Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats exhibit to feature Jon Langford artwork Exhibit opens March 27, 2015, for a two-year run NASHVILLE, Tenn., December 9, 2014 – The Country Music Hall of Fame® and Museum has unveiled the artwork for its forthcoming exhibit Dylan, Cash, and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City. Created by renowned artist and punk rocker Jon Langford, the commissioned painting will serve as the exhibit motif and inspiration for other artistic elements in the exhibit design. Langford is a founding member of influential punk band the Mekons and of pioneering hard-country rockers the Waco Brothers. He was born in Newport, Wales, and studied fine art at Leeds University. Langford is known for his powerful portraits of country and rock icons, including Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley. His punk rock instincts and singular artistic eye converge in a painting style that is distinctive, demanding of engagement, and at times politically charged. For Langford, the line between Acuff-Rose and Strummer-Jones is a direct one. His preferred medium is acrylic/mixed media on “square-ish wooden objects.” The exhibit logo is intricately layered in Langford’s characteristic style. It features portraits of ’60s-era Dylan and Cash, the cityscape as seen on the back cover of Dylan’s 1969 album, Nashville Skyline, and a background of exhibit-related graffiti— including names of the featured musicians, song titles, lyrics and symbols of the era. The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, in addition to its broad scope of educational programs and archival focus, is widely known for its provocative mix of museum exhibits showcasing the evolving history of country music. -

Something’s happened to me over the last five years. I listen to, and trust, pop music far less than I did in my twenties, and the pop that I still listen to is radically different than what I grew up with. My ears cock, like a cat’s, more toward jazz, avant-garde, and instrumental hip-hop now than to the rock, rap, R&B, and beat-driven fare that sustained me for twenty years. To be fair, jazz was always there, ever since I bought a $20 CD of Miles Davis’s Capitol/Blue Note years in a cold January morning in 1994. I bought it from Sound Warehouse, a chain that’s long gone, because the cover was cool and Davis—with his close-cropped hair and natty suit—looked cooler than I could ever hope for. It was a sophistication to aspire toward, and to try and impress girls with. -

BUZZCOCKS Christmas 1976. Manchester punk pioneers Buzzcocks formed by Howard Devoto and Pete Shelley have recorded and are just about to have phenomenal success with the groundbreaking, Spiral Scratch EP. Two months later, as the release starts to take off, Howard Devoto leaves. A quick reshuffle and Pete Shelley takes over lead vocals. Over the years, the lineups change. Only Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle remain constant members of this iconic band. The methodology remains constant too: short, sharp slices of sublime guitar punk pop music, revered by a global army of fans and vitally influential to legions of bands coming up behind. Flash-forward to 2018. Buzzcocks have been throttling back a bit, being a bit more exclusive but still very busy. The band signs their catalogue to Domino Records and announce a landmark performance of “Singles Going Steady” at the Royal Albert Hall for June 2019 with The Skids and Penetration. It looks as if Buzzcocks are going to enjoy some well deserved and high profile recognition of their contribution to British culture. On 6th December, that bright prospect is thrown into darkness with Pete's tragic and unexpected death. The Albert Hall show is recast as a tribute to Pete Shelley with remaining members Steve Diggle, Chris Remington, and Danny Farrant, joined by original band members, 'special guest' vocalists and guitarists. For now and into the future Buzzcocks will continue with Steve on lead vocals/guitar, Chris Remington on Bass, and Danny Farrant on Drums with an added guitarist. Commitments will be honoured; you can't hold a good band down. -

During the early period of punk’s development in the United Kingdom, a distinct division of labour can be seen in the impact of an ‘anyone can do it’ DIY ethos on a range of activities.2 hese range from live performance to the creation and manufacture of punk artifacts (clothes, posters, lyers, fanzines, records). While some of these areas ofered new opportunities for amateur producers, within more technical areas of manufacturing, including the physical production of records, do-it-yourself could only have a nominal impact. Many punk groups did not have access to sound recording technologies, and even of they did, they would have to hand over the cutting and pressing of vinyl to a professional outit. -
