The Songmill: Mary Ellen Casey’s Ordinary Day Little Rhody is a tiny state, but I am willing to bet we have more songwriters per capita than any other. Afloat this summer in our vast pool of dedicated and talented singer songwriters is Mary Ellen Casey. Mary Ellen is not new to songwriting. She has been writing and performing for years. Like many local songwriters trying to support themselves or supplement their income, she performs a hearty mix of her own compositions along with well-known songs by nationally known artists. Her latest and second commercially released CD of original music, Ordinary Day, showcases how beautiful and pleasant her original music really is. Similar to the rich vocal styling of Anne Murray, Mary Ellen’s strong, yet smooth voice is perfectly suited for, and carries well, the songs she has selected for this CD. On first listen, the songs appear to be light with very pop memorable and melodic refrains. Digging in deeper, though, you will hear much more. Between the soft lines of her lilting voice lies an undercurrent of deeper meaning – a soul searching for itself. The album, dedicated to her soul mate, leads with an up-tempo number “The Love of Her Life” – a quest for someone looking for, and finding, that special someone. Several cuts in this collection laud those who have stayed together through the thick and the thin of it all and come out shining. Probably the finest song on the album is, “You Love Me Anyway” – a passionate and honest reflection on the strengths, weaknesses and differences that hold a couple near and dear. -

The Joel Katz Story, Part 4: The Music Continues By Charlie Horner With Contributions from Pamela Horner End of an Era: The Passing of Ronnie I The year was 2008, a year that tore the heart out of many of us. It was the year Ronnie I died. Joel Katz and Ronnie I had been working closely together for al- most 30 years. There were times when Ronnie would be over Joel’s Broadway South constantly, recording groups. All told, Ronnie recorded and released approximately 1500 songs with Joel, over the years. They came out on Ronnie’s Clifton, UGHA and Ronnie label 45’s EP’s LP’s and CD’s. And those were just the songs that were re- leased. There are probably just as many recorded songs still unreleased. But Ronnie I and Joel Katz were more than just business partners. They were close friends and Joel took Ronnie’s passing very hard. Joel and the Clif- tonaires visited Ronnie the day before he died. “We just said goodbye to him,” Joel recalled. By coaching an unrivaled stable of politicians over the course of fifty years, Ailes heavily influenced Republican politics, steering the conservative movement from Nixon, to the Tea Party, to Trump. Under his tutelage, anger and fear became the coin of the realm, both on the ballot and on national television. Diagnosed with hemophilia at an early age, it took someone intimate with fear to skillfully manipulate the fear of others. With Rupert Murdoch behind him, Roger Ailes started Fox News and turned it into a money- making juggernaut, with profits exceeding those of all its rivals combined. He discarded notions of traditional journalism and turned prime time television into flame-throwing TV. Short skirts and low necklines mesmerized his audience and, as long as Fox made money, there was little oversight of his fiefdom. But the carnival house mirror Ailes put up to America reflected his own distorted personal life. This is a story of serial cruelty, both on the public stage and in private life. -

RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT EPK RE:GENERATION Song By Song The RE:GENERATION MUSIC PROJECT, produced in association with The GRAMMYs® and presented by Hyundai Veloster, examines the history of different music through the eyes of five of the most influential electronic producer/DJ’s in music today. For the project, Mark Ronson, DJ Premier, The Crystal Method, Pretty Lights and Skrillex each take a specific musical style and explore it by writing and recording a brand new track with a grouping of influential collaborators in that genre. SKRILLEX hit a Los Angeles studio with Members of The Doors in order to re-envision rock 'n' roll on "Breakn' a Sweat.” Meanwhile, THE CRYSTAL METHOD touched down in Detroit to work with Martha Reeves of The Vandellas and The Funk Brothers on an R&B number entitled "I'm Not Leaving.” Then there's MARK RONSON's southern brew of New Orleans jazz, "A La Modeliste," boasting a veritable all-star cast: Erykah Badu, Trombone Shorty, Mos Def, Zigaboo Modeliste and Members of The Dap Kings. What Is Blues Dancing? Shaped by the African
Blues Dancing and its African American ROOTS WHAT IS BLUES DANCING? “Blues dance” is a new name describing a family of dances done to blues music and created within African American communites. Writng in the 1970s, African American jazz critc Albert Murray was the frst to categorize these dances as “blues-idiom.” Murray’s descripton of reactons to blues music—spontaneity, improvisaton, and control—applies to blues dance as well. SHAPED BY THE AFRICAN AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Despite enslavers’ atempts to eradicate African Americans’ heritage, African roots persist and are evident in blues music and dance characteristcs such as layering rhythms, emphasis on improvisaton, and a call and response format. Lyrics and music express everyday life experiences, ofen refectng themes of hardship, from racism and poverty to personal relatonships. Learning by watching and copying, as well as valuing innovaton and creaton of an individual’s unique personal style within the given aesthetc, is also part of the cultural traditon. Music and movement for African Americans during enslavement was ofen limited to actvites such as Christan prayer meetngs, work chants, and entertainment for plantaton owners. Afer emancipaton, African Americans gradually had more freedom to gather, play music, and dance on their own. Field hands in the South socialized in juke joints, small shacks where beer and liquor were sold, one or two local musicians played, and people danced. In Northern cites during the Great Migraton of the 1920s, middle-class blues and jazz musicians and dancers gathered in small apartments for occasions like rent partes. African Americans danced—and contnue to dance—on front porches and street corners, and in homes, back rooms of restaurants, community centers, and ballrooms. -
