Abstract The Colombian terrestrial mollusks are poorly known because most of the studies were focus on marine and freshwater mollusks, as a product of that there are actually some taxonomic inventories for those. A list to record the genus of co- lombian terrestrial mollusks was create after intensive collection reviews using Internet and also using specialized biblio- graphy. 80 genus were record distributed in 25 departaments of the country. The checklist is presented including the valid scientific names and their synonymies, also the classification systems that were use and the localities where were genera registry. That work was done under the support of the ABC grants funded by the Alexandre von Humboldt Institute. This list and its additional information was done using Authority Taxonomy Files (AAT for the word in Spanish), an application developed by the biodiversity information system of Colombia (SiB), coordinated also by the Alexander von Humboldt Institute. From the southern Greek Islands, the Peloponnese and the island of Euboea at least three more species need to be described and discriminated from T. totevi. The spermatophores of T. totevi from Bulgaria are described here for the first time, as is an intra-integumental glandular secreting organ of unknown function. The first description of spermatozoa of T. totevi is included. The first photographs of living specimens and the first observations on the behaviour and ecology are provided.

Av. Benavides 5400, Surco. P.O. Box 18-131. Lima, Perú. Abstract: Peru is an ecologically diverse country, with 84 life zones in the Holdridge system and 18 ecological regions (including two marine). 1910 molluscan species have been recorded. The highest number corresponds to the sea: 570 gastropods, 370 bivalves, 36 cephalopods, 34 polyplacoforans, 3 monoplacophorans, 3 scaphopods and 2 aplacophorans (total 1018 species). The most diverse families are Veneridae (57spp.), Muricidae (47spp.), Collumbellidae (40 spp.) and Tellinidae (37 spp.). Biogeographically, 56 % of marine species are Panamic, 11 % Peruvian and the rest occurs in both provinces; 73 marine species are endemic to Peru. Land molluscs include 763 species, 2.54 % of the global estimate and 38 % of the South American esti- mate. The most biodiverse families are Bulimulidae with 424 spp., Clausiliidae with 75 spp. and Systrophiidae with 55 spp. In contrast, only 129 freshwater species have been reported, 35 endemics (mainly hydrobiids with 14 spp. The paper includes an overview of biogeography, ecology, use, history of research efforts and conser- vation; as well as indication of areas and species that are in greater need of study.

New characters on shell, anatomy of soft parts, and a review of the genus distribution in South America, as well as clarification on S. brasiliana distributional area are provided in the present study. Solaropsis brasiliana is diagnosed by its globose, solid, and hirsute shell, with periphery obsoletely angular, bursa copulatrix with a thick, long diverticulum, a thick, long flagellum and a penis retractor muscle forked, with the vas deferens passing through it. This compiled information was used to test the phylogenetic position of S. brasiliana within South American Pleurodontidae through a cladistics analysis. In the phylogenetic hypothesis obtained, S. brasiliana is sister group of S. gibboni (Pfeiffer 1846) and the monophyly of the genus Solaropsis Beck is also supported. Here, we sustain that the distribution of S.

SOME ANATOMICAL, SYSTEMATICAL AND GEOGRAPHICAL DATA ON NENIINAE (GASTROPODA, CLAUSILIIDAE) by F. E. LOOSJES and A. C. W. LOOSJES-VAN BEMMEL Vossenlaan 4, Wageningen, Netherlands (With 38 text-figures and 1 plate) I. INTRODUCTION Up to the moment more than one hundred species and subspecies of Neniinae are known from Central and South America. They are incorporated into 22 genera and subgenera, almost exclusively based on characters of the shells. Only little is known of the anatomy of the animals (Binney, 1871; Binney & Bland, 1871; Baker, 1961; Hesse, 1925; Scott, 1954; Loosjes, 1957; Pilsbry, 1926; Polinski, 1922; Zilch, 1953, 1959). These authors described the radula and/or the genital organs of one or several species. Thus from eleven species the radula has been described and from five the genital apparatus. By the courtesy of Prof. Dr. W. Weyrauch we were able to study the anatomical features of a relatively large number (38) of Peruvian and Argentine Neniinae. We wish to express our most cordial thanks to him for his generosity and also to Dr. B. Hubendick, who provided us with a sample of Nenia tridens (Chemnitz) from Puerto Rico. In Thiele's (1929/31) classification the American Neniinae are grouped into three genera, Nenia, Peruinia and Temesa, based on characters of the shells and of the radula. It turned out impossible to fit the information we found, into this system as it indicates the presence of many more units. In this survey we will follow Zilch's (1960) classification, which enumerates a number of genera and subgenera, based on conchological characters, although the order will be altered according to the results obtained (conf.

Rehder Research Curator, Division of Mollusks Introduction An outstanding patroness of the arts and sciences in eighteenth- century England was Lady Margaret Cavendish Bentinck, Duchess of Portland, wife of William, Second Duke of Portland. At Bulstrode in Buckinghamshire, magnificent summer residence of the Dukes of Portland, and in her London house in Whitehall, Lady Margaret— widow for the last 23 years of her life— entertained gentlemen in- terested in her extensive collection of natural history and objets d'art. Among these visitors were Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander, pupil of Linnaeus. As her own particular interest was in conchology, she received from both of these men many specimens of shells gathered on Captain Cook's voyages. Apparently Solander spent considerable time working on the conchological collection, for his manuscript on descriptions of new shells was based largely on the "Portland Museum." When Lady Margaret died in 1785, her "Museum" was sold at auction. The task of preparing the collection for sale and compiling the sales catalogue fell to the Reverend John Lightfoot (1735-1788). For many years librarian and chaplain to the Duchess and scientif- 1 2 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM vol. 121 ically inclined with a special leaning toward botany and conchology, he was well acquainted with the collection. Recharacterization of 5ynapterpes (5.) hanleyi (Pfeiffer) (Mollusca, Gastropoda, Stylommatophora, Subulinidae) 1 Norma Campos Salgado 2 Arnaldo C. dos Santos Coelho 2 ABSTRACT. Synap/erpes (S) hallleyi (PfeifleI', 1846) is characterized by anatomy, synonymy and geographical distribution. Shell and soft pal1s were studied and impor tanttaxonomic characters evaluated and illustrated. These studies give conditions to characterize the species and include it in the genus Synaplelpes Pilsbly, 1896 and distinguish S hallleyi from the other species of SYllaplerpes S.S. known only by their shells, respectively from Brazil and Colombia: S.(S) corona/us (Pfeiffer, 1846) and S. (S.) wallisi (Mousson, 1869). KEY WORDS. Mollusca, Gastropoda, Stylommatophora, Synaplelpes hanleyi, taxo nomy, conchology, Brazil This article is part of the project on Brazilian landsnails developed by the authors in order to ally what is known about shells with the new data ofjaw, radula and soft parts that increase the species characterizations. In this opportunity it was obtained and studied living material ofSynapterpes hanleyi, described originally as Bulimus Scopoli, 1788 and designated as type-spe cies ofSynapterpes Pilsbry, 1896. MATERIAL AND METHODS Material is deposited in Mollusk Collections ofMuseu Nacional, Universi dade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (MNRJ), Brazil, and Natur-Museum Senckenberg, Frankfurt a.M.
