Dr. Buick gave me the confidence to pursue the subject of food in art, which at first seemed quirky and unusual to many. She never flinched at the connections I forged between discourses of art, food, and racism, and always trusted my intuition that representations of food are intensely political. Through her example, I see how researching and teaching the subject of American art can be a vehicle for social change. It was in Dr. Craven‘s Central American Art History course that I first considered the political circumstances for the production of foods such as the banana, and how they bear meaning on the cultivation of art and empire in the broader Americas. With four fruit case-studies on representations of grapes, oranges, watermelons, and bananas, this project demonstrates how the visual culture of food provides a platform for examining the expansion and reconstruction of the United States in the decades following the Civil War. While chapters on grape and orange representations from California and Florida reveal the ways in which fruit serviced national expansion and the colonization of America‘s fruit-lands, a chapter on watermelon imagery illustrates the racial stereotypes assigned to food that reinforced social divisions between white from ―colored‖ eaters. A final chapter on depictions of bananas investigates the exploitation of land and labor underwriting American fruit corporations in Central America. By directing attention to representations of fruit in the Sunbelt and broader Americas, this dissertation reorients the American Art History canon centered in the Northeast to art and artists in the country‘s borders. This project also widens the scope of American Art History by looking beyond the fine arts to the visual culture of cookbooks, crate labels, and vi silverware. Examining those who labored and prepared the fruits visible in artistic depictions sheds light on another overlooked subject. In the end, readers discover that representations of food in American art and culture are neither innocent nor straight forward, but politically-charged pictures driven by ideologies that support or challenge an imperial agenda in North America. This study explores how Coates represents and explains black manhood as well as how he defines his own identity as being excluded from United States society, yet as being central to the nation. Coates’s definition of masculinity is analyzed by focusing on his representations of boyhood and fatherhood.

    Armenian Folia Anglistika Culture On Some Forms of “Out-Group” Intolerance and “Unlimited” Tolerance in Linguoculture Narine Harutyunyan Yerevan State University Abstract The subject of the research is ethnic intolerance as a form of relationship between “we” and “other”, manifested in various modifications of the hostility towards others. There are several main types of ethno-intolerant relations: ethnocentrism; xenophobia, migrant phobia, etc. The author's definitions of such concepts as “intercultural whirlpool”, “ethnocentric craters” and “xenophobic craters”, “emotional turbulence of communication” are presented. The negative, discreditable signs of ethnicity of a particular national community are represented in the lexical units of English in such a way as if the “other” ethnic group has the shortcomings that are not in the “we” group. The problem of “unlimited” tolerance is considered when “strangers” – immigrants, seek to impose “their own” religious and cultural traditions, worldview and psychological dominant on local people. The article deals with the problems of intolerance and “unlimited” tolerance not only as complex socio-psychological, but also as linguocultural phenomena that are actualized in the linguistic consciousness of the ethnic group (English-speaking groups, in particular). The article also deals with the problem of “aggressive” expansion of the English language, which destroys the nation’s value system, distorts its language habits and perception of the surrounding reality, and creates discriminatory dominance of a certain linguoculture. Kyla Windley · Wednesday, May 22nd, 2019 We are proud to publish Hollywood Lens Z, a series of student essays written in partial fulfillment of Dr. Kathleen Tarr’s first-year course taught in the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University, “That’s Entertainment! The Rhetoric of Hollywood’s Inequities.” PERVASIVE STEREOTYPES OF BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA If you were to ask me, a young Black woman, to paint a picture of what Black people are like purely based on primetime (8:00pm-11:00pm) television depictions, several adjectives immediately come to mind: loud, ghetto, uneducated, and unkempt. Pairing stereotypical depictions of Black people on primetime television with having grown up in majority-white spaces, I have internalized this kind of racism. I perpetually worry about being associated with negative stereotypes assigned to Blackness, an integral part of my identity. In what I imagine to be subconscious efforts to make sure that I would never align with such stereotypes, I would go through periods in which I would only wear my hair straightened, listen to more pop because my preferred genre of rap was described as “hood,” and trade out Air Jordans for Vince and Burberry. These superficial changes were part of my attempt to prove that I am above the negative images of Black people that primetime television and Hollywood at large spoon-feeds us from a young age. Unfortunately, this is not a phenomenon that only affects me; I’ve heard similar anecdotes from Black youth in contexts both vastly different from and uncannily similar to mine.
