The project was led by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with other cultural partners across England. The Full English digital archive (www.vwml.org) continues to provide access to thousands of records detailing traditional folk songs, music, dances, customs and traditions that were collected from across the country. Some of these are known widely, others have lain dormant in notebooks and files within archives for decades. The Full English learning programme worked across the country in 19 different schools including primary, secondary and special educational needs settings. Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world.     Dear Teacher: Welcome to New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music, an exhibition organized by the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum on Main Street program and brought to you by your state humanities council. These materials and activities were compiled to help your students observe, imagine, learn & contribute to the discussion of American roots music during their visit to the exhibition. While it’s desirable to participate in each step, it’s certainly not required. In fact, each individual piece will provide your students with thought-provoking questions and activities. You can easily customize lessons or even develop your own methods of exploring roots music! The lesson plans that accompany New Harmonies will help you create a meaningful experience for your students. Each includes Pre-visit, Visit, and Post-visit activities. All the lessons can be adapted for younger or older audiences, so evaluate each lesson before selecting activities for your students. The Pre-visit step is designed to be simple, to introduce the students to the exhibit topic, and to be easy to implement. This step is intended to stimulate the students’ curiosity and help students gather information for use in visit and post-visit activities. The Visit step is focused on information gathering. This is a time for the students to explore and read the exhibit content, enjoy audio samples, and utilize interactive components. The activity worksheets included in this section will help students gather enough information to apply their knowledge in a later classroom activity. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLIII, Number 1 Fall 2013 Don’t Shoot the Piano Player: The State of Vallenato in New York City1 Jorge Arévalo Mateus, Hunter College, CUNY & the Center for Traditional Music and Dance Vallenato is Colombia’s lively, accordion-driven popular dance music with roots in the country’s costeño (Atlantic coastal) rural communities. Traditional vallenato ensembles consisted of the diatonic button acordeón (accordion), guacharaca (stick scraper), and caja (small, single headed drum), while more commercial, urban vallenato tropical groups have added electric bass, keyboards, horns, and Afro-Cuban percussion (congas, timbales, and bongos) to their instrumentation.2 The music has a strong tradition of family practitioners, with the Celedons, Oñates, and Zuletas standing out among vallenato’s musical dynasties. Since the 1980s, vallenato has become increasingly popular, so much so that presently, along with Colombian salsa, it is the most com- mercially successful and global Colombian popular music, overshadowing cumbia, champeta, and even Afro- Colombian rap.3 As a result of increased immigration since the early 1970s, vallenato tropical has become popular in New York City’s Colombian neighborhoods located in Jackson Heights, East Elmhurst, Corona, and Astoria as well as sections of Brooklyn and neighboring New Jersey.     Palabras del señor presidente de la República, Andrés Pastrana Arango, con ocasión de la inauguración del XXXIII Festival de la Leyenda Vallenata (Valledupar, Cesar, 26 de abril de 2000) "Francisco el Hombre, así llamado porque derrotó al diablo en un duelo de improvisación de cantos, y cuyo verdadero nombre no conoció nadie, desapareció de Macondo durante la peste del insomnio y una noche reapareció sin ningún anuncio en la tienda de Catarino. Todo el pueblo fue a escucharlo para saber qué había pasado en el mundo". Con estas sencillas palabras, Gabo, el colombiano más universal de nuestra historia, presentó la leyenda de Francisco el Hombre en el vallenato más largo que se haya compuesto jamás, el cual, para mayor asombro, ni siquiera lleva música: un vallenato de trescientas páginas titulado "Cien Años de Soledad". Tal vez parezca difícil reconocer en ese "anciano trotamundos de casi 200 años", sentado "como un camaleón monolítico", al verdadero Francisco Moscote, pero es que así son las leyendas y así de grande es el talento y el realismo mágico de Gabriel García Márquez. ¡Qué maravilloso es rendir un homenaje simultáneo hoy, en esta tarima llamada como el Francisco de la historia, junto al bello río Guatapurí y bajo la sombra de los famosos Palo eMango de Valledupar, a la leyenda vallenata y al más grande escritor de nuestra historia, el mismo Gabo que ha dicho que fueron los cantos vallenatos los que le abrieron los ojos! Porque la Leyenda Vallenata, esa que vincula en un solo escenario a la misma Virgen del Rosario con las figuras hoy míticas de Francisco Moscote y de Pacho Rada y con el talento inagotable de Alejo Durán, Rafa Escalona, Leandro Díaz, Emiliano Zuleta, Lorenzo Morales y tantos otros, es la leyenda viva más importante de Valledupar, del Cesar, de toda la región Caribe y también de toda Colombia.
