The distribution of large mammals in Southern Rhodesia is imperfectly known and this paper aims at a preliminary assessment of the geographical ranges occupied by most large species found in the territory. In their discussions on distribution, Roberts (1951) and Ellerman et al. (1953) include Southern Rhodesia as part of a larger geographical region, and Fraser (1958), who restricted himself to Southern Rhodesia, discussed the problem in general terms The rapid increase of interest in wild life in Southern Rhodesia during the last three years, both for its aesthetic and commercial values, has led to a demand for a better understanding of its distribution. It was with this need in mind that the present survey was undertaken as a joint project by the National Museums of Southern Rhodesia, the Department of National Parks and Wild Life Management and the Natural Resources Board. Based on questionnaires and supplementary data, and with the limited personnei ·- and time available, it was realised that the survey would have limitations, but it is hoped that it will stimulate further research into this important basis for wild life work within the territory. METHODS Eight thousand questionnaires were distributed to land holders and Government personnel responsible for the administration of rural areas in June, 1961. Every effort was made to obtain as wide a coverage as possible of the whole of Southern Rhodesia. Information requested included an indication of which species were resident in, or only occasional visitors to, the area covered by the questionnaire. The distribu· tional data was plotted on outline maps of Southern Rhodesia, using a quarter degree square grid in which lines were spaced at 30 minute intervals both longitudinally and -· latitudinally. Even on this scale, a number of questionnaires covered more than one square, especially in underdeveloped areas. In Fig. l, question­ naires, reporting on more than one square, have been indicated in all the squares with which they deal. After the data on the l,454 questionnaires which were returned (18 per cent) had been analysed, additional information was sought from those areas for which there was inadequate coverage. Here the results of tsetse fly control hunting schemes and records from game rescue operations on Lake Kariba (Fig. 2) were of great value. In addition, the authors and field staff of the Department of National Parks and Wild Life Management paid particular attention to populations in given areas. I~ 16 27~ ll' ll' FIQ.2 3 No attempt was made to ascertain the status or trends within populations in the various areas and discretion was exercised in the treatment of species which, in any one square, were only recorded as "occasional visitors". In the case of species with localised habits, their indication as occasional visitors in the area represented by a square would suggest they were rare or secretive, while the phrase is appropriate for species which may move about a great deal. Little is, however, known of the move· ments of most species in Southern Rhodesia and arbitrary decisions have had to be made as to their treatment where they were only indicated as occasional visitors. The grid system used in this paper js based on that of the Federal Survey Depart· ment's I :1,000,000 map. Distribution squares which only just reach into the borders of Southern Rhodesia are frequently ignored. Selected rivers are named in Fig. 2, to which other maps may be referred. Common names applied to species are those normally used locally, while the scien­ tific nomenclature and the systematic arrangement of species follow Ellerman et al. (1953). RESULTS Vervet Monkey, Cercopithecus aethiops K/15 was the only square from which vervet monkeys were not recorded, but it is to be expected that the species would be present along the Sabi River and its tribu­ taries, in this area. Samango Monkey, Cercopithecus mitis Samango monkey was not included on the questionnaires in order to avoid con· fusion with the last species. The samango is limited to areas of forest along the eastern border mountains, where it probably has a distribution similar to that of the blue duiker (See Fig. 14). Baboon, Papio ursinus (Fig. 3) Baboons occur over most of the country, but are rare or absent in woodland on heavy Kalahari sand. This may account for their not having been recorded from H/3 and 4 and J/3 to 6. The lack of reports from other areas was probably due to the low number of returns from these areas. Wild Dog, Lycaon pictus Wild dog are sparse but widespread over most of the territory, especially in unde· veloped areas in the north and south. They were excluded from the questionnaire becaused it was belieyed a biased picture of their distribution might be given as a result of the prejudice against this species. Brown Hyaena, Hyaena brunnea Brown hyaena are rare and the species was probably confused with the spotted hyaena on a number of questionnaires. Their distribution, based on collected material, has been described by Ansell (1961). Converted to the system of plotting used in this < paper, their presence has been established in G/3, H/8, L/6, 7 and 9, and M/6. Spotted Hyaena, Crocuta crocuta (Fig. 4) Spotted hyaena are v1:idespread but apparently absent from a number of areas. A1tbough this may be ascribed to their nocturnal habits and extreme secretiveness when persecuted, coupled with a low return of questionnaires from some areas, the lack of reports from around Gwelo and Salisbury probably reflects a gap in the range of the species. "Baboon Fl!l 3 Spotted Hyena Fi11- 4 Leopard, Panthera pardus Leopard were reported from all areas except E/8, G/7, J/10 and N/8. These are all localities from which there was a low return of questionnaires. Lion, Panthera leo (Fig. 5) Lion are mainly restricted to the border areas, but it is clear from reports that lion may occur, at least temporarily, in many adjacent areas. Cheetah, Acinonyx jubatus (Fig. 6) Cheetah are reported to have a wide but patchy distribution. The unevenness of the distribution may, in part, result from the irregularity with which the species is con­ tacted, even in areas where fairly well represented. ' I ' ' . I . Elephant, Loxodonta africana (Fig. 7) Elephant are most common in the Za111bezi Valley, the southern lowveld and in the Wank.ie National Park and its vicinity. Reports of occasional observations of lone animals and small groups of this conspicuous species came from many adjoining areas. Black Rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis (Fig. 8) Black rhino are now limited to the Zambezi Valley and a relict population in the Sabi Valley, although it is evident from Selous (1908) that the species once had a much ·wider range. Recently black rhino from the Kariba Lake basin have been re-introduced into the Wankie Naticmal Park, G/3, and into the Matopos National Park, L/7.

Dutton This account of the national parks, reserves and other places worthy of pro- tection in Mozambique gives some idea of the wealth of wildlife in this newly independent country. One special reserve has 25,000 buffaloes—the largest concentration in the world. Protected conservation areas in Mozambique fall into six categories: 1. Parques nacionais - national parks; 2. Reservas especiais - special game reserves; 3. Reservas parciais - partial reserves; 4. Regimen de vigilancia - fauna protection zones; 5. Coutadas - hunting and photographic safari areas, normally run on a private concession basis; 6. Reservas florestais - forest reserves. Some unique areas are still outside this system but have been recommended for inclusion, together with other ecosystems worthy of inclusion in the future. Game farming or ranching is attracting considerable interest; one private and one government scheme have been proposed. NATIONAL PARKS 1.* Parque Nacional da Gorongosa (c. 3770 sq km). Situated at the southern limit of the great rift valley with an extensive flood plain and associated lakes, this park includes Brachystegia woodland Acacia and Combretum savanna. Sharply rising inselbergs (volcanic protrusions) are also a feature. The ungulates are typical floodplain species, including elephant (abundant), buffalo, wildebeest, waterbuck, zebra, reedbuck, impala and oribi; on the elevated woodland and savanna habitat there are black rhino, eland, Lichten- stein's hartebeest, sable, kudu, nyala, Sharpe's grysbok, suni, blue and grey duiker, and klipspringer are common on rock outcrops; lion, leopard and hippopotamus are abundant. Both land and water birds are prolific and diverse, and crocodiles are very common.

ABSTRACT The field of conservation genetics, in combination with non-invasive sampling, provides a powerful set of tools for investigating the conservation status and natural history of rare species that are otherwise difficult to study. A systematic literature review demonstrated that this is certainly the case for many forest- associated antelope species, which are poorly studied and yet constitute some of the most heavily hunted wildlife in Africa. The aim of the present study was to use non-invasive sampling to investigate genetic patterns in forest antelope populations in the high-biodiversity Udzungwa Mountains, Tanzania, within the context of the conservation of these species and the wider ecosystem. Genetic information was derived from faecal samples collected across the Udzungwa landscape and assigned to five antelope species (N = 618, collected 2006-09). Faecal pellet length was measured for a subset of samples but statistical assignment to species by this method proved unreliable.

They also make up a large proportion of emerging infectious diseases. (2) Methods: A scoping review of peer-reviewed publications was performed and based on the guidelines set out in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) extension for scoping reviews. (3) Results: The final set of publications consisted of 145 publications. Thirty-two viruses were identified in the publications and 50 African ungulates were reported/diagnosed with viral infections. Eighteen countries had viruses diagnosed in wild ungulates reported in the literature. (4) Conclusions: A comprehensive review identified several areas where little information was available and recommendations were made. It is recommended that governments and research institutions offer more funding to investigate and report viral diseases of greater clinical and zoonotic significance. A further recommendation is for appropriate One Health approaches to be adopted for investigating, controlling, managing and preventing diseases. Diseases which may threaten the conservation of certain wildlife species also require focused attention.

    The red lechwe of Busanga Plain, Zambia a conservation success G. W. Howard and H. N. Chabwela When the Kafue National Park was established in 1950 the northern boundary was drawn to include the Busanga Plain, where there was a small population of red lechwe, much reduced by hunting. The effect of the protection was striking: numbers began to increase immediately and by 1973 there were 2000 individuals. In 1985 the authors conducted censuses to establish how the antelopes had fared in the intervening years. Their findings reveal just how successful the conservation measures have been. The red lechwe Kobus leche leche is the most that part of Busanga Plain occupied by red widespread of the three subspecies of lechwe lechwe. This population had been reduced by antelope in central-southern Africa. While the hunting to just over 100 animals at that time black lechwe K /. smithemani is now confined to (Grimsdell and Bell, 1972), and it was hoped that the Bangweulu Swamps, and the Kafue lechwe the protection afforded by national park status K. /. kafuensis to the central Kafue Flats, the red would allow the lechwe to regain their former lechwe is still likely to be present in southern numbers.     CAMPAIGN TO BAN TROPHY HUNTING Special Report The U.K. hunter who has shot more wildlife than the killer of Cecil the Lion SUMMARY The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting is revealing the identity of a British man who has killed wild animals in 5 continents, and is considered to be among the world’s ‘elite’ in the global trophy hunting industry. Malcolm W King has won a staggering 36 top awards with Safari Club International (SCI), and has at least 125 entries in SCI’s Records Book. The combined number of animals required for the awards won by King is 528. Among his awards are prizes for shooting African ‘Big Game’, wild cats, and bears. King has also shot wild sheep, goats, deer and oxen around the world. His exploits have taken him to Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, as well as across Europe. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting estimates that around 1.7 million animals have been killed by trophy hunters over the past decade, of which over 200,000 were endangered species. Lions are among those species that could be pushed to extinction by trophy hunting. An estimated 10,000 lions have been killed by ‘recreational’ hunters in the last decade. Latest estimates for the African lion population put numbers at around 20,000, with some saying they could be as low as 13,000. Industry groups like Safari Club International promote prizes which actively encourage hunters to kill huge numbers of endangered animals. The Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting believes that trophy hunting is an aberration in a civilised society.

Stoeger1* Abstract Background: Recent research reveals that giraffes (Giraffa camelopardalis sp.) exhibit a socially structured, fission– fusion system. In other species possessing this kind of society, information exchange is important and vocal com- munication is usually well developed. But is this true for giraffes? Giraffes are known to produce sounds, but there is no evidence that they use vocalizations for communication. Reports on giraffe vocalizations are mainly anecdotal and the missing acoustic descriptions make it difficult to establish a call nomenclature. Despite inconclusive evidence to date, it is widely assumed that giraffes produce infrasonic vocalizations similar to elephants. In order to initiate a more detailed investigation of the vocal communication in giraffes, we collected data of captive individuals during day and night. We particularly focussed on detecting tonal, infrasonic or sustained vocalizations. Findings: We collected over 947 h of audio material in three European zoos and quantified the spectral and tem- poral components of acoustic signals to obtain an accurate set of acoustic parameters. Besides the known burst, snorts and grunts, we detected harmonic, sustained and frequency-modulated “humming” vocalizations during night recordings. None of the recorded vocalizations were within the infrasonic range.
