Four years ago, when I first embarked on researching this dissertation, many nights were spent wondering how on earth I would be able to travel to the numerous archives in various countries that held pertinent documents. Thesis Advisor: Daniel L. Byman, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This model predicts progress in transnational illicit market suppression campaigns by comparing the relative efficiency and support of the suppression regime vis-à-vis the targeted illicit market. Focusing on competitive adaptive processes, this ‘Boxer’ model theorizes that these campaigns proceed cyclically, with the illicit market expressing itself through a clandestine business model, and the suppression regime attempting to identify and disrupt this model. Success in disruption causes the illicit network to ‘reboot’ and repeat the cycle. If the suppression network is quick enough to continually impose these ‘rebooting’ costs on the illicit network, and robust enough to endure long enough to reshape the path dependencies that underwrite the illicit market, it will prevail. Two scripts put this model into practice. The organizational script uses two variables, efficiency and support, to predict organizational evolution in response to competitive pressures.

Conquest displaced the Spanish colony and its subjects, some of who fled into the mountainous interior of Jamaica and assumed lives in isolation. This project reconstructs the historical experiences of the “negro” populations of Spanish and English Jamaica, which included its “free black”, “mulattoes”, indigenous peoples, and others, and examines how English cosmopolitanism and distinct interactions laid the groundwork for and informed the syncretic identities and communities that emerged decades later. Upon the framework of English conquest within the West Indies, I explore the experiences of one such settlement alongside the early English colony of Jamaica to understand how a formal relationship materialized between the entities and how its course inflected the distinct socio-political identity and emergent political agency embodied by the Jamaican Maroons.

Trapp ABSTRACT This dissertation is about the people living at the Buduburam Liberian refugee camp in Ghana and how they navigate their position within a social hierarchy that is negotiated on a global terrain. The lives of refugees living in Ghana are constituted through vast and complex social relations that span across the camp, Ghana, West Africa and nations further afield such as the United States, Canada and Australia. The conditions under which these relations have developed and continue to unfold are mediated by structural forces of nation-state policies, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the international governing body for refugees, and the global political economy. Situated within the broader politics of protracted refugee situations and the question of why people stay in long-term camps, this research is a case study of one refugee camp and how its people access resources, build livelihoods and struggle with power. In particular, this dissertation uses concepts of the Liberian-American dream and the shadow colony to explore the historic and contemporary terms and circumstances ii through which Liberian refugees experience and evaluate migratory prospects and restrictions. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The production of this dissertation has been an outcome of many places and people.     The Three Lives of Edward Cornwallis by John G. Reid Read before the Royal Nova Scotia Historical Society 16 January 2013 or some twenty years now, a lively controversy has flourished over the reputation of the first Halifax-based Fgovernor of Nova Scotia, Edward Corn- wallis. Was Cornwallis a courageous and far-sighted founder of Halifax and builder of colonial Nova Scotia, or was he a genocidal imperialist whose chief claim to notoriety was his placement of a price on the heads of all indigenous inhabitants of Mi’kma’ki?1 Should Cornwallis continue to be distin- guished by the prominence of his statue in downtown Halifax, or should all public marks of his existence—statue, names of Figure 1. Portrait of Edward Cornwallis by Sir Joshua Reynolds, circa. 1756 places and streets—be erased? Insofar as I have made previous public comments on such issues, I have expressed concern about the application of the twentieth-century term ‘genocide’ to an eighteenth-century situation, but have applauded the action of the Halifax Regional School Board in renaming Cornwallis Junior High School and have suggested that the statue belongs in a museum with an appropriate interpretive panel rather than in its current place of public display. My focus in this essay, however, is rather different. I will offer a histori- cal portrayal of Cornwallis in three contexts. The first will be the eighteenth-century Cornwallis. What, from the viewpoint of historical analysis, is or is not significant about the Nova Scotia career, brief as it was, of this early governor? The second will be the Cornwallis of the statue.
