The of the Advent, Boston Sunday in the Octave of St Michael & All Angels October 4th, 2020 at 11:00 am

Important.

● Please wear a mask while you are in the building. Your mask should cover both your mouth and your nose. [Children under 2 should not wear a mask; age 2 to 5 is at the discretion of the parent –Massachusetts Safety Standards for Places of Worship, Sec III.4] ● Hand sanitizer is available at the entrance, and for use before and after Communion. ● For the time being, there is no coffee hour. If you socialize on the sidewalks, please wear masks and maintain appropriate distancing.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR RECEIVING COMMUNION At the time of Communion, please exit your pews via the side aisles, maintaining a six-foot distance between individuals or households. Communion will be distributed at the steps of the All Saints’ and the steps of the Lady . The Diocese requires that Communion be given standing (to avoid high-touch surfaces like altar rails), and in one kind only. Low-gluten Hosts are available at the Lady Chapel steps. With your mask on, the priest will put the Host in your hand. Step six feet towards the center aisle, slip down your mask and consume the Host. Then, replacing your mask, return to your pew via the center aisle, maintaining a distance between individuals and households. There is no need to genuflect or bow to the High Altar on your way back, as in receiving Communion you now have Jesus inside of you!

Lesson Genesis 28:10–17 [seated] Jacob left Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place, and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of

God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the Lord stood above it a nd said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you.” Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place; and I did not know it.” A nd he was afraid, and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

The Holy Gospel John 1:47–51 Glory be to thee, O Lord. Jesus saw Nathan′a-el coming to him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” Nathan′a-el said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig

tree, I saw you.” Nathan′a-el answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” J esus answered him, “Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than

these.” A nd he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Sermon Fr David Thompson Creed Missa VIII, Incarnatus att. Lassus ¶ The Creed is sung by the Choir. I BELIEVE in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets: And I believe one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: ✠ And the Life of the world to come. Amen.

General Intercession

Confession Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: We acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we from time to time most grievously have committed, by thought, word, and deed, against thy divine Majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us, the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

WEDNESDAY ZOOM CLASS: DOUBT & THE CHRISTIAN. Have you ever wrestled with doubt in your Christian walk? Doubt can creep up on Christians from time to time, especially in seasons of isolation and fear. In these sessions we will be discussing the experience of doubt and how we continue forward in faith. In particular, we will address some common doubts that plague us as Christians and how to think, pray, and live through them. With Fr David Thompson from 7pm-8pm; link will be sent out in Wednesday email.

INTERGENERATIONAL ENTR’ACTE BEGINS TODAY. For adults and older students, we will offer an intergenerational series on Christ in the Liturgy. All that we do in liturgical worship relates to the Lord Jesus Christ. Whether you are new to the Advent, a returning guest, or a regular, the centrality of Christ in our worship is a helpful reminder for all who join in our weekly assembly. This fall we will turn our attention to the basic doctrines of Christ—namely his Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, and Ascension—to teach the centrality of Christ in the liturgy. This offering will take place in the church from 10:15am to 10:45am, and will be team-taught by the clergy.

GODLY PLAY for younger children takes place in the Library today from 10:15 to 10:45am.

WEEKLY EMAIL. If you are not receiving our weekly emails, please send a blank email to [email protected] with “add email” in the subject line.
