The first week of term 2, year 10 students participated in an experiment run by Monash University. Students conducted an investigation to find out what appearance zebra fish babies would have, if they had one parent with striped appearance and the other not. Student’s firstly created a habitat for a parent fish to breed. Once fish had reproduced students spent the week watching the growth and development of the fish eggs into baby fish. Student’s learnt the importance of DNA and genetic di§erence. Results showed 50% striped and 50% unstriped.

Since the last newsletter a lot has happened. Intermediate Sport went out on Friday 16th March. There was a strong level of competition all day which saw the boys make it one game short of the final. Unlucky boys, but a few lessons learnt for next year. The girls team was competitive but didn’t make the finals. Thanks to Mr Keane and Mr Nguyen for their support on the day. Year 8 sport (Wednesday 21st March) had both boys and girls Volleyball teams go to Springers to compete at the District level. The boys fell just short of the finals, but the Girls team went on to win the day and bring back the second pennant for the year. Thanks to Mr Dickson, Ms Menezes, Skye Silbery and Aliyah Jesson (both 9B) for their assistance with the training, and hopefully the girls can continue through the Preliminary Final prior to the Region Finals. Tuesday 27th March was the date for Year 7 District sports. Again we fielded a Boys and Girls Volleyball team, but with mixed results. The girls improved throughout the day, but the early losses meant they missed the finals. The boys were undefeated all day and had a couple of great games, including the final. A little luck and consistent play see them bring the third pennant back to the College this year, and they join the Yr 8 Girls in competing in a Preliminary Final to ensure entry to the Region Finals in May. Thanks to Ms Bajrektarevic, Skye Silbery, Aliyah Jesson, Adamson Toafa and Alisa Rizvic for their assistance. We had 4 boys go to Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre to compete at the Region levels. This is one swim away from the State Finals. Huy Vu (Yr 10) competed in 5 individual events, and won Bronze in the 15 Boys 50m Breaststroke. A bad finish saw him just miss the Silver medal by 0.16 of a second. So close but a Bronze medal at Region Level is fantastic. Hoang Vu (Yr 7) has sat in the stands and watched his big brother the last two years compete at Region level. This year he had his own chance by competing in 5 individual events. He won the Bronze medal in the 12-13yrs Boys 50m Butterfly. Again an excellent result. Jayden Kao had two individual swims on the day, and certainly found the going tough in his events. He swam really well but finished outside of the medals. Shannon Fitzpatrick joined the three boys for the 15yr Boys Medley and Freestyle relays. A great e§ort to finally get a relay team to the Region Finals. A beautiful venue and great weather produced 2 Bronze medals, and the four boys represented the College with great attitudes, enthusiasm and learnt valuable lessons for next year. Well done boys.
Last Thursday 26th April we had both the Yr 7 Boys and Yr 8 Girls participate in the Region Preliminary round against Mornington Secondary College. Both teams play consistent, error free Volleyball which saw them win comfortably in both matches. They will now represent the District at the Region Final on Thursday 3rd May. We wish them luck on the day as they are very close to making the State finals. Many of the photos in the newsletter have already been posted on the Noble Park Secondary College Facebook page, and I hope to keep people as up to date as possible when we have sports and activities organised which show the great attitude, pride and enthusiasm shown by all involved. Almost 50 Year 10 students attended the South East Careers Expo and Try a Trade excursion on Tuesday 24 April at the Cranbourne Racecourse. Students were able to try an array of di§erent careers and trade experiences. Students had fun learning bricklaying, automotive, floristry, childcare, beauty therapy, drone operation and 3D printing which were just a few of the interactive career demonstrations on o§er. Students also collected course and career information from the large number of Universities and Tafe providers who were represented on the day. Overall the students had a productive day, and can start thinking about their future career choices.

The Football Program continues to grow with 38 students now involved. Many of the students have brought back the necessary paperwork to be a part of the program. Without this completed, some students will find they will be turned away from training in the coming weeks. The students were also told in an explicit meeting at the start of this term that the Program is a Student – Athlete program. Student comes first and we are starting to see patterns in Progress Reports and conversations with Co-ordinators that suggest some students need to focus on their studies more than the Football Program. This will be followed through for the rest of the 2018 and we will be monitoring all students. It is essential the good skills of being organised, punctual, displaying good e§ort and behaviour are in everyday class, not just through the Program. ------In 2017, we started exploring the connection with the Forest Hill College Football program and how we could both use each other for di§erent events and activities. We had 2 friendly matches late last year where the di§erent squads could apply some of the skills and tactics learnt through training in a match situation. We endeavour to host some of these friendlies in 2018 so each group gets a chance to travel and see each other’s ground. We held the first friendly in late March this year, with an atmosphere that would rival a weekend game. The first half went throughout lunch, then the second half was played during period 5. Our boys were well interchanged through the match with most of the Football Program members getting a run in the first half, the second half or both. A lot of mistakes made, some great plays and plenty of communication and teamwork areas to continue to improve on. Thanks to Kosta and Neb for bringing Forest Hill College down to our oval. Thanks to Nathan Verderosa for refereeing, and the students and sta§ that came down to see what our boys have been learning and some of the great skill that we do possess. Drama News
Year 10 Drama students recently visited Monash University, where they met other students from schools across Melbourne, who are all participating in the Drama Victoria Schools Theatre Festival. Our students participated in acting workshops, and began devising their own performance which they will work on back at school, ready for their performance night on June 5. They all had a lot of fun, learnt a lot of new skills and techniques, and made some new friends as well!
Melbourne International Comedy Festival Lucky year 9 and 10 Drama students recently had the opportunity to attend the National Final of the Class Clowns Comedy Competition. The show, which was part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, was staged at the Forum Theatre in the city. Students were treated to 14 hilarious stand-up comedy routines, performed by secondary students selected from around the country – a couple of our students are already planning to enter next year! As a bonus, two professional comedy acts also performed – the Travelling Sisters, and Irish comedian David O’Doherty. A handful of students who weren’t able to attend didn’t miss out either – they travelled into the city that weekend to see a standup show performed by Australian comedian Daniel O’Connell. A great time was had by all – there was certainly a lot more laughter than on most school excursions!

General Assessment Test All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3 and 4 sequences must sit the General Assessment Test on Wednesday, 13th June 2018 at the College. Students are required to attend period 1 classes and then make their way to the College Hall and be seated by 10.00am
The GAT will commence at 10.00am and conclude at 1.15pm. This is a 3 hour test with a designated 15 minute reading time. Because it is a general test, no special study is required for the GAT. However to familiarise the students with the formatting and type of questions which might be asked, the College will be running a PRACTICE GAT on Tuesday, 29th May 2018. The PRACTICE GAT will follow the same processes and procedures as the actual GAT, commencing at 10.00am and concluding at 1.15pm. This is a 3 hour test with a designated 15 minute reading time. Please note: Due to the intensive nature and lengthy duration of the GAT/PRACTICE GAT, students will be dismissed from the College at 1.15pm on both dates.
Further Information: Although GAT results do not count directly towards a student’s VCE results, they play an important role in checking that school-based and external assessments have been accurately assessed, and in calculating Derived Examination Scores. The General Achievement Test is a test of general knowledge and skills in: • Written communication • Mathematics, science and technology • Humanities, the arts and social sciences. These areas are very broad. Each represents a body of general knowledge and skills that students are likely to have built up through their school years. Compass is an online school and student management tool which provides parents with easy access to student performance, attendance, events and is an easy way to directly communicate with your child’s teachers.

2018 Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge
The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and (Noble Park Secondary College is excited to be participating.
The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 7 September 2018.
All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. If you would like your child‘s name to appear on the Honour Roll, please sign the attached form and return it to your school.

UNIFORM CODE AGREEMENT
All students and parents are expected to read and sign this agreement as a condition of enrolment at Noble Park Secondary College.
The Uniform Code for Noble Park Secondary College has been designed to:
• develop a sense of pride in the students of the College, and to promote the College ethos. • enhance the safety of students through the easy identification of persons not belonging to the College who are on College premises. • promote equality among students through common dress. • ensure the safe management of student groups in out-of-College activities.
UNIFORM CODE: • All students at Noble Park Secondary College will wear the specified uniform, when travelling to, when at, when travelling from the College, and when attending out-of-College activities, at all times unless otherwise directed by the Administration. • This Uniform Code provides for the provision of uniform from suppliers authorised by the College Council.
COLLEGE UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS GENERAL APPEARANCE APPEARANCE: The College uniform is to be worn in an appropriate manner at all times. It should be clean and in good repair. Ties should be knotted at the collar. JEWELLERY: If a student has pierced ears studs or sleepers may be worn. Sleepers must be less than 1cm in diameter. NO other jewellery other than a watch is to be worn, apart from religious necklaces, which must be worn under the uniform. If other jewellery is worn it will be temporarily confiscated. MAKE-UP: Make-up must not be worn. Nail polish, other than clear, must not be worn. SHOES: Are to be leather, not suede, and are to be kept polished. SHIRTS: Winter shirts are to be tucked in at all times, and are to be buttoned up at all times. SKIRTS & DRESSES: Skirts and dresses to be worn no shorter than 10 cm above the knee. HAIR: Must be clean and neatly groomed. Must be tied back when student is working in areas where safety procedures and hygiene rules must be adhered to. No jewellery or other adornment is to be worn in the hair. No extreme hair colours or styles are permitted. HATS: Students may wear the College cap for protection from the sun, available from the uniform supplier. Labelled or multi-coloured baseball caps are not acceptable. Beanies are not permitted. GIRLS SUMMER- TERM 1 AND 4 ONLY DRESS: College dress, red, blue and white check. Material and pattern available for purchase. SHORTS: College shorts, knee length tailored black. SHIRT: Short or long sleeve butterfly collar shirt with embroidered school logo (with no tie) TIE: College tie. STEPS IN REINFORCEMENT Step 1. Year Level Coordinators will check uniform at the beginning of the day. Step 2. The YLC will implement appropriate sanctions and will issue a uniform pass for a maximum of one day, to all such students. Step 3. The YLC will keep a record of breaches of the College Dress Code. Step 4. Students who are deemed by the YLC to be persistent offenders shall be required to attend an interview with their parent or guardian and the YLC. Step 6. No student out of uniform, whether authorised or not, unless an exemption has been granted, may attend an out- of- college activity, as this reduces the teacher's ability to safely manage the students. Step 7. Persistent offenders or students without a uniform pass shall be excluded from attending College assemblies and exams and shall be supervised in a classroom, as these are occasions where students are expected to set an example to other students and to the community. No student in incorrect uniform shall be permitted for this reason, to take part in any presentation on the stage in an assembly. Step 8. Persistent offenders or students without a uniform pass shall not be permitted to participate in any situation where they are role models i.e. Peer Support Leaders, SRC activities etc.

VICTORIAN CLADDING TASKFORCE NOBLE PARK SECONDARY COLLEGE
Dear Parents and Carers,
The Victorian Cladding Taskforce was established last year to investigate the extent of external wall cladding on buildings statewide that did not comply with fire safety regulations.
The taskforce recommended the State overnment undertake a comprehensive inspection of its buildings – including those at government schools.
Our school had buildings that were in scope for the visual inspection stage, that is, buildings with two storeys or more.
The Department of Education and Training has undertaken the visual inspection, and we have been advised that there is no further remedial action required at our school.
