According to recent communiques issued by Guatemalan rebel organizations, the guerrillas caused at least five casualties to government troops in fighting during the last two weeks. The Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unity (URNG), the rebel umbrella organization, reported Jan. 30 that the Rebel Armed Forces (FAR) ambushed a military patrol Jan. 22 near La Pasion River, in the northern department of Peten, causing an unknown number of casualties. Another communique issued by the Organization of the Peoples in Arms (ORPA) reported that ORPA clashed with army troops on Jan. 18 near San Rafael de Acatenango, department. The number of army casualties was indeterminate. The ORPA communique said on Jan. 19 another rebel unit "harassed" government troops in El Tumbador, . Finally ORPA guerrillas ambushed an army column in , , on Jan. 25, causing five casualties. (PRENSA LATINA, 01/30/87) [URNG was formed in February 1982 as a means to provide the four major guerrilla armies with a structure to coordinate military actions and develop a consensus over the objectives of the armed opposition. The armies are the Guerrilla Army of the Poor (EGP), the Guatemalan Labor Party-Nucleus (PGT), FAR and ORPA.]
