Doherty, 40, and Iswarienko, 37, were married on a private hillside estate in Malibu. Stavolta però la regista esordiente di questo film, Catherine Hardwicke, decide di raccontare il disagio esistenziale delle tredicenni di oggi in un modo molto onesto e crudo, creando una storia emotivamente molto forte, che proprio per questo è riuscita a scatenare un interessante dibattito (negli Stati Uniti) intorno al tema delle crisi adolescenziali. Il dato preoccupante è che l’età di queste ragazze in crisi si è notevolmente abbassata, perché la Hardwicke ci mostra come a tredici anni, almeno negli Stati Uniti, si possa già essere delle "ribelli" trasgressive e truccatissime come delle adulte, e fare una vita da far paura anche alle donne più disinvolte. Il film entra nel vivo, fin dalla prima inquadratura, di una storia emblematica sui problemi a cui vanno incontro quelli che un tempo consideravamo "bambini", ma che ora hanno un aspetto inquietante da adulti.
