I felt like I was 17 again. It was State Wrestling Tournament and I was so ex- cited, I would have worn my old cheer- Out Back leading outfit if I could have. My friend Lacy and I left for Hays early Saturday Carolyn Plotts morning. We met her mother, Roxie, along the way for breakfast and all three of us went together. I took my handicapped placard along so we could park close. Perhaps if we had arrived at 6 a.m., but coming at noon there was not any kind of close-up parking. So being not only wonderful but wise, Roxie and I had Lacy drop us off at the door and then we waited inside for her. I have always been a high school wrestling fan. If you grew up in western Kan- sas, it was in your blood. Many times the supper table got up-ended when my brothers Dick and Jim held impromptu matches in the kitchen with our mom say- ing, “Boys, boys! Be careful.” My dad would just smile and watch. Back in the day the rivalry between Norton and Oberlin was fierce. The schools were evenly matched and both were powerhouses in wrestling. State titles switched back and forth between the two and other northwest Kansas schools. But, time has changed those things and with decreasing population Oberlin and Norton are no longer in the same league and it didn’t take many years before the old animosities were gone. Still, it was a little hard for me to cheer for Norton...until this year. This year, my friend Lori’s son Darius, was wrestling for the championship and I yelled my heart out. It was almost a year ago that our sweet Lori was a victim of domestic violence. She was the epitome of a wrestling mom. Living and breathing wrestling. Supporting her boy 100 percent.
