The A.S. Council's move to transfer its funds from the Bank of America to Hibernia Bank is an appropriate form of protest against a corporation which holds direct ties to the racist South African nation.

The $500,000-plus involved in the move is a small amount in the bank's coffers, but the gesture of severing SJSU ties with Bank of America is significant.

The increase of $17.50 a month in banking costs with Hibernia Bank is justified. Although the transfer is largely a symbolic gesture against the bank's involvement, it draws attention to the bank's connections with a nation which openly discriminates and denies civil liberties to many of its citizens.

SJSU is following the example of Sacramento State University, Cal State Northridge and the University Foun- dation in removing the funds. Public pressure alone will not force Bank of America to discontinue its policies. Enough financial pressure, however, could be a major force behind such a change.
