Your thoughts and views 1. What does ELEMENTS (圓方) mean? Why do you think the mall is named as ELEMENTS (圓方)? What might the rationale behind the naming and the design of the architecture? Teacher’s Copy The Chinese name 圓方 means heaven and earth. It also means containers for delicacies, delicious and expensive dishes. The English name “Elements” refers to the Chinese “five elements of metal, wood, water, fire and earth, from which people in the past believed that they formed everything about nature.” (The western view of elements of nature are earth, air, fire and water.) It may imply that the mall is includes everything on earth. It has all the goodies for their customers. And the fact that it is a transportation hub, it is where people can reach heaven and earth from there. 2. Why is the shopping mall built amidst a train station, hotel, and office and residential buildings? Think of the name of the shopping mall, ELEMENTS. How are those buildings related to the mall? Teacher’s Copy • Convenience for the people working, living and visiting there • Catchment area for sources of customers • As a hub for different transportation means, the mall is in the centre and terminal for travelers. It can easily be reached by people from everywhere in Hong Kong, which in a sense, connects the heaven and the earth of the place.
