Portland Information Guide [ 7 THE STATE OF OREGON The Willamette Valley is very fertile and, coupled with Oregon’s famous rain, gives the state a wealth of agricultural products, Pacific Ocean Spokane including cattle, dairy products, potatoes, peppermint, and apples WA and other fruits. Oregon is also one of four major world hazelnut growing regions, and produces 95% of the domestic hazelnuts in Portland the United States. While the history of the wine production in Oregon can be traced to before Prohibition, it became a significant Salem industry beginning in the 1970s and Oregon is home to ten wine appellations. Due to regional similarities of climate and soil, the grapes planted in Oregon are often the same varieties found in the Eugene OR French region of Alsace. High technology industries and services have been a major employer since the 1970s. Tektronix was the largest private employer in Oregon until the late 1980s. Intel’s creation and Boise expansion of several plants in eastern Washington County continued the growth that Tektronix had started. The spinoffs and startups that were produced by these two companies led to the establishment of the Portland metropolitan area as the Silicon Forest CA Oregon had one of the largest salmon-fishing industries in the world, although ocean fisheries have reduced the river fisheries in recent years. Tourism is also strong in the state; Oregon’s evergreen regon is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the mountain forests, waterfalls, pristine lakes (including Crater Lake United States. Oregon borders the Pacific Ocean on the National Park), and scenic beaches draw visitors year round. The Owest, Washington on the north, Idaho on the east, and Oregon Shakespeare Festival, held in Ashland, is a tourist draw near California, and Nevada on the south. Much of its northern border its Californian border which complements the area’s scenic beauty lies along the Columbia River and much of the eastern border lies and opportunity for outdoor activities. along the Snake River. Two north-south mountain ranges—the Pacific Coast Range and the Cascade Mountain Range—form the two boundaries of the Willamette Valley, one of the most fertile and agriculturally productive regions in the world. Fast Facts Oregon has one of the most diverse landscapes of any state in POPULATION: 3,641,056 the US. It is well known for its tall, dense forests and its accessible, CAPITAL: Salem scenic Pacific coastline. Other areas include the semiarid TIME ZONE: Pacific Standard Time scrublands, prairies, and deserts that cover approximately half the state in eastern and north-central Oregon. It is one of the few places LARGEST CITIES: Portland, Salem, Eugene in the Northern Hemisphere where lift-serviced alpine skiing is NICKNAME: Centennial State available year round. PER- CAPITA INCOME: $34,561 Oregon has been a pioneer in the use of vote-by-mail. In 2000 Oregon became the first state in the nation to conduct a presidential election entirely by mail. About 80% of registered voters participated. 8 ] Portland Information Guide ABOUT PORTLAND OVERVIEW ortland is the largest city in the U.S. state of Oregon, and county seat of Multnomah County. It is an eclectic metropolis, where sophisticated and alternative styles coexist Ppeacefully. Visitors find a medium-sized city known for its friendliness, rich cultural scene and variety of outdoor pursuits. A temperate climate, thriving economy and close proximity to both the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains are among the many reasons Portland has garnered high rankings on “most livable city” lists. The Quadrants of Portland The “great renumbering” on September 2, 1931 divided Portland into five sections: Southwest, Southeast, Northwest, North and Northeast. Burnside Street divides the north and south sections, and the Willamette River divides the eastern and western sections. The river curves west five blocks North of Burnside and in place of it, Williams Avenue is used as a divider.

9/13/2019 Where to Eat, Drink, Stay and Play in Portland, Oregon - Maxim HOME FOOD & DRINK WHERE TO EAT, DRINK, STAY AND PLAY IN PORTLAND, OREGON From recreational weed to fine food and craft cocktails, Portland has got you covered. ZEYNEP YENISEY · AUG 22, 2019 Is Portland, Oregon, the quirkiest big city in America? Quite possibly, yes. This famed hipster mecca is home to a 31-foot tall Paul Bunyan statue, recreational marijuana, and a kilt-wearing Darth Vader on a unicycle who plays flame-shooting bagpipes (yes, seriously), among other oddities. As a city that introduces itself with the unofficial motto “Keep Portland Weird,” you already know you're in for a good time no matter where you go, though we have a few personal recommendations. With that said, here’s exactly where to eat, stay, and get super weird in the City of Roses. EAT: VOODOO DOUGHNUT No trip to Portland is complete without paying a little visit to the deliciously eccentric Voodoo Doughnut, where the doughy creations range from the Bacon Maple Bar, Maple Blazer Blunt (it's actually shaped like a blunt), the Old Dirty Bastard, and the Cock-N-Balls. ARDEN Small yet sophisticated, Arden is one of downtown Portland’s most intimate and impressive spots if you’re looking for a fantastic dinner with perfect wine pairings that are curated by owner and super-sommelier Kelsey Glasser. The menu is small but perfectly executed with elevated dishes like wild king salmon and adobo lamb loin with almond salsa. If you're unsure of what to order, get the Chef's Prix Fixe with four delicious courses -- but don't forget the coursed wine pairing.

As the Commission recognized in the Notice, the best way to help the largest number of AM stations to quickly and efficiently improve their service is to open such an AM-only window. Any other approach will make it extremely difficult, if not impossible, for AM stations, to obtain the translators they urgently need to remain competitive and provide our communities with the service they deserve.
