I. The commencement exercises of the present academ- ic year will be brought forward a week, from June 7-8 to May 31-June I, 1942, first, to enable the great number of Rice students who are self-support- ing in part or in whole to obtain the benefit of three full months of summer employment necessary for their remaining in college, and second, to enable students to obtain full credit in summer school ac- cording to the arrangement outlined in paragraphs V and VI below. -

England 19th/20th c. 478. H.C. Beeching, Liber Amicorum 1889-1939 A friendship book compiled by Henry Charles Beeching (1859-1919, Dean of Norwich & author, matriculated Balliol 1878) chiefly between 1889 and 1899 and largely consisting of entries by his Oxford contemporaries from his time at Balliol and the circle he had built up as vicar at Yattendon, Berkshire, but with two dating to 1939 (presumably in remembrance). The entries are chiefly in verse, often original and some possibly unpublished, although there is some musical notation as well. Those contributors positively identified include: Robert Bridges (1844-1930, poet, Beeching’s wife’s uncle); Lucius Smith (1860-1934, inaugural Bishop of Knaresborough, Balliol 1879); John William MacKail (1859-1945, classical scholar, educationalist, poet, co-author of Love’s Looking Glass 1891 with Beeching and Bowyer Nichols, Balliol 1878); Harry Ellis Wooldridge (1845-1917, musician & artist); John Bowyer Buchanan Nichols (‘Bowyer Nichols’, 1859-1939, poet, Balliol 1879); Andrew Cecil Bradley (1851-1936, literary scholar, Beeching’s tutor, Balliol 1869); Annie Matheson (1858-1924, poet & biographer of Florence Nightingale); William Smith Rockstro (1823- 1895, musician & composer, who taught Mrs Beeching); Herbert Henley Henson (1863- 1947, Bishop of Durham); Edward Verrall Lucas (1868-1938, writer & publisher); and Denis MacKail (1892-1971, author, son of John William, Balliol 1910). William Morris As Printer: a Historiographical Approach
Rachel Leff and Rachel Longaker IS281 Professor Maack March 22, 2007 William Morris as Printer: A Historiographical Approach Because of the extraordinary nature of his achievements as an artist and craftsman, writer and political activist, William Morris was a compelling biographical subject for writers even before his death in 1896. Fascination with him continues to the present day. We will compare different biographies of Morris and will focus on the significance of the founding of the Kelmscott Press and his work as printer. In writing a historiographical essay that examines the way different biographers view this aspect of his work and life, one can perhaps learn about the time in which he lived, the forces that were working on Morris and how Morris was or was not a product of his time. In addition to looking at how historians have viewed Morris as a printer, we will examine the influence Morris’s work exerted on printing. Of particular interest are the ways that historians of art and print have contextualized his influence. Some historians show his influence as revolutionary while others suggest that his influence has been overstated. The chronological limits of the paper are 1888 to 1898, which spans from Morris’s attendance at a lecture on printing by Emery Walker to the closing of Kelmscott Press, two years after Morris’s death. This period will be examined in terms of how various biographers have understood and contextualized his achievements at the Press as well as how historians have understood and contextualized his influence on print. In looking at Morris as a biographical subject, we will focus on how biographers have depicted the years from 1888 to 1896 years as a critical time in his life. -
