fter visiting my 50th state last summer, A a friend of mine, Natalie, asked me to help her check some states off her list. Thus, a road trip to New Orleans was born with stops in Alabama and Mississippi on the way. We received recommen- dations from other friends on places to visit that were also new to me, which was exciting. Before checking into our hotel in New Orleans, we stopped at Katie’s, a fam- ily owned neighborhood restaurant and bar in Mid City. After the hardships the owners have faced through the years — death and Hurricane Katrina — we were happy to be able to visit and it was the perfect start to Natalie’s exploration of the city. We discovered this was also a Diners, Dives and Drives locale. We grabbed two seats at the bar and tried a local draft and shared a pizza. As we were leaving Katie’s, the bartender sug- gested the Chart Room in the French Quarter, which was also one of the recommendations we had previously gotten. It is a cool, very laid-back dive bar on Chartres Street that had a single owner for its first 40 years. The bartend- er was not in a hurry, and there were as many locals as tourists there.
