Willy Sluiter Jan Willem Sluiter was born in Amersfoort, Holland, in 1873 and died in 1949 in The Hague. He lived and worked in many different towns in Holland: Zwijdrecht, Dordrecht, Rotterdam, Scheveningen, Katwijk aan Zee, Volendam, Laren and The Hague. He was a student at the “Akademie voor Beeldende Kunst” (Visual Arts Academy) in Rotterdam. He painted, made drawings, painted in water colours and lithographed: fishermen, life on the beaches in Holland, types and portraits. He was decorated many times and Holland’s most popular painter of portraits in those days. In 1923 he made a voyage to The Dutch East-Indies. 1. Het eerste nummer verscheen Eef de Hilster in december 2009 maar heette toen nog Nieuwsbrief. Voor u ligt de 49e editie van de Rond In 2010 vond ik dat de nieuwsbrief 1900. Februari 2011 – nu 10 jaar geleden wel eens een eigen naam en logo mocht - verscheen het nieuws- en informatieblad hebben. Daarvoor heb ik het bestuur een van de VVNK voor het eerst onder de naam paar suggesties voorgelegd waaronder de Rond 1900. versie waar u nu al 10 jaar aan gewend bent. Jim van der Meer Mohr DE ORANJE-SCHILDERIJEN, -AQUARELLEN, -PASTELS EN -TEKENINGEN VAN WILLY SLUITER* Voornaam kijken de koninginnen Emma, Wilhelmina en Juliana en de prinsen Hendrik en Bernhard al jarenlang neer op de leden van de Nieuwe of Littéraire Sociëteit De Witte aan het Plein in Den Haag. Hun portretten van de hand van Willy Sluiter (1873-1949) hangen op de eerste verdieping in de Oranjegalerij van de 19e-eeuwse sociëteit, samen met de portretten van koningin Beatrix en prins Claus door Hessel de Boer, een portret van Willem van Oranje van een onbekende kunstenaar en, sinds 2017, de portretten van koning Willem-Alexander en koningin Máxima van de hand van Urban Larsson.1 Als lid van deze sociëteit speelde ik al jaren met het plan om eens aandacht te schenken aan deze portretten door Sluiter. Daar kwam nog eens bij dat de Geschiedkundige Vereniging Oranje-Nassau twee studies in de collectie heeft die aan de basis staan van de portretten van koningin Wilhelmina en prins Hendrik. Reden te meer om de kunstwerken van Willy Sluiter die aan het Oranjehuis zijn gerelateerd nader te bestuderen. Dat zijn er veel meer dan tot nu toe bekend was. Dit artikel wordt dan ook besloten met een catalogus van alle mij nu bekende werken. e gentleman-kunstenaar Willy – voluit Jan Willem – Sluiter (afb. 1) werd in 1873 als zoon van een notaris geboren in Amersfoort. Hij bracht een belangrijk deel van zijn jeugd door in Zwijndrecht2, waar zijn tekentalent al vrij jong bleek. Reeds tijdens zijn gymnasiumtijd in Dordrecht ging hij in de leer bij Janus Terwen en na zijn middelbare school studeerde hij, mede op aanraden van de kunstenaar Bernard Blommers, aan Dde Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten en Wetenschappen in Rotterdam.

PROVENANCE Dr. Katherine Kromm Merritt, Stamford, Connecticut, until circa 1990, from whom acquired by Private Collection, Vinalhaven, Maine, until 2015 In the warm morning glow of a country kitchen, a young boy entertains his little sister seated in a high chair. In return her adoring glance speaks volumes. The dramatic angling of the baby’s high chair, whose design harks back to the seventeenth century, animates the scene. Through an economy of means and a limited palette of largely brown and orange, Jacob Simon Hendrik Kever captures the richness of the moment and its idyllic rusticity. Josef Israels was the first to encourage Kever to study painting. He began his training at the Koninklijke Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam, in 1869, studying with Petrus Franciscus Greive until 1872. From 1874 - 1875 he attended the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, also in Amsterdam. From 1878-1879 under the tutelage of Charles Verlat he was enrolled in the Koninklijke Acaemie voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp. His subjects included portraits, cityscapes, landscapes, flowers, genre and interior scenes in watercolors, oils, and etchings. Throughout his career he worked in Blaricum, Nunspeet, the province of North Brabant and Eemnes. Although not technically considered a member of the Laren School he also lived there from 1877-1879 and again in 1905-1922. He further maintained an apartment in Amsterdam near the Oosterpark where he resided during the winter months.

Deze stichting, opgericht 18 juni 2004 en ingeschreven bij de Kamer van Koophandel onder nummer 37112970, is vernoemd naar de uitnodigende tekst op het schilderij 'Artist Kom Binne' van de Duitse schilder Carl Windels. Stichting Artist Kom Binne doet onderzoek naar Volendam als kunstenaarskolonie en houdt een register bij van kunstenaars die in Volendam zijn geweest of werk over Volendam hebben gemaakt.
