Annars vegar er það hagnýti hluti þess sem byggir á leturtöflu með letursýnishornum úr íslenskum bókum og sýningu hennar í opnu og aðgengilegu rými Þjóðminjasafnsins. Með gerð töflunnar fékkst ákveðin mynd og yfirsýn sem sett var í sögulegt samhengi með umfjöllun í ritgerðinni. Hins vegar fólst rann- sóknarhluti verkefnisins í að skoða hvaða áhrif mismunandi leturnotkun hefur á lesendur og kanna hvernig skilja má ólíkt tákn- og myndmál leturforma, háð efnistökum textans ásamt þeim stað og þeirri stund sem lesturinn á sér stað. Með það að markmiði að rannsaka hvort bókstafir innihaldi frekari frásögn með formgerð sinni umfram hljóðtákn sitt mótuðust aðferðir og gögn rannsóknarhluta verkefnisins. Gögnum var safnað með tvennskonar hætti. Í fyrsta lagi var letursýnishornum safnað frá mismunandi tímum og þau sett í töflu með tímaás sem skiptist eftir árhundruðum og aðgreiningu í fimm bókmenntaflokka.
