Mar 3-17 - Canoeing/Kayaking Murray River: An almost 500 km Canoe TripWhen, March 3 to 17 +- (The Goldilocks Season, not too hot, not too cold, it will be just right)I had intended to do this trip with an old friend who is now unable to join me. So I hope to find someone to share my Canadian canoe for all or part of the journey. It might be that a two or more people with transport might share the journey taking turns in the canoe and sharing camp sites when possible. Other members who might enjoy a gentle paddle are most welcome to join me / us. I have completed this paddle four times, twice on my own, once with a companion and once with other CMW members. All previous trips have taken around 13 days averaging 40 km per day however on this trip, which might be my last, I expect to take a little longer maybe averaging as little as 30 km per day (maybe taking more than 14 days). For most of the journey the river does much of the work. Most days the paddling will end in the early afternoon leaving plenty of time for a latish leisurely lunch and a swim. The Murray from Albury to Echuca / Moama is gentle, I.e. no rapids, relatively safe, I.e. hazards such as fallen trees are usually removed if they are a nuisance but caution is always necessary. The main nuisance on the river can come from powered boats especially those that cause a large wake. Camp sites vary from wonderful to not so wonderful; mostly they are really nice. Food and fresh water can be replenished from riverside towns every few days. For those travelling in kayaks or smaller sit-on boats the larger Canadian canoe can carry extra water for them. It is possible to join for a shorter trip or leave early if time is a problem. Convenient towns along the way are Howlong, Corowa, Bundalong, Yarrawonga, Cobran, Tocumwal. Picnic Point Caravan Park, Barmah ending at Echuca Moama. Please call me if you would like more information. Probably stoves only, wet feet, carry water. DISTANCE: LONG. TRIP GRADE: EASY/MEDIUM MAPS: Annotated digital maps will be provided. LEADER: BOB RYAN 0245722245 (H) 0405322153 (M) [email protected]. TRANSPORT: $164 +

** End of Program ** CMW Search & Rescue Procedure and Contacts

If you are a relative or friend of someone on a walk, and that person has not returned when expected, the first thing to remember is DON'T PANIC. Coast and Mountain Walkers, along with Bushwalking NSW, have well-organised procedures in place to deal with such a situation.

1.) Party overdue. Overdue parties are usually fine, but have hit some situation that has caused a delay (swollen creek, bogged vehicle etc). Wait about 15 hours after the expected return time before calling one of the CMW Search and Rescue Contacts below. If you have been left a copy of the Leader's Form (Trip Intentions Form), have that handy when you call. The club's Search and Rescue contacts have access to this form also, as well as lots of other needed information, if a search turns out to be necessary.

Jeff Howard 9807 3649 (H) 0419 785 675 (M)

Duncan Cross9743 5128 (H) 0414 813 958 (M)

Alan Dixon 9799 6139 (H) 0409 902 168 (M)

Dani Gentle 9608 3229 (H) 0427 123 203 (M)

If you cannot contact any of these people, then contact the Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue Squad, on: 0427 455 897. There will be a delayed response of about 10 seconds - do not hang up.

Note: Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue will contact the Police. Bushwalkers Wilderness Rescue are the rescue section attached to Bushwalking NSW Inc., the umbrella group for bushwalking clubs in NSW.

2.) Locator Beacon activated. If you have been rung by AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) because your friend's/relative's Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) has been activated, the situation is more urgent. Acknowledge that the party is in the area where the beacon has gone off, and give any other information that you have. If you have a copy of the Trip Intentions Form (Leaders Form), there is useful information on that. If needed, state that you will try to obtain more information about the party. Get a contact number for the person ringing from AMSA, then ring one of the contacts above so they can start obtaining all the information that authorities want, if you do not have it.
