102976 EVAL FOLDER COSMETIC.indd 2 2/05/11 17:26 Kuraray Co., Ltd. is the world leader in EVOH (ethylene vinyl-alcohol copolymer) production and development. An EVAL™ layer thickness of only a few microns offers a superior barrier against oxygen, fragrance and contamination, and due to its chemical resistance reduces scalping and permeation of valuable ingredients. Highly functional as an inside barrier layer, EVAL™ is also easy-to-print, and when used outside provides transparent high gloss and anti-static properties. EVAL™ helps extend product , and assure that cosmetic products reach the customer with their quality and properties intact.

Prolonging formula integrity

The barrier properties provided by EVAL™ work in both directions. Gas barrier properties keep oxygen out, avoiding the tainting or degradation of sensitive components in the product formula. The effective shelf life can usually be extended, avoiding waste and generating savings in distribution.

At the same time, the chemical and aroma barrier properties keep volatile and valuable ingredients inside the package where they belong, making sure product value and quality reach the consumer intact.

Prolonging packaging integrity

As formula ingredients become more sophisticated, they can be more senstive but also more aggressive. Especially with certain oils, mascara and hair dye products, ingredients can permeate through plastic packaging, damaging the and outward appearance of the product.

An internal layer of EVAL™ works as an effective barrier to product permeation and scalping, protecting appearance and extending the effective shelf life and possible distribution time of the product.

102976 EVAL FOLDER COSMETIC.indd 4 2/05/11 17:26 EVAL™ grade selection guide

The widest range of grades

Using Kuraray technology, a variety of EVAL™ grades has been developed specifically for different methods of production and secondary processing of cosmetic packaging. Co-extruded or laminate-based tube, blow moulded bottle or vial, even transparent M 24 mol% thermoformed cup or jar, there is an EVAL™ reference with the perfect balance of required properties. The result is world’s widest available range of EVOH grades. 25

26

EVAL™ M type L 27 mol% has the lowest ethylene content available, and provides the highest barrier for 28 automotive and flexible applications. 29 EVAL™ L type 30 has a very low ethylene content and is suitable as an ultra-high barrier grade in flexible, bottle and sheet applications. 31

32 mol% 5 EVAL™ F type F T J offers superior barrier performance with long-term run stability, and is widely used as 33 the standard grade for blow-moulded and , both co-extruded and laminate- 34 based tubes, as well as flexible and fuel barrier applications. Specific versions exist for and pipe applications. C 35 mol% 36 EVAL™ T type was specially developed to obtain reliable layer distribution in , and has 37 become the industry standard for multilayer sheet and thermoformed flexible applications. H 38 mol% EVAL™ J type 39 offers thermoforming results even superior to those of T, and can be used for unusually 40 deep-draw or sensitive sheet-based applications. 41 EVAL™ C type 42 can be used for high-speed co- and cast flexible applications. 43 EVAL™ H type 44 mol% combines high-barrier properties and long-term run stability and thermoformability. E The higher ethylene content allows easier processing and longer running times on older 45 co-extrusion equipment, especially for blown flexible structures. 46

EVAL™ E type 47 has a higher ethylene content that allows for greater flexibility and even easier processing. G 48 mol% EVAL™ G type 49 has the highest ethylene content, making it the best candidate among standard EVAL™ 50 grades for stretch and shrink film applications.

High gloss and anti-static for exterior use 7

For complete reliability and cost optimisation, the EVAL™ barrier is normally added as a very thin interior layer in a multilayer co-extruded structure. However, there are advantages to using EVAL™ on the exterior of the package as well.

EVAL™ can usually be printed without special surface treatment. It is transparent, and when used on the outer surface of a tube, vial or jar offers an attractive high gloss finish.

Since EVAL™ also has good anti-static properties, external layers also tend to avoid dust build-up when displayed on store shelves.

Although less absolutely reliable than an interior layer, EVAL™ is abrasion resistant and when used outside will still provide barrier properties to the package. For very senisitive formulas, two layers can be used, one for exterior gloss and printability, and the other as an optimised functional barrier layer.

102976 EVAL FOLDER COSMETIC.indd 7 2/05/11 17:26 EVAL™ applications in cosmetic packaging

EVAL™ used in co-extruded tube applications

Co-extruded plastic tubes offer an attractive appearance, avoiding visible back seams. Although flexible and easy to squeeze, they return to their original shape and normally do not require additional external packaging. A thin interior EVAL™ layer provides func- tional barrier properties to the entire structure.

The advantages EVAL™ resins used in tube applications: • Prevent oxygen from penetrating the package and ensures that the substances and the active agents of the are kept inside the package. • Make for an outstanding aroma barrier to prevent the outward diffusion of the perfumes. • Are flexible and easy to squeeze. 8 • Allow very low scalping and permeation of the ingredients. • Provide glossiness when used as an outside layer. • Can be printed with high-quality graphics to increase the visibility and the attractiveness of the package. • All-plastic structure for better appearance, reduced outer packaging, and easier disposal at end of life.

EVAL™ used in flexible applications

Barrier flexible structures are usually used for the production of laminate tubes. Although they have a visible seam, they provide an alternative to co-extruded tubes. Flexible structures can also be used for pouches or inner liners for dispensers, or lami- nated to completely new materials to provide functional barrier to innovative packaging.

The advantages EVAL™ resins used in flexible applications: • Make for an excellent oxygen and fragrance barrier.

102976 EVAL FOLDER COSMETIC.indd 8 2/05/11 17:26 • Ensure preservation of cosmetic agents and fragrances inside the package • Can be left transparent and can be easily printed with high-quality graphics. • Provide reliable barrier properties during processing, filling and transport.

EVAL™ used in blow moulded bottle and vial applications

Cosmetic packaging has to provide product preservation without any loss of quality of the product. Moreover, the quality and attractiveness of the package itself is becoming increasingly important. Cosmetic packaging does not only have to keep oxygen out, it also has to ensure that the active agents of the cosmetics are well preserved inside. Even when the product is in use, the package has to avoid that perfumes or other fragrances alter or lose their performance.

The advantages EVAL™ resins used in bottle applications: • Provide an excellent barrier against oxygen and fragrances. • Offer resistance to the chemical ingredients of the cosmetic products. • Keep the fragrances and the cosmetic agents inside the package, even when the product is in use.

The best way to reduce impact on the environment is to minimise both product and . EVAL™ EVOH resins can help, providing valuable function often while reducing the total amount of packaging. This generates savings by conserving resources, improving efficiency and avoiding waste, often throughout the entire life cycle of the product.
