Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. A complete list of these new species for 1978-1993, taxonomically arranged, and their bibliographic references is given in an appendix. -

FOREWORD Bryozoansare predominantly marine, invertebrate animals whose curious and often attractive forms have long excited the interest of naturalists. In past times they were regarded as plants, and the plant- !ike appearance of some species was later formalized in the term "zoophyte", which also embraced the hydroids and a few other enigmatic animal groups. As "corallines" they were considered to be close to the Cnidaria, while "moss animals" neatly described the appearance of a feeding colony. Establishing their animal nature did not resolve the question of systematic affinity. It is only comparatively recently that Bryozoa have been accepted as a phylum in their own right, although an early view of them as for- ming a single phylogenetic unit, the Lophophorata, with the sessile, filter-feeding brachiopods and pho- ronids, still persists. -

Title: SUBTIDAL BRYOZOAN FAUNA OFF CAPE ARAGO, OREGON Approved: Dr. Craig M. Young The subtidal marine biodiversity off the Oregon coast is poorly studied and not well understood. The few subtidal studies in Oregon have focused on vertebrates with little regard to invertebrate assemblages. Oregon’s subtidal Bryozoa play key roles in these assemblages by providing habitat, food, and, potentially, pollution sequestration. Using dredge samples collected over two years, we assembled a comprehensive list of Bryozoa found between 30-60 m depth off Cape Arago, Oregon. A total of 41 species were collected, including one new species in the genus Fenestruloides. Although 25 families were represented in our samples, 17 (68%) families were only represented by one species and only two families (8%) were represented by more than three species. This data provides the first comprehensive survey of Oregon’s subtidal bryozoan biodiversity and is an important first step in understanding the region’s biodiversity. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Craig Young for his support and guidance that made this research possible as well as his work editing this thesis. -

The Lophophorate phyla of British Columbia: Entoprocts, Bryozoans, Phoronids, and Brachiopods by Aaron Baldwin, PhD Candidate School of Fisheries and Ocean Science University of Alaska, Fairbanks Questions and comments can be directed to Aaron Baldwin at [email protected] In older metazoan classifications it was customary to group the phyla which bear a lophophore together into a superphylum (sometimes a phylum) called the Lophophorata or Spiralia. In more recent classifications based on morphology, paleontology, and molecular work it become clear that this grouping is artificial. There is strong support for a classification of a group called the Lophotrochozoa, which includes the traditional lophophorates as well as the mollusks, annelids, nemerteans, and a few other phyla. It is likely that the lophophore (an unusual feeding appendage) is primitive in the group and has been lost in some surviving taxa while retained in others. The list of Entoprocta and Bryozoa was taken from O’Donghue & O’Donoghue (1923, 1926) and Osburn (1950, 1952, 1953). More recent changes to the taxonomy were taken from the Bryozoa Home page (www.bryozoa.net), the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS, www.itis.gov), and the World register of marine species (WoRMS, www.marinespecies.org). It is highly likely that I have missed some changes in classification. With the species list I attempted to err on the side of caution so there are undoubtedly species missing from the list that have been named since 1953 or were subsequently discovered in BC since my last comprehensive source. The freshwater taxa are certainly incomplete (see note at end of checklist). -
