Undergraduate Programme Secretariat Preamble The University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated several measures to bring equity, efficiency and excellence in the Higher Education System of country. The important measures taken to enhance academic standards and quality in higher education include innovation and improvements in curriculum, teaching-learning process, examination and evaluation systems, besides governance and other matters. The UGC has formulated various regulations and guidelines from time to time to improve the higher education system and maintain minimum standards and quality across the Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) in India. The academic reforms recommended by the UGC in the recent past have led to overall improvement in the higher education system. However, due to lot of diversity in the system of higher education, there are multiple approaches followed by universities towards examination, evaluation and grading system. While the HEIs must have the flexibility and freedom in designing the examination and evaluation methods that best fits the curriculum, syllabi and teaching–learning methods, there is a need to devise a sensible system for awarding the grades based on the performance of students. -

CHAIRMAN: Hon. Members, I refer with profound sorrow to the passing away of Shri Khamsum Namgyal Pulger, Shri S.B. Ramesh Babu, Shri Rishang Keishing, former Members of this House, Shri Arjan Singh, Marshal of the Indian Air Force, Shri Jayantilal Barot, Shri Makhan Lal Fotedar, Shri Gaya Singh, Dr. Ishwar Chandra Gupta, Shri Mirza Irshadbaig and Shri Sukomal Sen, former Members of this House. Shri Khamsum Namgyal Pulger passed away on the 7th of July, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Born in October, 1926 at Darjeeling in West Bengal, Shri Pulger was educated at the St. Roberts School, Darjeeling. A social worker, Shri Khamsum Namgyal Pulger represented the State of Sikkim in this House for a brief period, from the 20th of October, 1987, to the 1st of March, 1988. ___________________________________________________ This Synopsis is not an authoritative record of the proceedings of the Rajya Sabha. 1 Shri S.B. Ramesh Babu passed away on the 27th July, 2017, at the age of 68 years. Born in February, 1949 at Hyderabad in Telangana, Shri Ramesh Babu was educated at the Badruka College of Arts and Commerce and the Law College, Osmania University at Hyderabad. An advocate and social worker, Shri Ramesh Babu was active in sports and other extra curricular activities during his student days. He worked for the upliftment of the weaker and downtrodden sections of the society. He served as the President and Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Coordination Council and as President of several employees associations. -

The beginning of writing system in Bengali within the emergence of writing culture in India is addressed to start with. The followed by a discussion on the language family of the Indian sub-continent and Indo- Aryan family of languages to which Bengali belongs to. The subsequent three parts deal with Old Bengali, Middle Bengali & Modern Bengali phases of the language. Rather than discussing the features only, we plan to introduce some texts of the said periods. Classic Poetry Series Ishwar Chandra Gupta - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Ishwar Chandra Gupta(March 1812 - 23 January 1859) Ishwar Chandra Gupta was an Indian Bengali poet and writer. Gupta was born in the village Kanchanpalli or Kanchrapara, 24 Parganas district (currently in North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India). <b>Early Life</b> Ishwar Chandra Gupta was brought up in his uncle's house after the death of his mother. Gupta spent most of his childhood in Kolkata. At that time, poets were named Kobiwala and the kobiwalas were not so civilized in language. Sexual words and clashes were common. But Ishwar Chandra Gupta created a different style of poetry. He started the newspaper Sambad Prabhakar with Jogendra Mohan Tagore on on January 28, 1831. which finally became a daily on June 4, 1839. Many Bengali writers of the 19th century started their career with that magazine. He reintroduced into Bengali poetry the mediaeval style with double meaning (already seen in Sandhyakaranandi and Bharatchandra): "Ke bole Ishwar Gupta, byapta charachar, Jahar prabhaye prabha paye Prabhakar.." 'Ishwar' means God, 'Gupta' means hidden and 'Prabhakar' is the a translation runs: "Who says God is hidden? He is omnipresent From Him the Sun gets its luminescence." Also, Ishwar (Chandra) Gupta ran the journal 'Prabhakar'. So a second meaning of the poem, making a tongue-in-cheek reference to the author, runs: "Who says Ishwar (Gupta) is hidden? His reach touches the world For his brilliance makes the Prabhakar luminiscent." <b>Literary Style</b> He brought modern era of poetry in Bengali. -

CIKITUSI JOURNAL FOR MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH ISSN NO: 0975-6876 Triangular love in the Novel of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay Tumtum Mukherjee, Assistant Professor in Bengali, Bankura Zilla Saradamani Mahila Mahavidyapith, Bankura-722101 Abstract This part is about the principal novel composed by an Indian in English, Rajmohan's Wife (1864) by Bankimchandra Chatterjee, who was likewise India's, positively Bengal's, first significant author. Sutanuka Ghosh 3 Abstract History seldom tells the story of ordinary men far less ordinary women. This thesis explores the tales of ordinary middle class Hindu Bengali women and their different experiences of the period 1930-1955 through fiction written by women. To undermine the logic of colonialism the Indian nationalist movement had sought to project an image of a modern, progressive, egalitarian society while also holding on to its distinctive cultural identity. The fulfilment of these twin objectives hinged on Indian women. Consequently Bengali women found themselves negotiating different objectives that required them to be ‘modern’ as well as patient, self-sacrificing, pure and faithful like Sita. -

Email: [email protected] Abstract Women’s travel writing in Bengal proliferated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century through the popular form of serialized publications in journals such as Bharati (1877), Dasi (1892), Prabasi (1901), among others. However, to perceive this rich output of travel literature as a single, homogenous genre would be fallacious. Travel writing in this time undergoes several generic modifications as it journeys through the turn of the century. Through my paper I would like to trace these shifts within Bengali women’s travel narrative using the stretch of aryavarta as the anchoring landscape. From Prasannamae Debi in 1888 to Nanibala Ghosh in 1933, these travellers from Bengal travel to the north and north-west regions of India, mapping the same landscape but within diverse narrative frameworks, and in so doing, dramatically (and one could argue deliberately) alter the land they wish to represent. Their subjective position as women writers further inform and complicate their work, as do the contemporary political framework of the time they respectively inhabit. -
