Foreword The Kaikohe Ecological District is a compact area between the Bay of Islands and Hokianga Harbour, and harbours a wealth of ecological values including • a rare stand of dense old growth podocarp/kauri • one of Northland’s largest wetlands • unique associations of volcanic geomorphology with lakes, wetlands and uncommon plants • a suite of habitats containing the threatened North Island brown kiwi • gumlands • remnant puriri forest on volcanic soils • remnant swamp forests and shrublands as well as many other areas with significant conservation values. -

Art’s Histories in Aotearoa New Zealand Jonathan Mane Wheoki This is the text of an illustrated paper presented at ‘Art History's History in Australia and New Zealand’, a joint symposium organised by the Australian Institute of Art History in the University of Melbourne and the Australian and New Zealand Association of Art Historians (AAANZ), held on 28 – 29 August 2010. Responding to a set of questions framed around the ‘state of art history in New Zealand’, this paper reviews the ‘invention’ of a nationalist art history and argues that there can be no coherent, integrated history of art in New Zealand that does not encompass the timeframe of the cultural production of New Zealand’s indigenous Māori, or that of the Pacific nations for which the country is a regional hub, or the burgeoning cultural diversity of an emerging Asia-Pacific nation. On 10 July 2010 I participated in a panel discussion ‘on the state of New Zealand art history.’ This timely event had been initiated by Tina Barton, director of the Adam Art Gallery in the University of Victoria, Wellington, who chaired the discussion among the twelve invited panellists. The host university’s department of art history and art gallery and the University of Canterbury’s art history programme were represented, as were the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, the City Gallery, Wellington, the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth, the Dunedin Public Art Gallery and the University of Auckland’s National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries. The University of Auckland’s department of art history1 and the University of Otago’s art history programme were unrepresented, unfortunately, but it is likely that key scholars had been targeted and were unable to attend. -

The thesis may not be reproduced elsewhere without the permission of the Author. i Portrayals of the Moriori People Historical, Ethnographical, Anthropological and Popular sources, c. 1791- 1989 By Read Wheeler A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History, Massey University, 2016 ii Abstract Michael King’s 1989 book, Moriori: A People Rediscovered, still stands as the definitive work on the Moriori, the Native people of the Chatham Islands. King wrote, ‘Nobody in New Zealand – and few elsewhere in the world- has been subjected to group slander as intense and as damaging as that heaped upon the Moriori.’ Since its publication, historians have denigrated earlier works dealing with the Moriori, arguing that the way in which they portrayed Moriori was almost entirely unfavourable. This thesis tests this conclusion. It explores the perspectives of European visitors to the Chatham Islands from 1791 to 1989, when King published Moriori. It does this through an examination of newspapers, Native Land Court minutes, and the writings of missionaries, settlers, and ethnographers. The thesis asks whether or not historians have been selective in their approach to the sources, or if, perhaps, they have ignored the intricacies that may have informed the views of early observers. The thesis argues that during the nineteenth century both Maori and European perspectives influenced the way in which Moriori were portrayed in European narrative. -

The virtual battle: Flags in Georgian marine paintings Barbara Tomlinson Abstract The 18th century saw the development of an English school of marine painting following the example of the Dutch in the previous century. When representing naval battles, artists needed to handle numerous technical details including the depiction of British squadronal colours, distin- guishing flags and signal flags. This paper examines selected actions painted by Samuel Scott (1701/2-1772), Nicholas Pocock (1741-1821), Thomas Whitcombe (c.1752-1827) and William Anderson (1757-1837) and ask - how accurate were these artists, how did they research their paintings, how did they display flags for dramatic effect and who was their intended audience? The resources of the National Maritime Museum’s collections used to illustrate this subject in- clude prints, drawings and documents. The British maritime victories of the sailing navy era were immortalized by contemporary artists. Originally a Dutch genre, by the middle of the 18th century, marine pictures were also produced by British painters who specialised in these scenes. I would like to consider the relationship between the reality and the representation with particular reference to the way the artist shows British flags, concentrating on some of the less well-known battles. One painter who took considerable pains to include accurate detail was Nicholas Po- cock. A sketchbook survives compiled by Pocock during the Battle of the Glorious 1st of June when he was able to observe the action directly from the frigate Pegasus. These small and indistinct views remind us that in contrast to the way vessels are shown in marine paintings, in reality, everything would have been much more spread out and much further away.
