Hans Knot International Radio Report November 2014 Welcome everybody to the November edition of the radio report. Many interesting e-mails as well questions, photos and sad news. First we go to someone who was not known to me till 4 weeks ago: ‘Hi Hans I was working for a period on the MV Mi Amigo during 1979. I went out with some friends while the station was off the air between the Mi Amigo and Dutch Caroline. We cleaned up the records and painted the ship and it looked quite well when it returned to the air during Easter 1979. I left the ship on the day it returned to air and came back on the Mi Amigo in September 1979. ‘Captain’ Harris was on board then, he was the only person with past ‘sea’ experience but for some reason he didn’t want to leave the vessel and return to land! Photo collection G.Tanner While on board, there was a suitable supply of beer and soft drinks for the crew members but due to excessive consumption by the captain, this had to be rationed! I’ll sort out some photos I took while I was on the Mi Amigo. Interestingly I have photos of the barge, which delivered the fuel and crew on the night before it returned to the air in April 1979, and would be willing to write up the experience of the night. Briefly, the events unfolded as follows: A few weeks before I joined the Mi Amigo in 1979 to carry out maintenance and painting works in preparation to the stations return to air, a storm hit the south east coast of the UK and washed a barge containing a crane onto the beach at Margate, Kent. -

2010 to 2014 Mustang and Shelby GT500 Antenna Relocation Instructions Thank you for purchasing the antenna relocation kit / antenna delete kit from Four Fields Garage. There are no permanent changes made to the car from installing this kit. This Mustang and Shelby GT500 "antenna delete kit" removes the mast antenna on the rear quarter panel. A gasketed machined aluminum antenna cap is used to cover the antenna hole in the quarter panel. The antenna hole cover is secured in place by the gasket and a bolt on the underside of the quarter panel. This antenna delete kit allows you to either repurpose your defroster grid as the new AM/FM antenna or install a separate window mounted antenna (for example, separately purchase the Metra 44-UA25 Universal Window Mounted Antenna in addition to this kit). Installation of the antenna relocation kit provides excellent FM and fair AM reception (receive the strong AM stations). Photo by Google Search This office got a mentioning on the Kate Cary’s Facebook page. I came there by another item brought in by Andy Archer. I’m interested to know if this is indeed the building where the office was before they went to Van Hoogendorpstreet in the Hague. Kate: Yes indeed, the office was on the top floor – I spent many nights looking out of that window watching the tender coming and going to the ship you could see the lights from the tender quite clearly. This space is reserved for your B&W or greyscale images. Give us your best shots! Gerry Smerchanski of the Winnipeg Centre adopted the hard way to record the crater Vieta on September 27 last year. Gerry combined paper and pencil at the end of a Celestron Ultima 8 with a binoviewer at 200× to capture the crater with its small central hill and off-centre craterlet. Gerry notes that “Crater Vieta usually gets overlooked by me as it is near Gassendi, which is a favourite of mine. But the lighting was perfect to go from Gassendi down along an arc of dramatically lit craters—including Cavendish—to Vieta where the terminator was found.” Vieta is 80 km in diameter with 4500-m walls on the west side and 3000-m walls to the east. To the southeast lies the crater Fourier. Michael Gatto caught the elusive “Werner X” during its few hours of visibility on November 20 from 9 to 9:45 p.m. Michael used an 8-inch f/7.5 Newtonian on a Dob mounting from Dartmouth, N.S., in average-to-poor seeing. The sketch was done at the eyepiece with various pencils and a blending stump on paper, then scanned and darkened in Photoshop. -

Hans Knot International Radio Report Autumn 2020 Welcome radio lovers to another edition of the Hans Knot International Radio Report. Also this time I hope you will enjoy the memories from others about our rich history in radio, including a high percentage from the Offshore Radio world. During the last months I did get, and I don’t know why, several e mails with a cv included from people in countries like Ukraine, Belarus and more who write that they are qualified to step into my offshore fleet. Probably searching on the word ‘offshore’ and seeing my name a lot. Well of course there are no radio ships anymore so no jobs available. In this issue again some e mails, stories as well as the start of a new list with a special subject. More about that later but first to Amstelveen in the Netherlands and the USA. From Daphne van Beuningen from Amstelveen, who was unknown to me until recently, I received a few interesting documents. She took them from Baton Rouge (Louisiana) to the Netherlands. Previously it was owned by her father Wim van Beuningen, who lived there for some years. He had always been a fan of radio and radio amateur. The logbook is from 1965 and tells, among other things, about the fact that the crew was hungry. Wim van Beuningen got it, in turn, from a crew member of the Mi Amigo. My very regular writer to the report has been in hospital for an operation. I’m talking about Rosko. Mid-September he wrote about going into hospital soon for a back surgery, which took place on the 22nd and on the 24th he wrote that he was back home again. -

The US Army on Radio Luxembourg. Posted by: Jack Perkins: The American/Allied liberation of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg began on September 9th of 1944. This also brought the seizure of Radio Luxembourg from the Third Reich. The station was intact, not destroyed by the departing Germans. The Luxembourgers immediately offered the station to the Allies as part of the continuing war effort, and the US Army made good use of Radio Luxembourg, returning it after the surrender. Today, Radio Luxembourg still transmits its French Service on Long Wave at 234 KHz with 500 KW. (The Long Wave band has always been active in Europe.) Communications monitoring has been a hobby, business and a function of government ever since radio was first developed. Scanners, also known as Police Scanners, which were developed in the 1960s and quickly blossomed in the '70s, allow multiple public safety communications channels to be rapidly "scanned" or checked for activity (public safety transmissions are not continuous - unlike AM-FM and TV broadcasts). The timing of the invention of the scanner could not have been better. Civil unrest in the U.S. at the time, as well as a general interest in learning more about local police and fire operations, helped grow the business.
