Acta 114.Indd ARCHIVE* In the interwar years, social sciences developed in East Central Europe along with nation-states and their increasingly apparent weaknesses. Polish sociolo- gists of the period, whose intellectual formation dated back to the last decades of the European empires, coped with the challenges of their time and commented on modern ideologies, mass movements, sudden social dislocations, and economic depressions. Stefan Czarnowski (1879–1937), a member of the Durkheim school and a disciple of Henri Hubert (1872–1927) and Marcel Mauss (1872–1950), was one of them. As was the case with a number of his colleagues, Czarnowski for most of his life willingly assumed the role of a public intellectual, publishing essays or commentaries in Tygodnik Polski (1911–12) and, after the Second World War, in Kurier Polski and Robotnik (to name but two). His involvement in public affairs directly inspired his article on ‘Redundant People in the Service of Violence’ (1935), a translation of which is published in this issue. Admittedly, the evolution of Czarnowski’s own political views was quite thorough. Connected as a young man with the Association of the Polish Youth ‘ZET’ (National Democracy’s youth organisation), he subsequently joined a ‘Secesja’ group which in 1911 left the ranks of the National Demo- crats as a token of protest against Roman Dmowski’s pro-Russian policy. During the Great War, Czarnowski supported the political line pursued by Władysław Sikorski and the Austrian-affi liated wing of the Polish Legions, with which he served as a recruitment offi cer. During the Polish-Bolshevik war, he commanded a Polish infantry unit and, in this capacity, took part in heavy combat operations in Ukraine. In the 1920s, disillusioned with the political situation of the time, he declared himself a resolute opponent of National Democracy; yet, he was not an adherent of Józef Piłsudski’s politics – particu- larly regarding the Coup of May 1926 and the Sanacja regime.5 As he wrote in September 1928 to Marcel Mauss, “Mussolini and Primo de Rivera would have been enough for me. The atmosphere in Poland is becoming stifl ing.”6 In 1929, Czarnowski joined the Polish Socialist Party (PPS). While he never before had been on close terms with this organisation, he did this as a gesture of support for the parliamentary opposition when their confron- tation with the government camp had grown more and more strained. There he criticised the democratic and parliamentary ideals of the Party, arguing that its policy only favoured the bourgeoisie, who sought “a system in which the working masses would be completely dependent upon the possessing classes: namely, Fascism.” According to Czarnowski “Economic nationalism generates favourable conditions for [fascism’s] development: the bourgeoisie have the infl exible will to bring it about. … Should the proletariat be entertained merely with ballot pranks and arbitration procedures; should they continuously be rocked to sleep by the opportunistic policies of the Second International – then, what is threatening them is an awakening in fetters from which they will not get liberated for a whole century.”8 Hence, the communist movement was for Czarnowski a real option against fascism. He kept in touch with members of the Communist Party of Poland (KPP), though the nature of his association with this organisation has remained unclear.9 In June 1933, he took part in a European Anti-Fascist Congress in Paris. Also, he pledged support for forming a people’s front to resist the radical rightist parties on their way to seize power, a policy proposed by the Seventh Congress of the Communist International.10 His relationship with the com- munists was facilitated by a reorientation of his scholarly outlook: he had made Marxism part of his own research method. At Warsaw University, he acted as a mentor to the ‘socialist youth’ group, alongside his activities as promoter of student research on the conditions of labour and life among the young generation in Poland. Outside the University, he lectured for printers and workers,11 and he established contacts with left-wing teachers as a co-founder of the Society for Democratic Education ‘Nowe Tory’ (‘New Track’), a tutor of graduation theses with the State Institute of Teachers, and a member of the Polish Teachers’ Association. It was in this periodical that his essay on ‘redundant people’ [original title, Ludzie zbędni w służbie przemocy] was originally published.12 In his essay, Czarnowski applied a comparative method typical of his academic outlook, inspired by his former collaboration with Henri Hubert. Rather than for the sake of fl aunting erudition, the essay referred to various historical examples in order to derive a universal societal phenomenon on the basis of those examples. Czarnowski argued for the general existence of groups who were not fi rmly anchored in the social structure and were easy to mobilise for violent actions. Then he made a reference to the situation of his contemporary Poland in order to demonstrate how dangerous the jobless people were for public life – in his opinion, they were easy meat for the radical Right. The threat of fascism, intertwined with the effects of the Great Depression, was, according to Czarnowski, reinforced in Poland owing to specifi c institu- tional solutions. The essay’s important subtext was his reaction to the reforms in the sectors of insurance and education, which were intensely disputed at the time. The social insurance law adopted in 1933 unifi ed the formerly diverse legislation of Russia, Germany (Prussia) and Austria, into a consistent legal regime. Yet, this ‘consolidating law’ was enacted when the economic crunch was at its hardest. Insurance against unemployment among industrial workers was not covered by the act, probably for fear of fi nancial incapacity in the responsible insurance institution. The measures undertaken in view of alleviat- ing the effects of unemployment were designed as a separate instrument of governmental administration and were still covered by separate and insuffi cient legislation passed in 1924:13 a solution that outraged Czarnowski.

    Lithuanian Commemorative Coins Coin dedicated to the Hill of Crosses THE HILL OF CROSSES Throughout the centuries, the Lithuanian cross-crafting tradition has become a unique form of art and folk piety, and thus was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It includes not only crosses and wayside shrines erected near farmsteads, on roadsides, in cemeteries, forests or churchyards, but also their clusters, i.e. various hills of crosses, nearly 30 of which can be found in Lithuania. The largest and world-famous one is situated near Šiauliai on the Castle Hill of Jurgaičiai (Domantai) and is called the Hill of Crosses. The history of the Hill of Crosses, as well as of cross-crafting as a whole, is very complex. Although it is unclear when exactly the first crosses were placed, some believe that it started in the 14–15th centuries, while only 19th-century records provide us with more specific information. A significant number of crosses were placed on the Hill during the uprisings of 1831 and 1863. There is certain evidence that it served as a place for burying rebels and performing executions. Only a sparse amount of written 19th-century sources has survived to this day. They include the Šiauliai economy treasurer Maurycy Hryszkiewicz’s 1850 Šiauliai Economy Manor Inventory (listing around 20 crosses), the archaeologist Fyodor Pokrovsky’s 1899 Map of the Archaeological Monuments of Kaunas Province and Ludwik Krzywicki’s book Żmudż Starożytna (Ancient Samogitia) published in 1906. There were also a number of attempts to count the crosses: in 1850, there were 20 crosses, in 1900 – around 130, in 1902 – 155, while in 1914 – 200 crosses and a chapel.

Despite the fact that these two women lived in different countries and came from to- tally different cultural backgrounds, they fought for a better future for women. Both Irena Krzywicka and Hiratsuka Raichō lived during a difficult time of war and were witnesses to dynamic political and social changes in their respective countries. As in historical terms, this was the very beginning of feminist move- ment, both in Poland and Japan, their lives and activities fall within the period of the first wave of feminism. Key words: Hiratsuka Raichō, Irena Krzywicka, Poland, Japan, feminism, mar- riage, motherhood, women’s activism INTRODUCTION At the beginning of the 20th century, a trend towards women gaining emancipation became visible, one which enabled women to obtain an ap- propriate education and professional positions, as well as allowing new op- portunities to open up for them. Over the years, increased activism has re- sulted in the regulation of women’s rights in various areas of life. Activities such as the fight for gender equality, marriage, motherhood, birth control, pacifism, and gaining the right to participate in political life intensified. As women began to unite, support each other and set up various char- ity organisations and trade unions, they became politically active. "e bottom line is whether in the re#ections of representatives of sociology of work or sociology of economy, referring to contextual perception and analysis of labour relations in Poland, some focus should be put on the issues concerning rede!ning the essence and content of work ethos, or rather on an analysis of a set of factors, both of endogenic and exogenous nature, which contribute to a broadly understood counter-ideology of work. "erefore, this paper presents an attempt to indicate twofold types of phenomena and processes; on the one hand, those that in#uence a process of individualization and fragmentation of work ethos in Poland; on the other one, those which a$ect content of major motivation and interpretation schemes mentioned by employees, which may become presumptions to the development of counter-ideology of work. In such circumstances, a role of work ethos in creating economic harmony, which is a special case of axionormative harmony, decreases signi!cantly and loses its explicitly social character while increasingly becoming only one of dimensions of individual identity, professional biography or a personality pro!le of an individual.

    Acta Poloniae Historica 100, 2009 PL ISSN 0001-6892 Magdalena Micińska THE POLISH INTELLIGENTSIA IN THE YEARS 1864-1918 The middle 1860s were an important turning-point in the history of the Polish nation, especially that of its educated elites. The tragic defeat of the January Uprising (1863-4) was followed by a period of heavy political repressions, profound social changes, economic challenges and intellectual revaluations. This period faced the Polish intellectual elites with the greatest challenges in their history and at the same time it began the decades when this stratum enjoyed a hitherto unknown social prestige. This was a time when the intelligentsia set itself tasks to which it could not aspire ever after. The people in the area within Russian partition underwent brutal repressions that affected not only the intellectual elite, but society as a whole. The human losses suffered in insurgent battles and summary executions were augmented by ensuing deportations to Siberia, the Caucasus and into the Russian Empire, which embraced about 40,000 insurgents and members of their families, eliminating them for many years, sometimes for ever, from the country’s life. Arrests and deportations were accompanied by confiscations of property. It is very hard to es­ tablish the percentage of the intelligentsia among the deportees (the Russian sources did not distinguish this social category), but certainly they included the most active individuals, those most conscious of and dedicated to the idea of a prompt reconstruction of independent Poland. Soon after the downfall of the January Uprising the Russians started a process of the liquidation of the separate character of Congress Poland.

Karpińska belonged to the first generation of the “Polish Freudians”, a group which also involved Ludwik Jekels, Stefan Borowiecki, Herman Nunberg, Jan Nelken and Karol de Beaurain. Karpińska’s difficult path to gain higher education will be presented. The paper lays an emphasis on Karpińska’s contribution to the development of the international psychoa- nalysis and offers an overview of her most significant psychoanalytic publications (Polish and foreign ones) up to the outbreak of World War I. It demonstrates her participation in scientific conferences and collaboration with the most important psychoanalytical centres in Zurich and Vienna together with their representatives (Jung, Freud, Jekels) drawing simultaneous attention to the broader historical background of the presented events. Karpińska’s post-war work was inextricably linked to the research on intelligence quotient of children and youth and psychotechnical studies. Furthermore, the paper illustrates the activities of the Municipal Psychological Lab in Lodz, where Karpińska was a Head between 1920 and 1930, as well as her scientific achievements in intelligence quotient research, most significant publications of 1921-1930, her collaboration with foreign centres of a similar profile and the efforts she made to establish the Vocational Guidance Service.
