Château Lagrange Welcome to our comprehensive Fine Wine Catalogue! As imported wine first started to flow into New Zealand in the early 80’s, Glengarry led the way. We pioneered Bordeaux En Primeur here with the stunning 1982 Vintage, and have been blazing that trail ever since. In the process we’ve accumulated a wealth of experience and understanding as to what, and what not, to do. All of our wines are shipped by our well-established distribution lines in secure, temperature controlled containers to ensure they arrive in the best condition. Over the years we have put in the hard-yards to search out the greatest fine wines from all corners of the world. We continue to be New Zealand’s leading importer of Bordeaux, and have the greatest collection of Champagne in the country. We are delighted to be able to welcome you to this extensive collection, all neatly catalogued in this comprehensive Glengarry Fine Wine Catalogue. As stocks come and go regularly, an updated edition of the Catalogue is available from our website. The date of update indicated on the bottom of the page. I know you’ll enjoy perusing the pages of this Fine Wine Catalogue and look forward to seeing you at one of our Fine Wine Tastings soon. Regards, Liz Wheadon General Manager GLENGARRY FINE WINE TEAM France Alsace Gisselbrecht Alsatian Pinot Gris is an entirely different breed to the New Zealand versions of this intriguing, pink-skinned variety. While some of our local offerings can perhaps hint at the delights on offer from Alsace, it is producers like Gisselbrecht who know how to deliver the complexity and astounding richness that the grape is capable of. They have a bit of an advantage, their family having made wine in Alsace since the 1600’s. Indeed, they know their 17 hectares intimately. Great Alsatian aromatic wines like the ones produced by Gisselbrecht tend to be thickly textured expressions of their respective grape varieties, a thrilling collision of honeyed richness and flinty minerality, the result of a unique terroir and an attention to detail that only centuries of tradition can deliver. PLU Brand Name Vintage Retail 47013 GISSELBRECHT GEWURZ VENDAGES TARDIVES 2008 $74.99 Vendange Tardive means late harvest, so we’re talking about serious concentration and intensity of flavours, with said wines some of Alsace’s most glorious. This sumptuous Gewürztraminer exudes a hedonistic, almost explosive bouquet of honeyed exotica (guava, lychee, candied fruit), riding a palate that’s wonderfully lush and silky. Superb. 47024 GISSELBRECHT GRAND CRU FRANKSTEIN PINOT GRIS 2013 $43.99 This is Grand Cru, off the famed Frankstein vineyard. It’s a supremely rich and elegant wine with a smoky, exotic character and spicy, honeyed, floral-tinged flavours. Superb drinking. Founded in 1854 by Aloyse Meyer, Josmeyer is the jewel in our Alsatian range, biodynamic producers operating at the highest level, producing dazzling aromatic wines with a purity others can only aspire to. Five generations in, the Josmeyer Domaine covers an area of 25 hectares, of which five are on the slopes of the A.O.C. Grand Cru Brand and Hengst vineyards.Their superb, entry-level Pinot Gris sets the benchmark, its deliciously textured peach and honey characters travelling an endless and seamless arc across your tastebuds. And if you’re feeling flush, the Grand Crus are simply off the planet. PLU Brand Name Vintage Retail 46510 JOSMEYER GEWURZTRAMINER GRAND CRU HENGST 2010 $89.00 92/100 | Stephen Tanzer 46508 JOSMEYER GRAND CRU BRAND RIESLING 2015 $89.00 46514 JOSMEYER GRAND CRU HENGST GEWÜRZTRAMINER 2008 $99.00 90/100 | Robert Parker: "Harboring nearly as much residual sugar as the corresponding Archenets, but packing 14.5% alcohol, the Josmeyer 2008 Gewurztraminer Hengst nevertheless retains a critical measure of primary juiciness. Pink grapefruit, orange rind, rose petal, caraway, and cinnamon pungently scent the nose and – along with quince jelly – unctuously envelope the palate. Crystallized ginger and candied citrus rind, enhance the sense of pungency in the sweet yet still subtly refreshing finish. This should be worth following for 15-20 years." - David Schildknecht 46531 JOSMEYER LE FROMENTEAU PINOT GRIS 2011 $56.00 88/100 | Stephen Tanzer: "Musky aromas of quinine, mint and earth. Fairly dense on the palate, with a rather laid-back quality to the lemon and smoke flavors. A bit sweet and rich for a Josmeyer pinot gris, in need of some more definition." 46505 JOSMEYER LES PIERRETS RIESLING 2014 $59.00 Warm and aromatic hints of ripe Bosc pear pervade the aromatics of this wine. The palate has a rounded, ripe feel but remains beautifully slender, expressing more of that pear fruit now highlighted by citrus freshness. It's a very balanced, dry wine with a clean finish. 46530 JOSMEYER PINOT GRIS HENGST 2007 $102.00 16/20 | Jancis Robinson: "A balancing act of acidity and sweetness with notes of orange peel, stone fruit, apricot, honey and botrytis." 46529 JOSMEYER PINOT GRIS HENGST 2010 $89.00 46511 JOSMEYER RIESLING GRAND CRU HENGST 2015 $89.00 A somewhat dry style ( just a hint of residual sugar ) yet very exotic and fragrant, showing rose, apricot, smoke and mineral aromas and flavors on an open, rich and broad - shouldered structure. Fine concentration and length. No slouches themselves, Louis and his son Auguste expanded the business between Wars I and II, digging deep cellars and establishing a new processing plant. After the cessation of hostilities, the cellars were expanded and further vineyard parcels were acquired, making it the largest winegrowing Domain in Ribeauvillé. Today the Domaine is managed by Louis’ great grandson Etienne, who has converted the operation to organic production. The company combines traditional methods with modern equipment, the grapes all hand harvested and the wines produced from local wild yeasts. The resulting expressions display great finesse and a true affinity for their Ribeauvillé terroir. Domaine Laroche, Chablis `St Martin` 2015 PRODUCER Domaine Laroche epitomises Chablis, with impeccable quality and a remarkable 100 hectares of vineyards, including 30 hectares of Premier and six hectares of Grand Crus. Founded in 1850, there is still a dynamism which permeates everything they do. Michel Laroche merged with another family-owned producer, Jeanjean, in 2009 and he remains involved in the business, along with his wife Gwénaël. As part of their aim to retain purity and minerality in the finished wine, Laroche was the first Burgundian producer to move to screwcaps in 2002. VINEYARDS Saint Martin refers to the patron saint of Chablis, whose relics were kept in the domaine's ancient monastery for many years. Domaine Laroche owns 63 hectares of Chablis vineyard on the famous Kimmeridgian soil that gives the wines such precision. Each plot, of which there are 30 in total, has a different exposure, soil depth and vine age which contributes complexity to the wine and means that every parcel ripens at a different time. Gregory Viennois refers to Chardonnay's 'two-day window' of maturity - if the parcels aren't harvested in this time the precious Chablis aromas are lost. VINTAGE The 2015 vintage started with very good conditions during flowering, with dry and sunny weather. These conditions continued and were ideal for preventing diseases during ripening. On the morning of 1st September, a hailstorm affected the vineyards of Les Clos and Les Blanchots. This resulted in a partial loss of yield but didn’t impact the quality of the grapes due to careful sorting in the vineyard and in the cellar.

The silver lining is that the final wine is so darn good.’ Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast ‘Regardless of how they were made, the majority of the 2018 reds in my tastings were beautifully structured with ripe fruit and potent tannins, yet there is an impressive drinkability to them, which is a great sign of quality.’ James Suckling ‘Many believe the potential quality of the wines could be on par with classic vintages such as 1990, 2005 and 2010’ Wine Spectator ‘The fact is that 2018 made excellent quality wines across the board from the simplest Bordeaux to the great names. This is a sign of an exceptional year’

  • Domaine Laroche Vineyards
Domaine Laroche Vineyards The vineyards of Domaine Laroche are spread out across the entire region of Chablis, located in the northernmost section of Burgundy, 150 kilometers (93 miles) south of Paris, between Champagne and the Côte d’Or. Chardonnay is a vigorous variety that therefore requires careful fruit-quantity control. The Domaine Laroche philosophy relies on one-man plots, meaning that one person is wholly responsible for the care of a single vineyard parcel, from the pruning, soil conditioning and control of yields to the sorting of the harvest. Springtime frost, less frequent now with climate change, remains a constant risk that conditions the viticulture. Thus, pruning takes place twice, in order to prevent early budburst that would expose the plants to an April or May frost, as well as to shape the vines and control yields. Domaine Laroche implements a systematic debudding in order to space the branches, ventilate the grapes and control yields. This work is completed by a green harvest if the quantity of grapes is excessive. Leaf removal allows for maximum sun exposure, enabling better and more even ripening of the grapes. The soil is plowed in order to allow the roots to develop under optimal conditions. Crops are also planted for aeration of the soil, and controlled grass-seeding is used to regulate drainage and protect the soil wildlife. Vineyard irrigation is not permitted in Chablis. The area’s unique Kimmeridgian soil contains just the right amount of limestone to impart the mineral characteristics that have become so coveted in Chablis wines. This soil is also composed of the correct levels of gravel necessary for good drainage and a substratum of clay to preserve enough water for the health of the vines.

  • Bordeaux 2020 En Primeur
BORDEAUX 2020 EN PRIMEUR 2020 EN PRIMEUR WINE Bordeaux 2020 It is not often that Bordeaux serves up a trilogy of top vintages. The last time that we saw three consecutive excellent vintages was in the late 1980’s, when we were spoiled by the trilogy of 1988, 1989 and 1990. The Wine Advocate lead on the 2018 vintage, labelling it “high in the list of greatest ever vintages in Bordeaux”. Jane Anson gave 2019 a 4.5/5 score and only just behind the greats of 2010 and 2016. Released during the first lockdown, it is also one of the best value vintages in years, although the Châteaux did limit the amount of wine released En Primeur, unsure of how the market would perform. So, what about 2020? Is it indeed the third in a trilogy of exceptional vintages, as touted by many wine world critics, or is it just Bordeaux hype? Let’s remember, the Bordelais are the true masters of hype! The weather pattern was not without its challenges, and in this respect, there were a lot of similarities with both 2018 and 2019. A mild and rainy winter, a hot and wet Spring with a precocious flowering, followed by a hot summer and a warm, dry and early harvest. From our tastings we certainly concur that there are many beautifully crafted wines produced in this vintage, very much in the classic style of claret. We were very impressed by the freshness and lower alcohol levels, which enabled the individual terroirs to express their true characteristics. The last few years have seen a welcome return to the more, traditional, cultured style of winemaking, following the retirement of Robert Parker, whose influence lead to a richer, more extracted and alcoholic style of Bordeaux.

  • Silvaner Subtle, Shapely & Stylish
Silvaner subtle, shapely & stylish A RENDEZVOUS WITH TRADITION 3 THE STYLE OF SILVANER WINES Silvaner is one of the most important white grape varieties in German viticul- tural history. From its debut in Germany in the second half of the 17th century through the mid-1960s, it was the most widely planted grape variety in Germany. At its peak, it was cultivated in ca. half of Germany’s total vineyard area. It replaced inferior grape varieties, including Elbling and Gutedel, until it was supplanted by the more prolific grape Müller-Thurgau. But Silvaner has made its comeback. The world’s largest acreage of Silvaner lies in Germany, with ca. 5,000 ha (12,500 acres), where it is the fifth most important grape today, equal to 5% of the country’s vineyard area. Of this 2,371 ha (ca. 5,859 acres) are planted in Rhein hessen and 1,406 ha (3,474 acres) in Franken, the world's largest Silvaner regions. The grape is particularly adept at reflecting its terroir: mineral tones clearly underscore fruity, spicy or herbal / vegetal aromas remi- niscent of honeydew melon, apricot, apple, orange or lemon peel; coriander; celery and new-mown hay or grass; and sometimes, toasty notes – as depicted in the glass to the right. Silvaner 4 A RENDEZVOUS WITH TRADITION Leading producers plant Silvaner in top sites that are protected from wind and cold, yet have good circulation and sufficient moisture. If left unchecked, it is a prolific bearer of grapes suitable for uncomplicated everyday wines. With quality-oriented vineyard maintenance, including stringent pruning, Silvaner grapes can produce very good and excellent Prädikat wines.
