven he can imagine: the den of delinquents, prostitutes, and murderers known as London.

13 KWBU PROGRAM GUIDE KWBU-FM Highlights

KWBU PROGRAM GUIDE 14 KWBU-FM KWBU-FM Black History Month Programming LADY WRITES THE : THE ROSE MARIE MCCOY STORY Born in 1922, Rose Marie McCoy grew up in a tin shack in rural . By the 1960s, she had become one of the most prolifi c of her generation. McCoy's songs have been recorded by , , Dizzy Gillespie, Ike & , , , , , Sarah Vaughn, Johnny Mathis and . Her success was even more remarkable since she worked in an era when blacks and women were largely excluded from the business side of the music industry. But despite publishing over 850 songs, McCoy remains largely unknown. Hosted by singer- Maxine Brown, "Lady Writes the Blues: The Rose Marie McCoy Story" shines a long overdue spotlight on McCoy, who wrote her fi rst song, "After All," in 1942. After 10 years as a struggling singer in New York City, she partnered with renowned songwriter Charlie Singleton. The duo was so prolifi c, it is said that throughout the , almost every station would be playing a Singleon-McCoy tune. "Lady Writes the Blues" features interviews with such iconic performers as Aretha Franklin, and McCoy herself, along with insights from the host. The hour-long special includes previously unreleased songs and a rare recording of McCoy performing in her fi nal concert at the age of 86. Airs February 7 at 9:00 p.m. and February 20 at 8:00 p.m. on 103.3 KWBU- FM. MY SONG, MY STORY: KOOL & THE GANG Kool & the Gang has sold over 70 million albums worldwide and infl uenced the music of three generations. Thanks to songs like "Celebration," "Cherish," "Jungle Boogie," "Summer Madness" and "Open Sesame," they've earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top-10 R&B hits, nine Top-10 Pop hits, and 31 gold and platinum albums. Kool & the Gang has performed continuously for the past 35 years, longer than any R&B group in history. Their bulletproof and tough, jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled band of all time. "My Song, My Story" offers an in-depth profi le of the band's beginnings and its evolution over its highly successful three- and-a-half decades. It also reveals how even today, the band continues to tour and connect with new and old fans. "My Song, My Story" includes interviews with the artists, their colleagues and family members, and features archival tape and music. Airs February 8 at 9:00 p.m. and February 20 at 9:00 p.m. on 103.3 KWBU-FM. 'WOMEN OF THE RENAISSANCE' Broadway's joins The Jim Cullum Jazz Band on "Riverwalk Jazz" to celebrate a largely unsung group of black women whose artistry was pivotal to the Harlem Renaissance. Scholar and co-founder of the NAACP W.E.B. Du Bois argued that education, art and culture could be powerful weapons for social change. He launched "The Crisis," a magazine that played a major role in the Black Renaissance of the 1920s, giving voice to such young writers as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston. But it was the dedicated Jessie Fauset, working in DuBois' shadow, who managed "The Crisis" and shaped its literary style. She is remembered today not only as a poet and novelist, but also as the Midwife of the Harlem Renaissance. "Women of the Harlem Renaissance" spotlights the lives and artistry of women like Fauset who shaped and nurtured black culture in Jazz Age Harlem. Airs February 20 at 7:00 p.m. on 103.3 KWBU-FM.
