Canine Schedule Canine Schedule 2021 Competitions Welcome from the President Our competitions have been showcasing the very best of Queensland since the first Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) in 1876. Competitions are the heart of the Show, rewarding and recognising our exhibitors, and highlighting the vital role agriculture plays in our everyday lives. As you know, due to the impacts of COVID-19, we made the decision last year to cancel the 2020 Ekka. Remarkably, we were able to run eight of our competition sections in a modified format during the worldwide pandemic. More than 3,300 competition entries were received, which was pleasing to see during such an uncertain and challenging year. Our Young Judges, Digital Photography and Bush Poetry competitions were moved online, introducing a new audience to our much-loved Ekka traditions. The Digital Photography Competition was hugely successful, attracting 1,850 entries - up an incredible 2,000 per cent on 2019. We are planning for the gates to open this August and are delighted all 42 of our competition sections will return for Ekka 2021. Our virtual competitions will also stay, as we continue to embrace the digital age to expand the growth and reach of our traditions. In 2021, the Show will open on a Saturday (August 7), running for nine days instead of 10, maintaining two full weekends and the Ekka public holiday. We remain committed to showcasing our wonderful agricultural traditions and look forward to bringing our exhibitors back together again to celebrate what makes Queensland great. The broadcast media is just now recognizing what “dog people” already know: there are lots of fun activities around for dogs and their owners to enjoy together. And, with a little research, you and your canine companion can explore new activities throughout the Puget Sound. (Note: This listing is not intended to be complete. It just touches on some of the more common organized dog sports and activities. If you’re interested in something not referenced here (such as lure coursing, weight pulling, etc.) contact the author and she’ll attempt to help you find what you’re looking for!) • Conformation dog shows. Dozens of American Kennel Club (AKC) dog shows are held in this area every year, attracting thousands of dogs and their owners as they compete for breed championship points. Considered by some to be the “beauty contest” of the dog world, these events help recognize purebred dogs with the necessary physical and mental traits worthy of the title “Champion.” • Agility trials. Chances are you’ve seen this fun sport on TV. Dogs climbing, jumping, zipping and zooming over, under and through various obstacles. Agility is fun for all shapes and sizes of purebred as well as mixed- breed dogs, and there are competitions nearly every weekend within an hour or so drive from Seattle.

Thank you for your interest in our training center. We have been helping families train their dogs for over 30 years. During that time we’ve helped train thousands and thousands of dogs and their families. We hope you choose Family Dog for all your dog training needs! (Please note that there is only one Family Dog Training Center. Our business was started in 1979 by Kathy Lang. Although other “trainers” may use similar business names, only classes shown on this document and accompanying schedules are true Family Dog Training Center classes). Overview of Our Programs We offer a wide variety of classes for all sizes, ages and breeds of dogs (regardless of pedigree!), as well as private lessons, seminars and workshops in our 9,300 square-foot facility in Kent. Group classes are limited in size to ensure individual attention. Our average class size is 7 dogs. Family members, including well-behaved children, are encouraged to attend class and participate with the dog. Instructors are available by phone and email to answer their students’ questions and help with problems. Because many of our clients have multiple dogs, or take multiple classes with one dog, we offer a discount for additional dogs and/or classes on our 6-week sessions. Chris Zink, DVM, PhD, DACVP, DACVSMR, CCRT, CVSMT, CVA, and Brittany Jean Carr, DVM, CCRT Summary Canine sports medicine and rehabilitation is one of the newest specialties in veterinary medicine. It encompasses and integrates a variety of fields, including orthopedics, exer- cise physiology, neurology, cardiology, pulmonology, nutrition, and others. Rehabilitation, which includes regaining and maintaining fitness as well as conditioning targeted toward prevention of future injury, is a critical partner to canine sports medicine. Canine athletes include dogs that compete in performance events as varied as agility trials, obedience trials, and disc dog competitions, as well as working dogs such as police/military dogs, search and rescue dogs, and assistance dogs for the disabled. Principles of canine sports medicine and rehabilitation apply to all active dogs, regardless of whether they train or compete; this comprises a large proportion of the canine population. Canine sports medicine and rehabilitation professionals play a pivotal role in helping canine athletes and working dogs recover after injury or illness. They work to prevent re‐injury while moving the patient back to a state of muscular ability, endurance, coordination, balance, and flexibility that optimizes their physical abilities. Understanding the physical activities that are involved in different performance events and the jobs that working dogs perform is critical to devising targeted rehabilitation for sports/working dogs after injury or illness, and for retraining them to perform their specific duties.
