Lithuanian Commemorative Coins Coin dedicated to the Hill of Crosses THE HILL OF CROSSES Throughout the centuries, the Lithuanian cross-crafting tradition has become a unique form of art and folk piety, and thus was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It includes not only crosses and wayside shrines erected near farmsteads, on roadsides, in cemeteries, forests or churchyards, but also their clusters, i.e. various hills of crosses, nearly 30 of which can be found in Lithuania. The largest and world-famous one is situated near Šiauliai on the Castle Hill of Jurgaičiai (Domantai) and is called the Hill of Crosses. The history of the Hill of Crosses, as well as of cross-crafting as a whole, is very complex. Although it is unclear when exactly the first crosses were placed, some believe that it started in the 14–15th centuries, while only 19th-century records provide us with more specific information. A significant number of crosses were placed on the Hill during the uprisings of 1831 and 1863. There is certain evidence that it served as a place for burying rebels and performing executions. Only a sparse amount of written 19th-century sources has survived to this day. They include the Šiauliai economy treasurer Maurycy Hryszkiewicz’s 1850 Šiauliai Economy Manor Inventory (listing around 20 crosses), the archaeologist Fyodor Pokrovsky’s 1899 Map of the Archaeological Monuments of Kaunas Province and Ludwik Krzywicki’s book Żmudż Starożytna (Ancient Samogitia) published in 1906. There were also a number of attempts to count the crosses: in 1850, there were 20 crosses, in 1900 – around 130, in 1902 – 155, while in 1914 – 200 crosses and a chapel. -

Jacek Kulbaka DOi: 10.14746/bhw.2018.38.2 Maria Grzegorzewska University From the history of disabilities (16th-19th century) Abstract: The article presents various circumstances (social, legal, philosophical and scientific) connected with the care, upbringing and education of people with disabilities from the early modern era to the beginning of the 20th century. Particular attention was to the history of people with disa- bilities in the Polish lands. The author tried to recall the activity of leading educational activists, ped- agogues and scientists – animators of special education in Poland, Europe and the world. The text also contains information related to the activities of educational and upbringing institutions (institu- tional, organisational, methodological and other aspects). International Research in Early Childhood Education 5 Vol. 7, No. 1, 2016 Finding the “prism”: Understanding Vygotsky’s perezhivanie as an ontogenetic unit of child consciousness Michael Michell University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia Abstract The concept of perezhivanie, Vygotsky’s “last word” on psychology, has been among the most difficult of his theoretical constructs to define and operationalise in research. Drawing on close analysis of key texts, this article identifies and examines three defining attributes of perezhivanie found throughout Vygotsky’s works. The attributes are: perezhivanie as a prism of psychological development, as a unit of human consciousness, and as intelligent perception of one’s environment. In contrast with common understandings of perezhivanie as “emotional experience”, privileging it as affect, this article highlights the intellectual basis of perezhivanie in Vygotsky’s writings with particular reference to his notions of “generalised” and “intelligent perception”. The article argues that perezhivanie is best understood, psychologically, as an intellectual gestalt reflecting the intellectualisation of perception and, ontologically, as an apperceptual “organ of selection” of consciousness and personality “refracting” the child’s individual social situation of development. Despite the fact that these two women lived in different countries and came from to- tally different cultural backgrounds, they fought for a better future for women. Both Irena Krzywicka and Hiratsuka Raichō lived during a difficult time of war and were witnesses to dynamic political and social changes in their respective countries. As in historical terms, this was the very beginning of feminist move- ment, both in Poland and Japan, their lives and activities fall within the period of the first wave of feminism. Over the years, increased activism has re- sulted in the regulation of women’s rights in various areas of life. Activities such as the fight for gender equality, marriage, motherhood, birth control, pacifism, and gaining the right to participate in political life intensified. As women began to unite, support each other and set up various char- ity organisations and trade unions, they became politically active. ARCHIVE* In the interwar years, social sciences developed in East Central Europe along with nation-states and their increasingly apparent weaknesses. Polish sociolo- gists of the period, whose intellectual formation dated back to the last decades of the European empires, coped with the challenges of their time and commented on modern ideologies, mass movements, sudden social dislocations, and economic depressions. Stefan Czarnowski (1879–1937), a member of the Durkheim school and a disciple of Henri Hubert (1872–1927) and Marcel Mauss (1872–1950), was one of them. Lev Vygotsky: Philologist and Defectologist, A Sociointellectual Biography1 ANTON YASNITSKY York University Among the pioneers of psychology, Lev Vygotsky (1896-1934) may be the best known of those who are least understood. This is not just a problem of historical scholarship: The misunderstanding of Vygotsky started with his own students and collaborators—during his lifetime—and continued after his death. It is, in other words, integrated into the litera ture. And that literature, as a result, appears fractured and inconsistent. Indeed, the larg est and the best intellectual biography of Vygotsky is titled Understanding Vygotsky: A Quest for Synthesis (van der Veer & Valsiner, 1991). Yet even this excellent book is far from providing a full and complete story. The dis covery of the real Vygotsky is still to come. Figure 7.1 Lev Vygotsky, 1925. There are many reasons for systematic misunderstanding—even misrepresenta tion. Among them we can include Vygotsky's changes in theoretical outlook; his premature death at the age of 37, when he was in the middle of the most prolific period of his career; the lack of public access to manuscripts and documents in the Vygotsky archives; problems of posthumous editing; and the censorship of his works published in the Soviet Union, the effects of which were in turn multiplied 109 rui i wn YAsni i br\Y LEV VYGOTSKY 111 by mistakes that accumulated in Western translations (Yasnitsky, 2010; van der conferences" to coordinate their research. Being, Becoming and Potential Thinking coproduction and coexistence in early childhood education Suzan Ann Mentha ORCID: 0000-0001-9475-7677 Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2016 Melbourne Graduate School of Education The University of Melbourne Abstract This thesis explores how disparate ideas of being, becoming and agency can be re- framed to decolonise early childhood education and care contexts. It asks questions of multiple childhood perspectives to denaturalise accepted and dominating early childhood discourses. It does so by pursuing a variegated understanding nested within three questions. First, what ideas of childhood and development compel and inspire the framing of educational objectives in current policy contexts of Australian early childhood reform? Second, what can contemporary challenges to the nature of subjectivity offer for rethinking assumptions of being, agency and development in early childhood? The third asks, what non-dominating perspec- tives reframe ideas of becoming and potential within the context of early childhood education and care? In addressing these questions, the thesis draws on humanist, post-humanist and postcolonial theory, Indigenous and early childhood policy to examine intersections of childhood and being as colonised subject. Theoretically this thesis grounds itself in critical ontology, emerging through a range of theories on concepts of governmentality, power relations, self and sub- jectivity. Foundations of critical ontology are challenged by ideas of colonised- coloniser relationships, processes of subjectification and their relationship to the child. This positions the study's contribution to emerging postcolonial reframing of early childhood education. Methodologically, the thesis utilises an approach drawing from interpretive, deconstructive and critical methodologies of education. -

Danuta Walczak-Duraj* Abstract While attempting to answer a question in the title of this paper !rst of all, basic intentions that inspired to formulate such a topic should be explained. "e bottom line is whether in the re#ections of representatives of sociology of work or sociology of economy, referring to contextual perception and analysis of labour relations in Poland, some focus should be put on the issues concerning rede!ning the essence and content of work ethos, or rather on an analysis of a set of factors, both of endogenic and exogenous nature, which contribute to a broadly understood counter-ideology of work. "erefore, this paper presents an attempt to indicate twofold types of phenomena and processes; on the one hand, those that in#uence a process of individualization and fragmentation of work ethos in Poland; on the other one, those which a$ect content of major motivation and interpretation schemes mentioned by employees, which may become presumptions to the development of counter-ideology of work. In such circumstances, a role of work ethos in creating economic harmony, which is a special case of axionormative harmony, decreases signi!cantly and loses its explicitly social character while increasingly becoming only one of dimensions of individual identity, professional biography or a personality pro!le of an individual. -
