Studies in Fungi 4(1), 135–141, Doi 10.5943/sif/4/1/16 Abstract Panaeolus acuminatus is described and illustrated based on fresh specimens collected from Northeast Brazil. This is the second known report of this species for the country, since it was already reported in 1930 by Rick. The species is characterized by the acuminate, pileus with hygrophanous surface, basidiospores measuring 11.5–16 × 5.5–11 µm and slender, non-capitate cheilocystidia. A full description accompanies photographs, line drawings and taxonomic discussion. They are propelled off from their basidia at maturity when Buller’s drop develops at high humidity at the hilar spore appendix and fuses with a liquid film formed on the adaxial side of the spore. Spores are catapulted into the free air space between hymenia and fall then out of the mushroom’s cap by gravity. Here we show for 66 different species that ballistospores from mushrooms can be attracted against gravity to electrostatic charged plastic surfaces. Charges on basidiospores can influence this effect. We used this feature to selectively collect basidiospores in sterile plastic Petri-dish lids from mushrooms which were positioned upside-down onto wet paper tissues for spore release into the air. Bulks of 104 to >107 spores were obtained overnight in the plastic lids above the reversed fruiting bodies, between 104 and 106 spores already after 2–4 h incubation. In plating tests on agar medium, we rarely observed in the harvested spore solutions contamina- tions by other fungi (mostly none to up to in 10% of samples in different test series) and infrequently by bacteria (in between 0 and 22% of samples of test series) which could mostly be suppressed by bactericides. We thus show that it is possible to obtain clean basidiospore samples from wild mushrooms. -

O presente projeto teve por objetivo a otimização das condições de cultivo do fungo endofítico Arthrinium state of Apiospora montagnei Sacc. para incrementar a produção de metabólitos secundários com atividades antibacteriana, antifúngica, antiparasitária e antitumoral. O fungo foi cultivado em meio líquido em duas etapas distintas, primeiramente em 200 mL de meio pré-fermentativo de Jackson por 48 horas a 30 °C sob agitação constante (120 rpm), e posteriormente, reinoculando a massa micelial assepticamente obtida na etapa pré-fermentativa, em 400 mL de meio fermentativo Czapek, seguido de reincubação a 30 °C sob agitação constante (120 rpm). Após filtração do fluido da cultura e partição com solventes orgânicos obteve-se os extratos, aceto etílico, butanólico, etanólico e aquoso. A condição de cultivo padrão, cultivo inicial em meio fermentativo Czapek, foi realizada por 20 dias de incubação. Os extratos provenientes desta condição de cultivo foram avaliados quanto às atividades antibacteriana e antifúngica. O extrato aceto etílico apresentou, nesta condição de cultivo, a melhor atividade antibacteriana com concentração inibitória mínima (CIM) de 270 µg/mL para Escherichia coli , não sendo observada atividade antifúngica nestes extratos. -

NORDIC LIBERTY CAP HUNTER’S FIELD GUIDE TO THE READER Magic mushroom photography is an interesting hobby that provides a lot of fun and enlightenment to both beginners and more seasoned photographers. This is a beginner’s guide for people interested in Magic Mushroom photography. The aim is to help the beginner through the sometimes frustrating process of finding your first Magic Mushrooms. While there are several species of Magic Mushrooms growing in the Nordic countries, we concentrate on the one species that is by far the most popular, most common and easiest to identify. This mushroom is Liberty Cap (Psilocybe semilanceata). All the other Magic Mushroom species growing in the region are much more difficult to find and identify. For those more seasoned photographers who want to take their hobby a bit further, there is a huge body of knowledge available about other Magic Mushrooms both in the literature and in the Internet. Magic Mushrooms also have medical and spiritual properties. This might be one of the reasons they are called Magic Mushrooms in the first place. Psilocybin and psilocin are the most effective medication for cluster headache (Horton’s syndrome). They are also a much safer and more effective alternative to toxic psychiatric drugs - pushed by the Big Pharma - that do not heal you but in fact cause even more mental problems. This guidebook does not give instructions on medical, ritual or recreational use of the mushrooms, because these activities are currently prohibited by law in all Nordic countries. Until the Prohibition is repealed, you should stick to photography and other legal mushroom-related activities Possessing, growing and consuming magic mushrooms is currently prohibited by law in all Nordic countries. -

Ray G. Woods, R. Nigel Stringer, Debbie A. Evans and Arthur O. Chater Summary The rust fungi are a group of specialised plant pathogens. Conserving them seems to fly in the face of reason. Yet as our population grows and food supplies become more precarious, controlling pathogens of crop plants becomes more imperative. Breeding resistance genes into such plants has proved to be the most cost effective solution. Such resistance genes evolve only in plants challenged by pathogens. We hope this report will assist in prioritising the conservation of natural ecosystems and traditional agro-ecosystems that are likely to be the richest sources of resistance genes. Despite its small size (11% of mainland Britain) Wales has supported 225 rust fungi taxa (including 199 species) representing 78% of the total British mainland rust species. For the first time using widely accepted international criteria and data collected from a number of mycologists and institutions, a Welsh regional threat status is offered for all native Welsh rust taxa. The results are compared with other published Red Lists for Wales. Information is also supplied in the form of a census catalogue, detailing the rust taxa recorded from each of the 13 Welsh vice-counties. Of the 225 rust taxa so far recorded from Wales 7 are probably extinct (3% of the total), and 39 (18%) are threatened with extinction. Of this latter total 13 taxa (6%) are considered to be Critically Endangered, 15 (7%) to be Endangered and 13 (6%) to be Vulnerable. A further 20 taxa (9%) are Near Threatened, whilst 15 taxa (7%) lacked sufficient data to permit evaluation.
