LADB Article Id: 077180 ISSN: 1089-1560 Guatemala: Report On Recent Rebel Activities by Deborah Tyroler Category/Department: General Published: Wednesday, February 4, 1987 According to recent communiques issued by Guatemalan rebel organizations, the guerrillas caused at least five casualties to government troops in fighting during the last two weeks. The Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG), the rebel umbrella organization, reported Jan. 30 that the Rebel Armed Forces (FAR) ambushed a military patrol Jan. 22 near La Pasion River, in the northern department of Peten, causing an unknown number of casualties. Another communique issued by the Organization of the Peoples in Arms (ORPA) reported that ORPA clashed with army troops on Jan. 18 near San Rafael de Acatenango, Chimaltenango department. The number of army casualties was indeterminate. The ORPA communique said on Jan. 19 another rebel unit "harassed" government troops in El Tumbador, San Marcos department. Finally ORPA guerrillas ambushed an army column in Pochuta, Chimaltenango department, on Jan. 25, causing five casualties.
