» Henri Duparcs „Mélodies“ Quellenstudien und Analyse Band I zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades Doktor der Philosophie an der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz Institut 1 (Komposition, Musiktheorie, Musikgeschichte und Dirigieren) vorgelegt von Mag. Alice Heregger Betreuer: O. Univ. Prof. Dr. Peter Revers Graz, April 2010 Abstract Henri Duparc (1848–1933) is a composer whose personal life is not well known. Nevertheless his compositions consisting of 17 melodies gained increasing prominence in concert halls over the last years. Duparc, born on 21st January 1848 in Paris, has been treated unkindly by fate. He suffered from a neurological problem and eventual loss of sight, which reduced his composing work. From the age of 36, he depended upon the support of his composer friends (like Pierre de Bréville and Gustave Samazeuilh), who helped him improve and orchestrate the songs he had written at that time. His tremendous self-criticism led him to think that many of his songs were not good enough, so he burnt a lot of his manuscripts. For this reason there are only a few of his songs remaining nowadays. This thesis starts with a biographical view with emphasis on the last third of Duparc’s life (1902–1933), a period which has not been very well researched by music scientists until now. A collection of letters between Henri Duparc and singing teacher Paul Charriol, his wine merchant from Bordeaux, provides much insight into the last years of Duparc’s life. -

I am exceptionally thankful to Professor Martin Katz for accepting me into the Doctor of Musical Arts program, and has molded me to the musician I am today with his endless inspiration, utmost dedication, and unmatched artistry. I am also thankful to all the faculty members in and out of the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance who have given me various perspectives and guidance for me to grow as a professional. One's growth as a collaborative artist cannot happen without the musicians one collaborates with. Therefore, I cannot be more grateful to have had some of the most wonderful musicians, singers and instrumentalists alike, to collaborate with in music- making throughout my years here. No mountains can be climbed without a supportive force behind the climber. I am eternally appreciative of the supportive force behind me in this journey: my parents, family members, friends, past teachers, colleagues, and students. -
